The era of cloud colonialism has begun

Typical reactionary nonsense from The Register. Obviously big tech isn’t a charity, but the article talks about 600M without even electricity and then effectively claims they’d be better off without infrastructure investment.

What a crap take. Of course they are trying to expand. Europe would do well to have a better answer than asking Lidl to run cloud datacenters, until then there's not much to go than the big 3 if you want to be where the new managed services with nice APIs that will scale for you will always appear first.

You can't "stifle local competition" for cloud services when the locals don't even have internet access. What course of action would The Register have these companies take? If they ignore these regions they're racists who don't see their potential. If they do business there they're colonizers.

Between custom hardware, proprietary SaaS and other lock-in tricks computing reverted to the level of closedness of mainframes.

Providing cloud services and thereby improving digital connectivity in poorer economies == colonialism.

When there’s a lack of investment in infrastructure, any investment is a net good. This is obvious to anyone who understands economics, but possibly not to people who want to get performatively upset about nothing.

Embarrassing to write “Columbia” instead of Colombia as a journalist, even more when invoking “colonialism”.

To me it seems over, the world is already divided into a few fiefdoms, I just fear that the politics will catch up.
