iMerNibor··on People don’t want to commute; they just don’t want to miss out
Seems like they've removed it now, maybe they noticed they were DOSing themselves ;)
iMerNibor··on Google to stop showing news snippets for French users
> Soon, everyone will enable previews.

Only on the big websites though, why would a news org bother with small or tiny news aggregators?

The small websites will have to shut down while google will get even stronger. (This happened in germany already when they introduced a very similar law)

iMerNibor··on Kasper-Spy: Kaspersky Anti-Virus Puts Users at Risk
This is my main gripe with it aswell, got a fast nvme ssd and yet everything slows down to a crawl since the av needs to seemingly triple check files every time they're accessed
iMerNibor··on 'My son spent £3,160 in one game'
As a european my question is exactly the opposite, why would you ever use a credit card if you can just pay directly with the money you have?

The concept just seems to bizzare as someone who has grown up with their country specific bank cards - getting a credit card or even a visa/mastercard debit card is something fairly unusual.

I do realize you american people have to build a credit score and there's cashback schemes. Very different cultures I guess

iMerNibor··on Making Playgrounds a Little More Dangerous
That's how life works though. You can never eliminate all the risks.

So much is just out of your control, accidents happen - be it for kids or adults.

People are obviously not advocating for creating deadly play spaces for the future generation, but we did manage so far with the decent enough security standards.

Kids hurting themselves is normal, thats just part of learning their limits. I dont know how many times I fucked up and caused myself (non-critical) damage - did I do the same stupid mistake twice? nope. I could've died or seriously hurt myself a lot of times would I have just been unlucky, but I wasn't - cause there was a very slim chance anything bad could have even happened. Climbing trees? never slipped or jumped off a height that wasnt harmless. Cycling around? Never fell bad enough to do more than scrape my skin. And so many more instances of things going bad, but working out fine

iMerNibor··on Css-only-chat: A truly monstrous async web chat using no JS on the front end
This is actually an issue, to work around this as a dev you would usually use sprite sheets (one single image file with multiple images in it)
iMerNibor··on Man makes money from cold calls with his own higher-rate phone number (2013)
..unless you're not, since you don't know the magic prefix of the country in question.

There is a lot of variety https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Premium-rate_telephone_number

iMerNibor··on Microsoft Releases a Linux Version of the ProcDump Sysinternals Tool
https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=18097569 discussion for that, in case anyone else was curious
iMerNibor··on IPv6 breaks the 25% barrier
Only reason I can think of is it's way easier to get loads of ips to bypass rate limits with ipv6 than it is with ipv4
iMerNibor··on Hire by Google: Applicant tracking system and recruiting software (2017)
> What's in it for Google?

Data, presumably?

Also expanding the capabilities of their GSuite to capture more customers into their ecosystem

iMerNibor··on How Discord Handles Two and Half Million Concurrent Voice Users Using WebRTC
> voice activated mic

Which is a very sane default for most people

The only reason you'd want to use push to talk is either you have a lot of people in the channel, you have a loud background or you don't want people hearing stuff not designated for the discord voice (if you're streaming, have irl people in the same room - that kinda stuff)

iMerNibor··on Non-official site with a tampered version of KeePass
That was worded a bit ambiguously then

You're not really going to get around having to install "something" to sync your passwords if you want to have your passwords synced

You could use something like Syncthing if you just don't want to trust any company with your data

Otherwise, I cant really suggest a solution either

iMerNibor··on Is Facebook a publisher? In public it says no, but in court it says yes
Do any people actually associate the ads they see with the content next to them on any platforms hosting user generated content? (Or any platform whatsoever)

Like, I might if the ad is relevant to the piece of content in question. For example if I am watching construction/woodworking/industrial videos on youtube I won't be surprised if I see ads relating to tools, but thats about it.

I'm not gonna go ahead and buy this tool specifically because the ad is on a video I enjoyed, or associate another company with evil just because it's on a bad video.

