holychiz··on Mozilla Mozaic: visualizing the future of bookmarks
Firefox has Sync so they can build on that for cross-device data search. Comm'on Firefox, you get paid for Google Search anyway so build an extension for this. Do it!
holychiz··on Mozilla Mozaic: visualizing the future of bookmarks
I'm too lazy to tag my bookmarks so i hope there's a way to throw all bookmarks into 1 buckets and have some way to search just on those bookmarks. Is there a way to do that now?
holychiz··on Ruby, PHP, MySQL, Perl, Free Hosting for geeks

holychiz··on Clipboard officially open to the public
please on your front page, provide a 1-line description and a compelling reason for a newbie to start using your product. I read so much faster than waiting for video to load and then watch. thx.
holychiz··on CEOs Who Should Have Already Been Fired
really?!!! upgrade from XP to 7 takes about 5 clicks. Please give an example of your difficulties.
holychiz··on GoDaddy's SOPA Support Sparks Calls for Boycotts and Domain Transfers
i wish my domains were still w/ GoDaddy just so i can transfer them out to protest. Arvixe hosting provides better services and didn't have to objectify women to advertise.
holychiz··on Ask HN: Your code editor, black on white or white on black?
light on dark theme: tango, +f.lux, +stylish on chrome for replacing popular websites w/ dark themes.
holychiz··on Get Paul Graham to take you to lunch
:) yeah, i know what you mean but I was trying to say that Paul Graham didn't tell me submit this story. :)
holychiz··on Get Paul Graham to take you to lunch
You can try to contact Paul himself or Bing Nursery. Paul Graham did a similar thing last year. Here's his blog entry: http://paulgraham.com/idealunch.html

check my submission from last year. http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1863923

holychiz··on Get 10 GB of space on the new Minus.com
tried to upload a big photo folder, 4.5GB, with 688 photos in a couple ways and neither works.

1. Love the simple drag and drop to upload idea. it didn't work, though, when i simply drop that big folders. it just hang, ie seems to be working away but gave no errors. after 4 hrs, i stopped it.

2. created a folder then dropped 688 photos in. Error msg: max limits # items is 100. why is this limit? I can think of many cases where people need to store more than 100 items in 1 folder.

suggestions: 1. please spelled out your limitations somewhere. 2. remove that 100 items/folder limit.

I like your website flow and UI. keep at it, guys.

holychiz··on TellFi (YC W11) brings Google Voice-like service to Canada, for free
Great idea. signed up for the free plan and didn't read the small print (50 free minutes and 30-days free trial). I'd be ok w/ 50 minutes free but not w/ 30-days trial. I'm an occasional user but my calls may vary in lengths since it's mostly to businesses and gov't agencies. If there was a plan to let me keep my free number but charge for overage minutes, I'd stick around. As it is, I can't use it, even the free plan, since I can't be sure that my TellFi number won't be cancel on me. Therefore, this TellFi number will not go out to my connections in Canada. I'm cheering for you guys, TellFi, even I can't use your services as is. Love your simple sign-up process.
holychiz··on A Visitor's Guide to Silicon Valley
I've been here 10+ years. SV is about people and activities rather than touristy sights. It's things like Friday night bike party in SJ, midnight roller-skating in SF (first time for me was pure adrenalin-pumping, flying down the hills around Union Square with full traffic and barely know how to brake!). Bay-to-Breakers "race :) ". Inventor Fair. 9:20 Special Swing Lindy dance club (just watching the dancers is breath-taking in itself). Hiking up Mission Peak in Milpitas or Rancho San Antonio, Cupertino for some righteous views of the Bay.

Yeah, this place is about doing things, I guess.

holychiz··on A Visitor's Guide to Silicon Valley
Yummy, cheap, authentic Vnese restaurants in South Bay area. Since business is in our blood and everybody thinks they can cook, Vneses here are racing each other to open restaurants, the result is a ton of choices for quality and prices for us foodies. Yeah, I'm Vnese myself, and think that the quality of Vnese restaurants here are second to none, including inside Vietnam.

For business meetings and casual outings, try Vung Tau restaurant @downtown SJ or Paloma Cafe @Grand Century Mall on Story Road (try the beef stew there).

Really casual outings, try the food court of Grand Century Mall, chicken noodles by Pho Ga An Nam on Story Road (not on Google Maps! you got to ask a Vnese dude for directions! :) )

a little more upscale: Three Seasons @Palo Alto, Xanh @Mountain View.

btw, "pho" really is fast-food for Vnese like hamburger for Americans.

bonus: the best "French" bakeries are actually Vnese! For mouth-watering cake and desserts, try the bakeries in the Lion Plaza on Tully Road.

holychiz··on Elementary OS
same question. Initially, I got the impression that they're building a new OS altogether, but the more I read, the more they seem to be just another Linux distro, albeit prettier.

Perhaps the team needs to be more clear on what makes El-OS different/better as the current description is too vague.

holychiz··on Please help Suicide hotline non profit
uhh, wouldn't you also want a number of simultaneous incoming calls? I mean if you get your service up and running, get everybody memorize your phone number and then incoming calls are greeted w/ busy signals. That wouldn't be good for suicidal situations, right ? :)

Google Voice is good for a single call but I don't know if it has call distribution. What you need sounds like a PBX w/ call hunt-group feature.

I think there are grants and financial aids from Western non-profits and NGOs available for things like what you're proposing. perhaps you can post request for helps in those forums also.

holychiz··on Son, as soon as someone puts their hands on you...
Good advice for my kids. I've had similar experiences, since I lived in many different places and at each place, I had to go through it again. After awhile, I started to do it pre-emptively by scoping out the assholes and wait for them to say anything even remotely provocative then I pounced. Since I'm smaller and weaker, I can't say I win even half the time, but they leave me alone 100% of the time after the fights. Some even become my friends.

