idiot900··on 3D-Knitting: The Ultimate Guide
This is an ad for a company that drop ships their product from another company that has made its business on offering production and fulfillment of canned (but customizable) 3D knit styles.
idiot900··on Porsche sold more electrified cars in Europe in 2025 than pure gas-powered cars
This was once said about Japanese cars. I don’t want a Chinese car now, but I probably will not too long from now.
idiot900··on Ford F-150 Lightning outsold the Cybertruck and was then canceled for poor sales
They can be luxury vehicles with reasonable running costs - regular gas and less depreciation than the usual luxury brands. They also have utility in case you need it. Pickup trucks aren't my cup of tea but it can be very rational to buy one even if you don't need it as a work truck.
idiot900··on People are bad at reporting what they eat. That's a problem for dietary research
https://www.snapcalorie.com/

I cannot find a FAQ or pricing page on your website.

idiot900··on No GPS required: our app can now locate underground trains
If your heart rate at rest is truly 180, you have an arrhythmia and need to see a doctor.
idiot900··on Show HN: I made a tiny camera with super long battery life
Are there sample images from the camera on the product website? This is a neat idea but it would be nice to gauge to what extent it is fit for purpose, and a helpful way to do this is with a bunch of sample images.
idiot900··on Tohands – Smart calculator for small businesses
Simply posting your product manual online ought to be easy for you and helpful for your potential customers.
idiot900··on FCC launches inquiry to increase minimum broadband speed [pdf]
Honest question: at what point, with real life usage, is 1 Gbps actually necessary for home users?

I find that latency rather than throughput is what determines my perceived quality of an Internet connection. But am curious how others think.

idiot900··on Fossil versus Git
If Fossil is so against deleting commits, what do you do if you've accidentally committed sensitive information that cannot live in any form in the repo?
idiot900··on Da Vinci robot surgeon removes inoperable tumor, saving patient’s life
Robotic head and neck surgery is routine at major medical centers all over. Da Vinci has been around for many years and it is human controlled.

I’m glad this patient was helped but there is absolutely nothing interesting otherwise about this.

idiot900··on Doctors on TikTok
Same here in the USA, those nurses are called Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists.
idiot900··on Doctors on TikTok
I'm an anesthesiologist and I cannot imagine taking a picture of a patient, let alone posting it to social media. Even if anonymized.

There is an element of coercion when you ask the patient who is about to place their life in your hands, for consent to do this sort of thing.

idiot900··on JP Morgan fined by SEC for deleting email records
Who works in the SEC? Former bank/finance employees. Where will these employees go work if they decide to leave the SEC?
idiot900··on Ed Sheeran demonstrates how copyright is destroying musicians
In other words, marketing is necessary but not sufficient.

What percentage of non-marketed artists hit it big? If equal to the marketed artists, why spend the money marketing?

idiot900··on The Mullvad Browser
Perhaps roll your own VPN using a home router that can act as a VPN server? That way you can use your home internet connection...assuming its upload speed is fast enough.

A shame BBC can't accommodate its paying customers who happen to be abroad.

idiot900··on We reduced our iOS app launch time by 60%
The DoorDash iOS app is so horrendously slow and laggy on my iPhone 14 Pro (as it was on my 11 Pro) that I’m using other delivery services whenever I can. That means if the restaurant I want to order from is available on another platform, I’ll use that.
idiot900··on Ask HN: How many of you are open to Piracy again?
Uninterested in piracy. I’m sure there is plenty of great content not covered by my current streaming subscriptions but I am fine not to experience those at all.
idiot900··on I Lost All Faith in LastPass
On top of that, they’ve made their client software prettier and slower, but not really more usable IMHO. I migrated to BitWarden and don’t think the user experience is any worse.
idiot900··on AWS doesn't make sense for scientific computing
This rings true for me. I have a federal grant that prohibits me from using its funds for capital acquisitions: i.e. servers. But I can spend it on AWS at massive cost for minimal added utility for my use case. Even though it would be a far better use of taxpayer funds to buy the servers, I have to rent them instead.
idiot900··on Negative incentives in academic research
I'm an assistant professor in a medical school in the US and agree in general with the article. It takes an absurd amount of time to write a grant application, time that could be spent doing science - but we faculty don't have any choice if we want to continue our careers.
idiot900··on G Suite free edition no longer available starting July 1, 2022
I set up my @icloud.com email address on my iPhone. It suggests available alternatives. Once you migrate your own domain, you can just use that instead, and never have to use the @icloud.com address for anything externally visible.
idiot900··on Wine 7.0
It's an artifact of a time when RAM was extremely expensive and CPUs were slow. Dumping the in-memory binary representation to a disk was apparently the logical choice at the time.
idiot900··on Upwork asking me for a $12.5k refund as the client was using someone else’s card
It's easy enough to use one of the various online banks to establish a separate bank account for Paypal and the like.
idiot900··on Brussels Airlines makes 3,000 unnecessary flights to maintain airport slots
Although I'm unfamiliar with the details, the pilots need to continue flying to maintain their type ratings.

Perhaps Lufthansa/Brussels Airlines could have used single-engine propeller planes (think Cessna 172 or the many other aircraft in its class) to decrease the cost and environmental impact?

idiot900··on Introduction to High-Performance Scientific Computing
Said it before and will say it again: I used TACC systems a good deal in graduate school and the folks running their systems are fantastic.
idiot900··on How to Live in Airbnbs for the Price of an Apartment Lease
I did this for a few months when my house construction was delayed. Living out of a suitcase, even in relatively nice Airbnbs, was soul-sucking. No choice of mattress, a limited wardrobe, same-y IKEA decor everywhere. Not having a true "home base" was no fun. Wouldn't recommend it unless you really have the personality for it.
idiot900··on The Clickbaitification of Netflix
It was really easy for me to cancel my Netflix account. Maybe 60 seconds on their website, if even that.
idiot900··on RustPython: A Python interpreter written in Rust
Presumably nothing, but without asking others, the maximum value of N is 1.
idiot900··on Ten Years of Bootstrap
Web development is not my job. I still use Bootstrap to very quickly make a passable UI for internal projects. I'm really glad not to have to spend time learning all that stuff.
idiot900··on We replaced rental brokers with software and filled 200 vacant apartments
Since they aren't taxis, car services can charge enough there is no such thing as a low profit route for them.

In cities, there were were either no taxis around in certain neighborhoods, or they simply would not come at all even if you called and asked the taxi company and the dispatcher told you they had sent a driver. Both of these I experienced personally.