Another guess would be it's simply the subconcious thing of seeing an ad to something potentially bad?

iMerNibor··on WhatsApp sends Cease and Desists for apps that use native Android APIs
> superiority of the product

It's not though. Once you become big and have reached critical mass you can pull off quite a lot of mediocre/bad stuff. Fact is the majority of people simply do not care as long as the product still works (they might not even be aware there's bad stuff going on behind the scenes) - too much effort to find a suitable alternative, convince everyone else to go to the same platform and so on

iMerNibor··on WebSub: Open protocol for distributed pub–sub communication on the internet
...and then there's even multiplexing in HTTP 2 (multiple http requests at the same time on the same connection)
iMerNibor··on The cold blue light of modern touchscreens poses health problems
ios does, not sure how good it is though
iMerNibor··on Patreon Is Suspending Adult Content Creators Because of Its Payment Partners
Stupid high fees from uk banks, for example (we're talking a flat ~15€ per transaction)
iMerNibor··on Keyboard Service Program for MacBook and MacBook Pro
> I'm the first person she's talked to about this I wouldn't have much confidence in that. I've heard that from 3 apple geniuses about the iphone 6 touch disease and about the safari browser bug (i forget which ios version) - both pretty obvious and well known issues.

It's pretty frustrating. Either apple just doesnt update their employees on issues or they just dont want to admit stuff until they have to (not implying it's malicious, but it certainly seems like it)

iMerNibor··on Ask HN: Have you shipped anything serious with a “serverless” architecture?
Not "serious", but I can definitely recommend it for simple (transformative as in webhook -> api) endpoints you don't want to care about hosting/maintaining a server for Low volume stuff is even free (at least on googles cloud)
iMerNibor··on How to disappear from the internet
> 'Security questions'

Not only should you do this for privacy, but also security. It's quite simple to get the answers to some of the questions websites will ask you..

Switching to random strings saved by a password manager (in a different file, with a different master key preferably), or written down on paper and stored securely is probably the best way to handle this

iMerNibor··on A Recycled IP Address Caused Me to Pirate Books by Accident
Just got some new ips and I've been on the other end of this. Some staging domain of a website still points to one of the ips I got and there's a health checker that keeps trying to ping /health on the domain.

Nowhere near the scale of this though, just some background noise I'll ignore

iMerNibor··on Windows 10 1803 Update Failure
Try the phone based activation next time, it's usually a lot more forgiving for activations + they have a free number in most countries
iMerNibor··on Please Stop Using Adblock (But Not Why You Think)
How would you deal with one of your customer faking ad views?

That's the main reason I hear from people why server-to-server ads won't work reliably, since the ad network "needs" more data to verify legitimate views

iMerNibor··on Scaleway – NVMe SSD Servers and Hot Snapshot
It's usually the low budget hosts that do this, since those will attract more shady "customers"

Easy way to get rid of those

iMerNibor··on AT&T updates firmware to block access to 1.1.1.1
This doesnt work well in practice though.

Most people don't have the grasp on the technicalities to even be able to make the decision to vote for a specific candidates because their internet access is sub-par

Not to mention if you vote for someone you also get all the other things that candidate aligns with, not just better internet.

(not super sure how voting on city/state level works in the us, but it should be accurate enough)

iMerNibor··on Ask HN: Clever ways to run a media-heavy website on a budget?
Some hints: ovh is good for eu/(northern) us (loadbalancing ip + vps behind it to spread load - be prepared to ditch vps if you're getting horrible performance), scaleway if you can live with just eu Probably as cheap as it gets from big providers

Obviously going to have to compromise (round robin dns > ~1gbps, self managed stuff), but thats just expected If it's just images probably just go with cloudflare

iMerNibor··on Half of European flights delayed due to system failure
Most (some?) airlines will just suck up the cost though in those extrodinary circumstances (bad weather for example), as a general policy to keep their customers sane. Not sure if they'll give you direct compensation, but most will pay for food/drink, some place to stay overnight if need be and rebook your flight for free too if it's cancelled outright.
iMerNibor··on Show HN: Devstream.tv – Watch developers code live
Also don't worry about having high fps a 10fps 1080p stream is a thousand times better for reading text than a 720p 30fps one
iMerNibor··on Consumption of ultra-processed foods and cancer risk
> What's wrong with fresh tomatoes?

They're super bland most of the time (unless you're willing to pay a premium for the more flavourful varieties and those can be hit and miss aswell) - I usually just get canned ones unless I specifically need fresh ones

I do get your point though, making a meal from scratch can be so much better, both taste and health wise, with a bit of practice - not to mention it's relaxing to do the actual chopping & cooking usually

iMerNibor··on How bad is IPv4 address exhaustion?
Yeah, this just proves how much of a non-issue ipv4 exhaustion is still

IPs are still cheap enough to "waste" - the only real motivator is going to be ipv4 price being too high which we're quite far off of
