Then again, I'm plenty cynical to realize that going green is most often a PR-move, in which case donating to charities doesn't quite cut it. Nevertheless, if nature is the priority, a good charity (there are some bad, or at least inefficient ones, too) is best.
The news item you linked to isn't a problem of someone misunderstanding economic principles, but of a simple mistake and the resulting bug - there shouldn't have been an additional reward for surviving cargo.
It's true that for the great majority of people, going out and having a ton of social relationships correlates with increased happiness. For me, not so much. I'm a very happy and optimistic person, yet I don't go out (here meaning social stuff besides the usual seeing and talking to a few friends, talking with colleagues, etc) more than twice a month. And that's actually a lot for me. This does not mean that I don't enjoy socializing now and then - I do. But I can say from personal experience that it is definitely NOT a necessity for me. I've sometimes done so for several months at a time, and have not noticed any side-effects.
About the subtle aspect, this may very well be because they genuinely believe it's a good idea other governments may agree with.
But, yeah, it's still a terrible idea.
I'm (partially) kidding, of course. Interesting feature, and interested to see how this is going to work out for them.
Then perhaps you shouldn't visit the Oatmeal. His site is full of that kind of thing. Some people like it, some people don't. You're apparently in the second group. ;)
Wash, rinse and repeat, and suddenly you're two times as productive. :)
I would argue that most of us don't have personal assistants and lawyers to deal with our petty problems 24/7.
I always cringe when I see lists like these. These books aren't even interesting! Pretty much everything you need to know about becoming an entrepreneur can be found on PG's site, and the rest can easily be found by searching the web. There is no hidden secret to working hard and solving problems.
I'd much rather spend all the time I'd be reading these books by reading something interesting and useful, say, a book on macroeconomics (you can of course pick a different subject if you don't like thise one) or even fiction (at least that's fun).
