imartin2k··on Getting Old
Laptop getting old?
imartin2k··on The era of cloud colonialism has begun
Embarrassing to write “Columbia” instead of Colombia as a journalist, even more when invoking “colonialism”.
imartin2k··on Salesforce, but for Dating
Good. But single now by choice (and not dating). So no need for this CRM.
imartin2k··on Salesforce, but for Dating
I’ve done that spreadsheet thing for a year or so, around 15 years ago when I just had started using online dating sites (which where different back then, and non-algorithmic)
imartin2k··on Tell HN: Airbnb has no system in place when a host cancels on a renter
True, I only had good experiences with Airbnb, but last time I used it was summer 2019. With the post-pandemic travel and remote work boom, as well as the tech market downturn, the risk for bad experiences likely has increased a lot.

imartin2k··on Ask HN: What is the best advice you received in 2022?
I saw this in a tweet or LinkedIn post (don’t remember anymore exactly) and it stuck with me ever since: “The best way to career success is to be easy to work with”.
imartin2k··on Be wary of imitating high-status people who can afford to countersignal
Paul Graham’s website design is a typical example of countersignaling.
imartin2k··on Gaslighting is Word of the Year 2022
Concept creep. Should be word of the decade or something :)
imartin2k··on Amazon Alexa is on pace to lose $10B this year
Same here. I love my Alexa speaker and use it several times daily — for the same use cases as you, plus asking Alexa to start music streaming. Been doing so for many years and it’s unlikely that would change anymore.
imartin2k··on Ask HN: Why do some people not communicate clearly?
German here living in Sweden. The description sounds very much like Swedish/ Nordic behavior/mentality. And don’t many people in Minnesota actually have Scandinavian heritage?
imartin2k··on Sam Bankman-Fried Has a Savior Complex
I don’t think about him all the time but it’s wisdom! Some people just seem to intuitively be better at understanding the mechanisms of the hedonist treadmill than others. I’d claim that all the tech billionaires we know of must be rather bad at it. Otherwise they had followed Tom’s example.
imartin2k··on Mark Zuckerberg confirms broad layoffs to begin at Meta
Indeed. “Lifestyle inflation” is never a good thing.
imartin2k··on Ask HN: Do you believe there's really an alternative to Twitter?
I believe there’s no need for a real alternative. Twitter is much less important (collectively) as remaining obsessive Twitter users assume.
imartin2k··on Employee gift ideas that make people feel bad
Yep in most cases and to different degrees in different cultures and contexts, gifting seems to be a procedure that primarily is about the giver and their needs, rather than about the receiver - while claiming the opposite.
imartin2k··on Ask HN: What social media site could replace Twitter?
LinkedIn
imartin2k··on The Big Tech Hiring Slowdown Is Here and It Will Hurt
The article doesn’t really touch on this, but isn’t this fantastic news for startups and smaller companies, for which recruiting talent will become easier?!

imartin2k··on The Playlist: Fictionalized Netflix series about the early days of Spotify
Still brings up some fun memories about the old days when torrents, Pirate Bay and the fight between the music industry and those that had started to use the internet was a regular topic.

imartin2k··on Two Bombings in One Night? That’s Normal Now in Sweden
In the light of the situation, the craziest thing about contemporary Sweden (and a pet-peve of mine to lament about) is that people's addresses (and a lot more private information such as who else is living in their apartment, as well as where exactly it is located in a building) are available to anybody through dedicated search engines. The only way to be excluded is if you are already having a significant threat against you (i.e. your current life is already "destroyed" , you likely had to move elsewhere etc), or if you are working in a few delicate professions.

One would think that people in Sweden would see a connection between the several weekly cases of shootings against apartments and detonations in buildings, and the accessibility of the information mentioned above. But no. There isn't even a debate. It's something I absolutely cannot understand.

Historically, transparency and openness has been crucial elements of Swedish culture and societal structure. However, it's a luxury which the country, in the light of today's situation, simply cannot afford to have to the extend it had historically. But no one seems to actually see this. It's drives me kinda nuts.

imartin2k··on Sweden’s Far Right Is Rising
Agree. She's somehow tiptoeing around the elephant in the room.

Also, she seems to suggest that the reason for the growing inequalities are the privatizations.

Those might very well have contributed. But the root of the inequality is something also related to immigration: If a country with an historically exceptionally high economic equality such as Sweden receives a huge number of people fleeing from war in largely poor, underdeveloped countries, then you inevitably create a huge economic and social inequality which didn't exist before. Because there'll be a gap between those who grew up in the country, and those who arrived with largely nothing. And this gap will even grow at least initially, as those new arrivals take a while to learn the language, get a job and integrate etc. Even if the entire process of immigration and integration would be perfectly organized, it would take decades until the majority of those who came as refugees are able to buy a typical Swedish summer house (which many of the "natives" do own).

There is a repeating pattern in Swedish public discourse and politics where seemingly intelligent people don't make consequence analysis. They frequently don't seem to understand that a decision they make or an idea they promote, can lead to undesirable outcomes - even if those outcomes are rather likely or predictable. And when they happen, they still fail to see the connection. I don't understand why this happens so frequently.

imartin2k··on Team led by Japanese researchers reveals best way to put crying baby to sleep
Cool, interesting perspective. Love HN for being so international, despite the US origin.
imartin2k··on I wish I was a little bit taller
The kind of article were I had to check whether it was published on April 1.

Fascinating and somewhat shocking phenomenon. I was under impression that length would be the only aspect of humans that can’t be altered - turns out that was wrong.

imartin2k··on Walking is good for health but walking faster is even better, study finds
To me this is a bit sad, as walking fast is for me associated with being stressed and in a rush. Walking slowly allows me to be fully mindful, to feel my body, and to experience the world around me without being lost in thought. It took a bit training but can be very pleasant. I haven’t managed to achieve these things when walking fast.

imartin2k··on Mobility startup TIER is laying off 16 percent of staff
Yes, I prefer Tier too. Better scooter quality, often better availability of scooters with ok battery levels, in my opinion (and they have blinkers). Lately they raised prices in Stockholm though for their 300 minute/month plan, so now I go with Voi which has equally quality scooters, in my opinion.
imartin2k··on Swedish tech startups and scaleups
Thanks! Fortunately, I have been using the same structure in all my 171 previous weekly newsletter issues. So while it was a huge amount of copy & paste, the mental work was fortunately limited. Still I do feel exhausted now.
