i_am_jl··on Amazon and iRobot call off their planned acquisition
I was really hoping this was a novelty account that just went around HN threads, calling out misinformation.
i_am_jl··on Real estate giant China Evergrande will be liquidated
I'm very naive about all of this, can I ask what this means?

Evergrande has been ordered to liquidate, on paper this means that the Chinese subsidiary Hengda must also liquidate, but China's just... not going to liquidate Hengda? So instead of Evergrande's creditors dividing up Evergrande+Hengda's assets only Evergrande's assets are going to be liquidated? If that's right, how does that work? Does Hengda get bought and the purchase price distributed to creditors? Does China just tell Evergrande's creditors "too bad"?

i_am_jl··on HP CEO: "Our long-term objective is to make printing a subscription."
>The "price per page" has long been a efficient business model in the professional copier world.

This is true, but I'm not sure it's can be adapted for home use.

Every price per page agreement I'm familiar with involved leasing a machine and carrying a service contract. Both of those agreements make sense when we're dealing with something with a price tag of a new car that is a critical part of a business, but not so much when it costs a few hundred dollars and prints nothing more urgent than Amazon return labels.

i_am_jl··on United Airlines CEO says the airline will consider alternatives to Boeing
"alternatives to Boeing" is a very strange typo for "Airbus".
i_am_jl··on Now OpenAI CEO Sam Altman wants billions for AI chip fabs
>It doesn't appear that OpenAI is trying to get into the foundry game. Instead, it appears the plan is to funnel any funds raised into leading-edge chip manufacturers like TSMC, Samsung Electronics, and potentially Intel.
i_am_jl··on Did a 1997 merger ruin Boeing?
I was going to say that Boeing had already gotten that exemption, but I was thinking about a different exemption:

i_am_jl··on 24 Hours of Lemons
Folkrace! Kills me that it's not a thing in the US. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Folkrace
i_am_jl··on Is my plane a 737 MAX?
Damn. Too late to edit this comment.

The MAX 8 had the crashes due to MCAS problems. The underlying MCAS issue affected all 737 MAX variants.

i_am_jl··on Is my plane a 737 MAX?
MAX 8 had the MCAS problems. The recent plug door issues are affecting MAX 9s.
i_am_jl··on GE Vernova announces order of 674 wind turbines, providing 2.4 GW of power
An output of 2.4Gw would make it the second most powerful onshore wind farm by nameplate output. China's Gansu is much (3-4x) more powerful. The UK's most powerful offshore farm, Hornsea, is being built in phases. Their phase 1+2 nameplate output is ~2.5Gw from 339 turbines, when finished they're aiming for 6Gw.

It's big. It isn't the biggest and not really close to the biggest, but it's big.

i_am_jl··on GenAI could make KYC effectively useless
My boss had a KYC experience that involved uploading a short selfie video in which he had to turn his head/blink, smile, etc. This was recently, and in addition to the "photo of yourself holding a document with your photo in it" check.

I don't know enough about GenAI or the KYC process to say whether or not that could be faked, but I'm confident saying that with only traditional tools it's a barrier that would stop all but the most sophisticated actors.

i_am_jl··on Duolingo Cuts 10% of Contractors as It Uses More AI to Create App Content
If they were actually primed for success then 18 months of Duolingo should've given them a significant head start on the other students.

Judging by the tone, I'm assuming that didn't actually occur.

i_am_jl··on Music streaming service SoundCloud tunes up for sale
I was a SoundCloud subscriber for a few years until mid '19. Back then the value prop was music discovery + streaming access to artists who weren't on other platforms.

But I don't see any evidence of growth. Other platforms have stepped up their music discovery tools and broadened their catalogs. I ended up dropping the subscription because they didn't support Android Auto and said they had no plans to (in their defense, they introduced support in mid-2021).

It very much feels like SoundCloud was first to the space (were they? surely someone else did "YouTube but music" first) and have been riding that out.

i_am_jl··on Almost half of British teens feel addicted to social media – study
>‘We’re not saying the people who say they feel addicted are addicted,’ said Georgia Turner, a graduate student leading the analysis

Is it common to question the validity of self-identified addictions to other substances or behaviors? Is it common for people who aren't gambling addicts to say things like "I feel like I'm addicted to gambling"?

