imartin2k··on AI cancer cures slowed by chip shortage, says Arm boss
Sometimes I wonder if not AI infrastructure itself is the paperclip.
imartin2k··on Why are US consumers so angry? It's not just high prices
I am only commenting from afar (haven’t been in the US since around 10 yrs ago, but consuming a lot of US centric information), but could it be that the US economy has simply become too extractional? In my eyes, healthy capitalism needs a balance between profit-seeking and customer-satisfying. And at least from what I read and hear, the balance is now gone, with consumers being nickled and dimed while the quality of products and services going down. I am thinking of all the hotel junk fees for example, or how airlines keep segmenting customers so everybody gets exactly the lowest level of experience they can cope with, while paying as much as possible.
imartin2k··on Om Malik has died
Sad! He (and Michael Arrington) were the first two tech bloggers I read religiously back in the web 2.0 days. Had Malik’s personal blog in my RSS feeds until now. It has been only a week or so since I read his last post.
imartin2k··on Digital euro clears key hurdle as EU seeks to break free from U.S. credit cards
I only use CC, to earn airline points (based in Sweden). But I always pay the entire amount due at the end of the interest-free period, so I never pay interest.

I also like the fact that using a CC comes with better buyer protection than debit cards.

imartin2k··on Viktor Orbán concedes defeat after 'painful' election result
I suspected he would lose when he was recently visited and supported by Vance. Nobody likes Vance (in Europe, and probably anywhere). Getting prominent backing by an unlikable character isn’t a winning strategy.
imartin2k··on The underrated benefits of always having oatmeal at lunch
Eating it daily for breakfast since around 2013.
imartin2k··on List of domains censored by German ISPs
I see canna.to on the list. Amazing, that site already existed when I downloaded MP3s in my early internet days, in 2000. And still looks pretty much the same.
imartin2k··on Ask HN: Do you have an aversion to recent TLDs?
I publish lots of newsletters containing links to startups, and these TLDs do tend to lead to occasional deliverability issues, with a higher risk of spam classification. So the anti-spam lists and algorithms share your perception of such TLDs being potentially dodgy.

Objectively they aren’t though.

imartin2k··on Swedish AI 'vibe-coding' startup Lovable valued at almost $2B
Lots of promising AI startups from Sweden now are gearing up for global conquest (mostly AI apps though, there are fewer foundation & AI infra startups). The success of Lovable fuels this, plus the founder Anton Osika is friends with many of the other founders, so there’s a lot of mutual supporting going on.

imartin2k··on Facebook is asking to use Meta AI on photos you haven’t yet shared
The world would be a better place without this shitty company.
imartin2k··on The Gmail app will now create AI summaries
Personally I truly, deeply hate AI summaries and so I strongly disapprove of Google’s latest moves into this territory. I know it’s not a comment with substance, but I think the more people express their aversion to this trend, the higher the chances of it not becoming the norm.
imartin2k··on Mozilla to shut down Pocket and Fakespot
Glad back in the days I chose Instapaper and not Readitlater/Pocket. Still using it all the time. It costs money but is worth it.
imartin2k··on Netflix will show generative AI ads midway through streams in 2026
I’ve never had a reason to visit Yandex but this sounds like one. Thanks for the tip.
imartin2k··on Are Americans Still Welcome in Europe?
And the 20% tipping, please leave that at home too.
imartin2k··on Wall Street Blew It
The markets, while often right after a while, can be a bit slow. I remember the weeks in February/March 2020. The writing about the upcoming global pandemic was on the wall, yet I had enough time to calmly sell all my stocks during the week before everything came crashing down.