Don't underestimate the element of surprise! Hit first, hit hard, son! :)

holychiz··on Ask HN: What martial arts do you practice? What do you recommend?
Another point to consider is your physical limitations or advantage. If you're a 6'2, 200 lbs guy, you can consider wider range of martial arts. if you're a short and skinny guy like me, TaiKwonDo would be murder. Aikido or JiuJitsu might be a better choice. I much preferred Aikido with its elegance in movements and philosophy. I found that Aikido requires you to be very in tune not only yourself but also w/ your opponent in the same way as you get in tune w/ the waves in surfing or the snows in snowboarding or your partner in salsa dancing. It's true that it's like dancing. It is also true that you can practice this art for a very long time, since it's not very physical demanding.
holychiz··on The Tools You Really Need to Maintain Your Home
for most people, a Black and Decker cordless screwdriver is enough, really. For big-job drills, instead of deWalt, get Makita impact driver 18v Lithium, compact, light, better grip, and a ton of power.

Hammer: article is spot on. Most under-rated tool. Get used all the time and yet most people buy the cheapest type.

holychiz··on Ask HN: What would you do with a newspaper-dot-com's built-in audience?
newspaper readers is a natural social network. please build tools to allow them to easily communicate and expressing their views with each other. For example, letters to editors should also be a topic that others can contribute also. Ads should be voted and/or comments upon. News items can be submitted and voted on. etc...Good luck, I'm cheering for you.
holychiz··on What's the most mind-blowing fact you heard/read in your life?
about 90% of my misery, unhappiness, frustration in life are due to one word: expectation. Once I understood that my sufferings are caused by unmet expectation of myself and/or others, my sufferings ease.

ps. still have high expectations, just not suffering.

holychiz··on Why dropping www can be a problem
thanks for a good idea.
holychiz··on Making it Suck
Can somebody explain to me why fcnfhdn got -3 points here? it's his/her opinion about the article's look which to me is his/her prerogative. it is feedback to the writer about one of the aesthetic element of the piece so it is relevant to the discussion. I'm puzzled at this seemingly random negativity. thanks.
holychiz··on Making it Suck
dude, the point is not to make your design awful. It's to address a specific needs, while ignore what it's not suppose to address. This is the point of good design: focus.

catchy headline, though. :)

holychiz··on Why Wesabe Lost to Mint
Thank you Marc for your insightful article. It must stung like the beejesus to work so hard and still get your head handed to you. It seems like your decisions were guided by your high-mindedness, believe in the best in the people, for the people, for example: people should work and understand closely their financial data. Betcha learned people are f@!#$%ing sloth, eh? Perhaps this is a case of self-project yourself onto your target market, then finds out that people are not like you at all, because if they were, they'd get off their asses and start a company, change the world or something like that :)

I tried wesabe and mint. Mint was easier to use. However, now that you explained a little bit about your Yodlee decision, I can sympathize w/ your conclusion. It turns out to be strategically deadly wrong but given your high-mindedness, don't beat yourself up too much. You can always take comfort in the fact that you were not "Webvan" :).

To get websabe to where it was, you must have made a number of "right" decisions also so you should reviews those too. You'll be back, I'm sure, and we look forward to your next venture. good luck.

ps. do consider the whole user-experience next time. pps. I ditched mint and went back to quicken for better control of my data and mint haven't got the cash account feature to fully work yet.

holychiz··on A product is not just about features. It's about experience.
Sachin is right. A product is more than a feature list. He may come across as arrogant for pointing to Apple et al. as example of great product but his point really is about experiencing a great product and to duplicate this feeling/experience to his product. For example, the unwrapping experience of an iPod does not show up on a feature list but damm, it feels good to open that box because Apple took the effort to make it seem like you're open a present. He should've point to Google Search as another example of great experience. I remembered my virgin search with Google. Relative to other search engine at the time, Google was insanely fast and relevant. Do you remember? if not Google, there must be some products that you fell in love with, now ask yourself if it was the feature list or the experience that you love. btw, having the right feature set at the right moment is part of experience.

Sachin got nothing to apologize for, Posterous is one of the great product out there. It just works! Go, Posterous!

holychiz··on Why is Microsoft giving away web traffic and abandoning users?
it could be that MS wants to re-focus on its strength: desktop OS. This might be a sign that MS position its software to be the traffic directors to preferred 3rd-party partners who are the best-of-the-breed in their respective market. In Windows past, MS first releases OS w/o important applications/features, let 3rd-parties fill in the niche, then develops features that won market acceptance. A modified version of this strategy might be simply making deals w/ 3rd-party web-sites to monetize the traffic.

If this is the thinking behind closing MS Live Blogs, then, yes, it's a tactical retreat but actually a step forward in their strategy.

The more interesting question might be how much of Windows Mobile OS influences this decision.

holychiz··on FBI drives for encryption backdoors
I'd support an encryption backdoors if they implement it similar to the backdoors in the existing telephony system. They must get a warrant to tap your telephone line and by law, the telecom company must comply. That's why all telephony switch have these "features" that can "copy/record" telephony packets for law enforcement purposes. If people don't have a problem with the existing system, I don't see why they would have a problem with data encryption backdoors.
holychiz··on Gobolinux - the filesystem is the package manager
it's a neat idea but why use Gobo instead of other distros? The intro page doesn't really explain its advantages and benefits.
holychiz··on End of the Road for Xmarks
sucks to have this ending after all your efforts. Xmarks was a great product. Hats off to you and your team and good luck in your next adventure.
holychiz··on Is It Sunday Already? Seems Like Only Yesterday It Was Saturday
I second this, and go a little further...stop reading TechCrunch. It jumped the shark awhile ago.
