indescions_2017··on Much Assembly Required: Assembly Programming Game
Thanks for building this! Am getting a "Cannot connect to server muchassemblyrequired.com:443" error. When I try to enter the live demo. Is it just an overloaded server?

Have definitely noticed an explosion of Learn Assembly / Low Level Hacking genre video games coming out. And can definitely see how this will soon become a part of "Computation Structures" courses. Even at the secondary school level. Keep it up!

If you are craving a more penetrating discourse on how technology is affecting the modern mating game. I'd give a listen to this enlightening interview noted couples therapist Esther Perel gave on a recent episode of Fresh Air with Terry Gross. She makes the point that due to social media, etc. there is now what amounts to a paper trail for our assignations. And a mere "like" is enough to constitute a form of cheating ;)

As Marriage Standards Change, A Therapist Recommends 'Rethinking Infidelity'

https://www.npr.org/2017/12/13/570131890/as-marriage-standar...

While it may be impossible to empirically quantify if humans are enjoying less intimacy than a generation ago. I do see a danger that the erotic sphere is becoming abstracted away from its powerful roots by modern alienation. To get that mojo back, is to return to more ritualistic practices. Perhaps inspired by ancient rites of fertility common to all cultures. Akin to the way farm-to-table and slow food movements can cure one of the malaise that arises from prolonged daily exposure to Seamless dinners without any connection to Nature.

But then again, my cure for almost any modern ailment tends to be to look to the ancients!

Congrats on launching, Zach! Wondering if massively mutltiplayer CLI games are the Next Big Thing for procrastinating programmers? Instead of something that requires 30 fps rendition, however, it may be prudent to start with an HQ Trivia style multiple choice live game show ;)

indescions_2017··on Ask HN: Good resources on learning how WebRTC works under the hood?
High Performance Browser Networking by Ilya Grigorik is a canonical resource. Lots of deep historical and technical background on WebRTC. As well as WebSockets, HTTP/2, TLS, UDP, TCP, and much more.

https://hpbn.co/

Then for a practical example, try this Codelab on Real time communication with WebRTC:

https://codelabs.developers.google.com/codelabs/webrtc-web/#...

Once you are ready to build your own prototype. You can check out existing implementations from PeerJS, SimpleWebRTC, SIP.js, and Twilio.

Although it is relatively easy to invent your own. Dedicated third party cloud providers such as Twilio are quite mature. Best of luck!

indescions_2017··on Ask HN: Google Cloud Functions – Do you use it in production? What do you think?
I think the main differentiator is Firebase integration. Especially registering with Analytics events such as Auth. But yeah obvs you trade convenience for vendor lockin ;)

Looks like good design choices to me. Separating the power and compute from goggles reduces weight on the headset. Its ideally suited to be integrated into a special ops soldier's helmet for use on the battlefield. Or a surgical visor for a telemedicine operating theatre.

It's very much Day One for this. HoloLens has been a stealth hit for Microsoft this year. Its the kit ($3K) I'm most excited to try out. Its quite possible all design prototyping and additive manufacturing software interfaces will have a head-mounted 3D input component soon.

And that's just the enterprise market. For retail consumers, check out Fragments to see the possibilities of turning turning home or public spaces into immersive gaming environments:

indescions_2017··on Ask HN: What do you look for in resumes when recruiting?
Honestly, github and video screen are way more informative. Usually through cyclops.io so we can jump into whiteboarding or screen sharing.

If there was a way to have a single hosting platform. Where candidates could create 90 second video intros of themselves. Describing their projects, interests and personal and professional philosophies. With links to demos, apps, etc. A lot like YCombinator startup candidate videos. I think that could be tremendously useful! Best of luck ;)

Thanks! I'd be curious also to hear what sort of applications you plan on building with WebRTC. My own interest lies in HTML5 web gaming and peer networks.

indescions_2017··on Literary fiction in crisis as sales drop dramatically
"A book must be the axe for the frozen sea inside us." -Kafka

John Le Carre, Salman Rushdie, John Banville, Anthony Horowitz. All had superlative novels out this year.

Also just started Francis Spufford's Golden Hill. Absolutely sublime way to spend a snow bound winter night.

The crisis is obviously in readership. Not writing. And the chaotic divergence of attention.

It may be true that the text no longer acts as Bildungsroman. The primary method to impart moral and spiritual character to young influence-able minds.

But then the Mountain must come to Muhammad. And the great works rendered as digital classics.

Html5 "io" games follow similar viral trajectories. But also have some staying power. Once they develop mechanics or features that encourage replay-ablity. Particularly at web scale multiplayer with leaderboards ;)

I think what you may begin to realize is that its their alternative data that represents the motherload. And its not your algorithms but level of service that will differentiate you. indescions_2017··on Stanford CS007: Personal Finance For Engineers
So you've completed CS007. And graduated Stanford. You've even managed to save around $10K in cash from various summer jobs and gifts from relatives. The consensus advice investment management professionals would offer is to sock it away in a well-diversified set of Vanguard Funds. Which you keep adding to on a monthly basis allocated from your paycheck. As well as re-investing any dividends generated. Which will compound nicely over the next thirty years. Leaving you with a $1M nest egg that will provide stable yearly income during your golden years. As well as a decent inheritance left over for the next generation.

But I have a really hard time giving this advice to a 22 year old. I certainly didn't heed it myself. Instead I used the cash and spent 100% of it on my own professional and personal development. So, naturally, since this is Stanford and Silicon Valley. I'd include a section on Risk. Taking it. Managing it. What are the rewards. As well as the costs. But with the emphasis the post-graduation 5-10 year window may represent a unique opportunity in your life to take it. And that there are programs such as StartX and YC available to assist should you decide to go all in.

Image Processing and Analysis.

Goroutines, as well as the image package, are well suited to parallel operations on bitmap data right out of the bag. From simple texture synthesis routines such as sine-wave plasma generation or mandelbrot set fractals. To advanced state-of-the-art techniques like super-resolution image enhancement and frequency domain analysis. Golang is great for image science. Especially parallel operations on separable kernels.

And it makes for a fun exercise as well ;)

indescions_2017··on The Mating Crisis Among Educated Women
Not the usual sort of discussion I expect to see on Edge but welcome nonetheless. Fertility services, reproductive tech is very hot right now. With women who heed the countdown of their biological clocks electing to freeze their eggs at $50K, it could also be considered a growth sector. So why not provide the spectrum of services a single professional would need to raise a family. From quality genetically screened gamete seed banks. Making it as easy to order 23 chromosomes as you would pick out a new laptop on Newegg. To generous paid maternity care and leave. Nanny, lactation consulting, on-call pediatrics, daycare. As well as transportation, grocery delivery, nursery installation and much more.

Of course all of this is readily available via bespoke services for those that can afford it. So how to we extend all the necessary services to a middle class single professional woman?

If it truly is a crisis that birth rates are falling in the developed world. And restricted immigration results in further population skew. Then taxpayers must begin the debate on subsidizing reproductive and childcare services. Because traditional "nudge" messaging and policy seems to neglect where organic demand lies: having children and career, without the necessity or social norm of marriage.