Same slowness with the reaction to Deepseek recently.

imartin2k··on Yahoo is selling TechCrunch to private equity firm Regent
I still appreciate TC’s coverage and style quite a lot. The level of overall enshittification in regards to quality and UX is rather moderate. For a 20 year old news outlet with various owners throughout the years, in an industry with rapid, constant changes, that’s an achievement.
imartin2k··on Sweden's Lovable, rakes in $15M after growth
Sweden’s tech startup scene is definitely seeing lots of momentum at the early stage. Basically everyone building focused on the “LLM wrappers” from the start, due to lack of critical “ingredients” for creating foundation AI companies. This initially looked like a major weakness. But now, as the market realizes that this is where value creation happens after all, seems like a fortunate outcome.

Allow me to add an obligatory note to subscribe to https://swedishtechweekly.com if you want to stay updated about Swedish startups such as Lovable :) (been publishing this weekly for 6 years).

imartin2k··on The Trouble with Elon
And his Waking Up app is amazing, and life changing (if one is open to practicing seeing consciousness as it is).
imartin2k··on US fertility rate dropped to lowest in a century as births dipped in 2023
My hypothesis is that human progress (social, technological, moral, economic) is by definition at odds with having children. The more advanced we get as species, the less attractive it becomes (for most) to have children (many, or at all). And there’s nothing strange about it. You could even say: The individual’s need to have children - many or at all - was a bug in the human operative system, born out of circumstances that are being eradicated with human advancement. And I’m meaning this completely dispassionately, not in any way labeling this as good or bad.

One could call it paradox of human progress. We are advancing to the point at which we eliminate the process that so far has sustained us as a species. The only ways out I see are that existing human lifespans are expanded significantly (with all the challenges this brings), or that childbirth is being entirely/partially offloaded from women to private/government-run incubating machines (sounds dystopian, I know).

imartin2k··on Using Cloudflare on your website could be blocking RSS users
I’m happy to see that a post regarding the use of RSS gets so much attention on HN. It’s a good sign. As I basically live in my feed reader since 2007 or so, one of my greatest fears is the slow demise of RSS by way of reduced support of RSS feeds by websites owners.
imartin2k··on Europeans Spend 575M Hours Clicking Cookie Banners Every Year
I’m spending maybe one minute a day clicking Cookie banners. While people in the US spend two hours more every day driving a car. So when put into perspective, it does not seem such a big deal (though Cookie banners suck for sure, and from a PR perspective they are bad for the image of mostly effective EU regulation efforts in many other areas).
imartin2k··on What's your favorite RSS feed reader?
Yes, plus it can be used as a RSS “engine” for iOS reader apps such as Reeder, which is my favorite way of consuming my feeds.
imartin2k··on Ask HN: Which movies did you watch multiple times?
Schindler’s List. Many times. Anchorman, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Donnie Darko
imartin2k··on Show HN: Midday – Run your business smarter (open-source)
Nicely done Pontus :)
imartin2k··on Sweden's stock market became the envy of Europe
https://archive.is/2603K
imartin2k··on I'm eating raw chicken every day for 100 days – or until I'm hospitalized
The desire for social media fame is pushing people to do increasingly dumb things.
imartin2k··on Insects aren't attracted to lights at all – they just get vertigo
Sorry for posting, I realize now it’s a dupe https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39192807
imartin2k··on DeepMind Co-Founder: AI Is Fundamentally a "Labor Replacing Tool"
Also, demographics and other changes (in many developed countries at least) mean we really need more labor replacing tools, as there’s simply a lack of human labor supply in many areas.

Of course, if the labor replacing process is too rapid, then that could become a problem.

imartin2k··on Berlin, the European city where selfies are 'awkward'
And it’s not “Europe's tech capital" either.
imartin2k··on Thailand: Man jailed for 50 years for defaming monarchy
Thailand is also one of the most visited countries in the world, and 99.9% of tourists never run into any problems. In fact, I’d argue it’s one of the safest countries in the world for tourists. Personally, I always advise people to choose Thailand if they are looking for travel to a place that ticks most boxes relevant for a vacation. Just don’t insult the monarchy or sunbath in a temple while you are there. Neither should be that hard.