I suppose that the lead on the study doesn't want to overstate their findings, and there's obviously a social stigma that exists around admitting to gambling addiction that doesn't seem to exist for social media addiction, but still; it strikes me as unusual to be so openly questioning people about whether or not their perceived addictions are real.

i_am_jl··on A circular 3D-printed concrete bridge
This is very cool, and gorgeous, but being the pedant I am I feel I need to ask, "Is it really a bridge if it doesn't cross over an obstacle?"
i_am_jl··on A circular 3D-printed concrete bridge
That's Striatus, a predecessor to this construction called Phoenix.

i_am_jl··on LED Industrial Piercing
Regarding machining, you can/should read a lot of books but you're not going to learn how to run a mill or a lathe without getting your hands on one.

I took engineering tech and welding classes at my local community college as a non-matriculated student.

i_am_jl··on Google podcasts is shutting down
I imagine Google sees a benefit in funneling people into YouTube Music's ecosystem, ostensibly to sell YouTube Premium subscriptions.
i_am_jl··on Los Angeles police flights cost $3k an hour, audit finds
The really crazy part is that one of the factors that make emergency helicopter fleets more expensive than regular commercial chopper fleets is keeping the fleet at a state of readiness. Using them for ferrying officials around cancels those benefits out while driving the costs even higher.
i_am_jl··on Figma and Adobe abandon proposed merger
>Fireworks tried to fill the gaps between PS and Illustrator, but never got traction.

I couldn't disagree more. Fireworks was a perfect blend of raster and vector editing and was killer for early 2000s web design work. It was an amazing Macromedia product that got neglected by Adobe.

If I'm in a cynical mood I sometimes think it's because an up-to-date Fireworks would have cannibalized the sales of PS/AI, but I think that gives too much credit to Adobe.

i_am_jl··on Figma and Adobe abandon proposed merger
That's the worst part, the products are great. $20/month is reasonable for PS/LR considering that yearly releases were retailing for $500+ in the CS6 era. Cloud storage and generative AI credits are rolled into those costs. New features are showing up again. Regarding Photoshop, there are no real alternatives.

It's not that Adobe's depending on subscription engineering, it's creative pros 100% dependent on Adobe products being willing to put up with this shit because they have quality products with no alternatives.

i_am_jl··on Fitbit fined $11M for misleading consumers about their rights under consumer law
Garmin's watches have differentiating features, but any Garmin sportswatch will be sufficient for what you're doing. The biggest differences between the watches are the screen.

Venu/Vivoactive is a perfectly fine starting point. Move upwards if you need specific sensors, on-device music playback, etc. Upgrade to the Fenix if you want the better battery life and you're not bothered by the dim screen. Upgrade to the Epix if you want the better battery life of the Fenix and you can't live without a bright screen.

When I got my Fenix I thought the screen would bother me, but I got used to it quickly. If you've got a traditional smartwatch and you're moving to a Garmin, the Fenix might be an adjustment. Readability in direct sun can be problematic, (especially trying to read it on a bike) only you know whether or not that matters for your use case.

i_am_jl··on Italy bans cultivated meat products
Yeah, you're right. I suppose I can charitably interpret that number as removing the subsidies that also assist other farmers, but that makes the number far less useful for comparison.

Switzerland and South Korea have exceptionally expensive beef prices, sometimes 300% > US prices, but I'm hesitant to bring them up. I suspect that's more attributable to the availability of farmland and food prices in general than to the absence of subsidy for meat production.

i_am_jl··on Italy bans cultivated meat products
>We can't even make non-meat meat that's as cheap as meat and you didn't even have to grow or feed the cow.

In the US if you remove the government subsidies from meat production the price of a pound of ground beef jumps ~500%.

i_am_jl··on Italy bans cultivated meat products
I'm not sure what I expected their reasoning to be, but "we have to protect farmers" wasn't it.
i_am_jl··on Worker's death from blunt force injuries resulted in $7k fine for Amazon
Indiana's OSHA is one of the state plans that has authority over most private workplaces.

i_am_jl··on Daily coffee habits may affect brain plasticity and learning
It could be a withdrawal symptom if their ability to work returns after the withdrawal period ends.

I've known people who are completely unproductive if they're not on Adderall, or on cannabis, I can't think of any reason there aren't people who are entirely useless without caffeine.

i_am_jl··on Toyota SUV adverts banned in UK on environmental grounds
>Why would you buy a car tailored specifically for buying groceries?

For many people moving stuff from shops to their home is their primary use case for an automobile. Why wouldnt they buy a car tailored for that purpose?

i_am_jl··on David Attenborough is now narrating my life
Do we have a word for this yet? I feel like it's becoming common enough that we'll soon need one.
i_am_jl··on FBI Director: FISA Section 702 warrant requirement a 'de facto ban'
"A warrant requirement would amount to a de facto ban"

Yeah Chris, that is the point.
