immy··on Coronavirus will end the golden age for college towns
Champaign-Urbana IL, pictured in the article but not named, is characteristic of a campus that I think will be impacted. 32,000 undergrads, 14,000 graduate students, tons of research departments, and increasing (til now) corporate satellites.
immy··on Brain implant restores man's sense of touch and arm movement
You'd enjoy Homo Deus by Yuval Noah Harari
immy··on Amazon scooped up data from its own sellers to launch competing products
Whatever their plan is, this type of behavior is good for Shopify carving out their growing niche serving up strongly branded products.
immy··on A theory of Zoom fatigue
Seems obvious and succinct to me: on Zoom, you feel compelled to look at the screen all the time. In-person, you can respectfully look anywhere in the room because the other person shares the physical space and can intuit where your attention is.
immy··on YC S20 Remote Batch
As someone who doesn't yet own property here, I'm okay with that.
immy··on I built a amp+cab+effects simulator for guitar on a Raspberry Pi 4B
"please visit our kickstarter campaign launching Tuesday April 21st, 2020"
immy··on Waymo raises first external investment round
Your decade of experience doesn't support your projection. 10 years ago, AI didn't show a clear path toward meaningful products either. IMO product innovation isn't on a curve, it's a staircase.
immy··on Early riser or night owl? New study may help to explain the difference
Check out the somatic work of Thomas Hanna. 30 minutes of supine coordinated movement is great for the parasympathetic.

EDIT: the one I use is paid on Glo.com. Found a free one that seems similar https://youtu.be/F0jwdoSWsio

immy··on Apple lawsuit tests if an employee can plan rival startup while on payroll
When I worked at Apple there was mandatory training on non-compete, which included a lesson example that it would be in violation to create an iPhone app for gardening. Nuvia's genesis seems egregious in comparison. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.
immy··on Ask HN: Solo devs, how do you plan your development?
What’s the secret to get past the Typeform and actually try this? Or should I seek out an invite link from a peer
immy··on Scott's Cheap Flights: Growing a small side project into a booming business
I bit on that one. The Skimm email was so useless I was offended. It hurt my view of Scott's cheap flights.
immy··on Show HN: Monica, an open-source CRM to manage friends and family
It's not creepy to me. I was using Bond (http://www.getbond.co) but its interaction wasn't designed very well.
immy··on Show HN: Tomato – Pomodoro Timer
Visual version, avoids disturbing coworkers

  brew install screenbrightness
while true; do sleep 1800; brightness 0; sleep 0.1; brightness 1; done
immy··on Get Your Shit Together
For the videos, you two might want to record some of your stories and values. If you have iPhones, I've built an app that guides you through it -- http://www.oakvideos.com
immy··on Yelp Buys Eat24 for $134M
I was only last week discussing how I felt Eat24's brand has been breaking away from the staid competition over the past year. This move puts Yelp ($YELP) on my investing radar; their business is clearly more than milking businesses on the reviews side.
immy··on Oculus Rift Development Kit 1
Check out the committer, nrpatel (eclecti.cc). Awesome projects.

It's been a while since being impressed by CompE folks like this in college (I'm a software guy).

immy··on What is “immediate connection” good for?
Swift playgrounds.
immy··on What happened to Motorola
I interned in PCS 2002-2004. Android wasn't out yet (but Danger Sidekick was) and Moto was already working on a Linux+Java OS. That project was the division's great hope, but missed deadlines on and on.

Cramming a Java OS onto 2004 mobile hardware, very risky choice of a savior.

Half the interns used Treo, Sidekick, LG. Half had a Razr.

immy··on YC Hacks Recap
Agreed, such a breath of fresh air from the feeling you get on the internets. It felt like my school's ACM office during finals week!
immy··on Instagram as a Growing Business
I am surprised Instagram beat Tumblr to it
immy··on Instagram as a Growing Business
It doesn't necessarily have to suck like Facebook feed. I never despised placement advertising in TV shows.
immy··on Startup advice
yo Eric, check out some of Nir Eyal's talks http://vimeo.com/63534588
immy··on Startup advice
Tons of good ones mixed in with the platitudes. Here are some favorite quips from other people that I've saved:

"Sell before you build" - Paul Nuchheit

“Be a cockroach, impossible to kill”

“Do stuff that doesn’t scale”

“Launch early”

Ask "five why's" to get to the root of what customers want. Usually, it will reveal "they want simplicity."

"don't sacrifice the WHY in the process of speeding up the WHAT and HOW" - Hunter Walk

"To achieve great things, two things are needed - a plan and not quite enough time" - Leonard Bernstein

"The only people who see the whole picture are the ones who step out of the frame." - Salman Rushdie

immy··on Build it with me: Bitcoin wallet for Mac
yup, sure do - for one use case. reviewing diffs and choosing what files/lines to commit. GitX.
immy··on You are not Steve Jobs
Very ego-less of Steve to have put so much trust in the chain of command.
immy··on Show HN: I built a thing
Draw a stick figure comic for your pizza||ups delivery story! Much other consumer packaging to do, but that solves your messaging question
immy··on Get all the photos your friends took with you, forward and backwards in time.
Both have the same value proposition. Flock has far clearer messaging.
immy··on Show HN: Hipmob is Olark for mobile apps. (Live support chat, now on Android)
no not a particularly novel idea, but someone's gotta do it. $$$
immy··on If you were involved in the OpenGL ES specification, you are an idiot
jwz, how about porting the ~Aaron extension to Mac OS X now. Too bad SGI isn't around to hold a funeral like Apple did for OS 9 :)
