@dang something about this website triggering content blocking filters. hate to say that i don't have time to investigate but it seems worth mentioning
i_like_apis··on The 'S&P 493' reveals a different U.S. economy
Predictably, if you say anything sane on the internet, you get a longwinded rude nonsense reply for your effort.

The consistent message from social media in the last 10 years is: don't try to talk sense. That will be punished.

i_like_apis··on The 'S&P 493' reveals a different U.S. economy
propaganda. "the economy isn't actually good!"

they won't even show a chart in the article. 493 is up ... look at a 2025 5y chart. not that "basically flat" (actually 2023) chart google tries to feed you as a top result.

i_like_apis··on The Needless Bullshit of Having a 'Mission'
“Needless bullshit” is a bad take.

What if I have a mission and I like it and it’s totally authentic? My customers like it too. Are you calling me full of it for achieving that difficult goal?

I think you’re right about a lot of inauthentic mission statements, but I think crass swearing is the real “needless bullshit”.

Cool idea and I like the format. Transformer circuits and attention would be a cool thing too.
i_like_apis··on The Existential Risk of AGI
Speculating about existential risk is certainly important, but way too easy to overstate. It can easily become distracting and actually dangerous in itself.

Here’s a good take on it: https://www.ai-breakout.com/post/ai-alignment-and-the-messia...

I also think we would all be very wise to remember the story of Henny Penny / “Chicken Little”. https://americanliterature.com/childrens-stories/henny-penny...

Specifically, the danger brought by hysteria. In our case, Alignment is probably much more effective and achievable when the widest possible community of researchers and engineers have access to knowledge, and much more perilous if they don’t because deluded parties thought it should be contained to a much smaller elite “secure” group.

i_like_apis··on Squeeze the hell out of the system you have
Yeah I should have left the Rumsfeld part out because the conversation naturally got distracted. It isn’t accurate to attribute it to him. His was perhaps the most prominent recent version , but he was definitely paraphrasing an existing adage.
i_like_apis··on Squeeze the hell out of the system you have
Haha. Thanks for sharing that. Rumsfeld definitely has a sense of humor.

He’s also one of the best candidates for that type of conspiracy theory. His career history is flabbergasting.

Check out https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Donald_Rumsfeld#Corporate_conn...

In addition to all the Bohemian Club, RAND corp, defense and government posts, in the 70s the guy was a CEO in the pharmaceuticals and electronics industries, was a director in aerospace, media and tech.

Definitely the type of resume that lets the imagination run wild with, “… wait, was he a lizard person …?”

i_like_apis··on Squeeze the hell out of the system you have
Yes I like the zero joins on hot paths approach. It can be hard to sell people on it. It’s a great decision for scaling though.
i_like_apis··on Squeeze the hell out of the system you have
I’m reminded of one of my favorite sayings:

You go to war with the army you have, not the army you might want or wish to have at a later time.

You may want to ignore that this this comes from Donald Rumsfeld (he has some great ones though: “unknown unknowns …”, etc.)

I think about this a lot when working on teams. Everyone is not perfectly agreeable or has the same understanding or collective goals. Some may be suboptimal or prone to doing things you don’t prefer. But having a team is better than no team, so find the best way to accomplish goals with the one you have.

It applies to systems well too.

What was the workflow to create the icon? It looks great.
i_like_apis··on I went to 50 different dentists: almost all gave a different diagnosis (1997)
I have always agreed with Vinod Khosla about doctors. Much of what they do today should be replaced by AI.

My own opinion: their arrogance is the most offensive part of the situation. There are plenty of great doctors and surgeons out there, don’t get me wrong. But the majority seem to think they are a superior species.

i_like_apis··on No one wants to talk to your chatbot
It really depends. If the chat is high quality and actually doing something helpful, then I want to talk to it. The adoption rate and usage stats of ChatGPT disagree with the tile.

Definitely lost any respect I had for her here.

Anyone able to infer what volume or mass of this substance they're claiming to have produced? How many unit cells?
i_like_apis··on Want fewer car accidents? Remove traffic signals and road signs (2017)
Absolutely no thanks. Where to start? There are so many poorly thought out ideas here it's like a firehose. Videos of crazy intersections somewhat "working" in the third world does not at all suggest a superior, safer, less congested, or more just system.

How about this:

> 5. See eye to eye: Right-of-way is negotiated by human interaction, rather than commonly ignored signs.

First of all, signs are definitely not "commonly ignored". The opposite is true. Right-of-way should be defendable in a fair court. Rules are the only way to do that. If two people see each other fine, what happens when they both "feel" right and enter each other's path?

The article is overloaded with fallacies.

i_like_apis··on Time to bring back asylums?
They are a large portion of ER cases and ambulance calls. If you go to an ER in an urban area, especially late at night, there's always a few crazy people raving in some sort of episode.

Yeah this seems like the title should be edited. @dang (not sure how to get his attention)
i_like_apis··on Reddit Threatens to Remove Moderators from Subreddits Continuing Blackouts
Maybe it’s too harsh that I used the term “whining idiots”, but if you’re going to make a retort you shouldn’t play into “whining” by being sarcastic. Sarcasm doesn’t win anyone over ever.
i_like_apis··on Reddit Threatens to Remove Moderators from Subreddits Continuing Blackouts
Seems fine to me. I’m still on it. It’s still active, I still see content. So some community is dark? Who cares. If i wasn’t subbed to it I don’t really care.
i_like_apis··on Reddit Threatens to Remove Moderators from Subreddits Continuing Blackouts
Yeah that’s exactly right. The reddit mods are the worst type of drama queens. They should have no special power to control the user experience or site traffic.

i_like_apis··on Read “Gravity’s Rainbow” fifty years later
Dubliners is a great little book. Probably the most approachable Joyce? He’s just playing with sounds and rhythms and images. The characters are interesting too but what I got from it was a lot of experimental and playful descriptions.
i_like_apis··on Reddit mods and scaling problems in social control
I find Reddit mods are particularly power crazy. Most of them seem to be doing it for power rather than for love of the content of their sub. There is so much personal bias and posts removed for personal reasons, or just to flex. I’m not speculating on the reason, but it’s definitely like that.

i_like_apis··on Certified 100% AI-free organic content
I think it’s pretty on-point though, because while Celiac disease is real (gluten intolerance), most people saying no to gluten don’t have it. The notion of gluten “sensitivity” or allergy is debated by medical science to say the least. It’s largely hypochondria, mass hysteria, and often a trendy meme for snobs and hipsters.
