ibn_ibid··on Ask HN: What convinced you to apply for the current job and why?
It was in a product space I liked and they offered me lots and lots of delicious money

Shelters only have so many beds, not to mention many are already overcrowded and rife with violence

ibn_ibid··on Ask HN: How much do you make as a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE)?
I've been working professionally as an engineer for almost 5 years, the past two in dedicated DevOps / SRE capacities. At my current firm, which is a large global company, I make 150k/yr + variable bonus (usually ~%20).

This is in NYC. I kind of hate the work, though. Would much prefer to go back to a pure programming role as I miss the problem solving and analytical aspect of coding. SRE is a lot of plumbing and then twiddling config files or sitting on the line with cloud support. But it is cool to bring up huge clusters at the click of a button.

ibn_ibid··on One of Estonia's first "e-residents" explains what it means
It is basically a way to make it easier for entrepreneurs to do business in the Eurozone and take advantage of Estonia's generous corporate tax structure. It's mostly a legal / financial device, you can't use it for travel or citizenship purposes.

ibn_ibid··on Launch HN: Promise (YC W18) – Cost-effective, more humane alternative to jail
Does this mean Promise is paying the cash bail for those awaiting trial? Or is there a lower rate negotiated? What are the qualifications for release (i.e. who gets chosen to get their bail paid over someone else)?

>As a pilot in command, I have final authority to deviate from these clearances for safety reasons, mainly because it is my ass on the line.

I think this is the most crucial aspect. Machines are excellent at executing patterns and adhering to constraints. Improvisation, not so much. And really, in emergency situations when things go awry and off script, it's that "clutch" factor that makes all the difference.

>You can't have it both ways, that's why freedom of speech covers EVERYBODY equally.

Actually, you can, that's why there are free speech exceptions in US law and protected classes? Hate speech and hate crimes are a real thing.

Also "ANTIFA" (it's "Antifa" lol) and BLM aren't monolithic groups - one is an ideology dedicated to fighting fascism and the other is a social justice movement consisting of many decentralized local community orgs. Neither of these are comparable to Nazis literally shouting to gas kikes in the streets and running over peaceful protesters and if you think they are, you might want to check yourself.

>They certainly don't have grounds to delete the domain based on this

It's their service. Hate speech probably violates their ToS.

ibn_ibid··on Google cancels domain registration for Daily Stormer
Not if we realize that free speech doesn't mean letting hate speech go unchecked

ibn_ibid··on Big brother is here, and his name is Facebook
Yep, the Nazis are just upset about authoritarianism on the left. They don't actually want to kill jews or black people or anything. They just want to peacefully protest the fact they can't say such things right? Maybe we should try appeasing these fascists, because that worked so well last time?
ibn_ibid··on Big brother is here, and his name is Facebook
>At the moment the left is more of a threat

Nazis are literally holding rallies in downtown Charlottesville with torches and yelling kill jews. One just ran over people counter-demonstrating in the streets. But yea it's the left who are a threat.

We have a president who refuses to condemn white nationalism. He has repeatedly issued calls to violence and wants to rough up journalists. But yes, it is the left who are endangering our free speech.

A close advisor to the president, Gorka, wore a Hungarian nationalist pin to Trump's inauguration - this group were nazi collaborators. He says that the bombing of a Minnesota mosque could've been a "false flag" and he has refused to condemn white nationalists. But yea it's the left who are a threat to our wellbeing.

ibn_ibid··on Worldbuilding
Arrakis is hardly just a monocosm. It has a living breathing ecological history that explains why its the way it is rather than it just being an arbitrary set piece (like most of the monocosms in say, Star Wars). Originally it was a lush tropical realm until the advent of the sandworms who in turn devastated the environment causing it to become the wasteland it was at the time of the first Dune book. As the series progresses, the environment of Arrakis changes as well and I believe by the end of Frank Herbert's books large swaths of it had returned to a thick, vegetative state. The changing nature of the planet Arrakis is key to understanding the themes of the Dune series.
