heyheyhey··on Experts say Olympics must be moved or postponed because of Zika
Well, they did move the World Cup to the Winter thus, causing the domestic leagues in Europe to lose plenty of money.
heyheyhey··on The Single Piece of JavaScript on HN
What's the rationale behind not making this feature available for everyone?
heyheyhey··on Firms help websites evade ad blockers
> The morality surrounding ad blocking is up for debate, but I do not feel guilty because there is no OBLIGATION for me to view ads. Just because you serve them up does not mean I need to view them.

Do you not tip when you go to restaurants (in America)?

heyheyhey··on The TV antenna is making a comeback
NFL is doable although there's no obvious solution for MNF except using someone else's login.

NCAAF is a little random since some games are on non-cable but a majority aren't. I'm on the west coast and the games are usually on FS1 or Pac-12 network.

NBA is pretty much impossible until the ABC has their Sunday games and the NBA finals.

heyheyhey··on New Chromecast 2015
> Is this intended to compete with the AppleTV/FireTV/Roku?

No, that would be the Nexus Player.

The CC competes with other streaming sticks...like the Fire TV stick, Roku Streaming stick, etc.

heyheyhey··on Ask HN: Where to move within US?
I would say Portland, Austin, and Seattle.

For startup ecosystem, Seattle probably has the best followed by Austin and then Portland.

For cost of living, Seattle is the most expensive. I'm not sure about Austin but Portland has been increasing the past couple years.

heyheyhey··on A 15-year-old weightlifting prodigy
They aren't the same meaning though.

The writer's analogy is much more accurate. MJ is widely considered the greatest basketball player of all time. To say someone is the MJ in a sport is saying that someone is the best in history for that particular sport. This kid doesn't even have a single gold medal.

Lebron James, on the other hand, was extremely hyped up as a high schooler. Everyone pretty much said he was going to be the next MJ. The potential for LBJ was limitless; same goes for the weightlifter.

heyheyhey··on Take-home interviews
> We expect them to spend about 3 hours on the project (or as long as they want to spend to show us that they're a good programmer).

3 hours isn't too bad. I had a friend interview with some hedge fund and he said he probably spent 30+ hours on a take-home project (he didn't get the job). I thought that was way too excessive for just 1 interview.

heyheyhey··on Ask HN: Just curious, how prevalent is the use of nootropics‎ among HN members?
Yeah, I take l-thenaine + caffeine in the morning. I can't drink coffee since it seems to give me acid indigestion in the morning but caffeine pills are the perfect substitute for me.

Keeps me alert and awake in the morning, which is when I tend to have the least motivation.

heyheyhey··on Why We Shut Down Reddit’s ‘Ask Me Anything’ Forum
> Meanwhile we have at least some indication that there were support well beyond the moderators, in the form of heavily upvoted threads with large number of comments in support of shutdowns for many subreddits.

To be honest, it's hard to argue either way. Going by your indication, if we look at /r/all the past week and all the submissions comparing Ellen Pao to Kim Jong-Il or Mao Zedong, would you say reddit widely supports this comparison?

heyheyhey··on Why We Shut Down Reddit’s ‘Ask Me Anything’ Forum
> It wasn't really a hostage-taking, the shutdown has / had widespread support among the user base.

Don't believe this for one second. Like many others have said, it was mostly a vocal minority. /r/pics has 8+ million subscribers and you think a majority of those subscribers wanted it to be shut down?

I'm honestly surprised the mods have the power to shut down a default subreddit.

heyheyhey··on Singapore Rising: The Plot to Be the Next Big Tech Hub
> I became "cat relo guy", for one place, because I mentioned that it'd cost $7k to move my cats... that negotiation, predictably, fell through

How many cats do you have and why did it cost so much?

heyheyhey··on Oculus Rift
Yeah, I was disappointed they didn't announce the price. I can understand as if it were expensive (which I expect it will be), it would probably be a distraction to their announcements.
heyheyhey··on Android M Developer Preview and Tools
> Battery - We’re making Android devices smarter about managing power through a new feature called Doze. With M, Android uses significant motion detection to learn if a device has been left unattended for a while. In this state, Android will exponentially back off background activity, trading off a little bit of app freshness for longer battery life.

Will this improve wakelock performance that has been plaguing Android for years?

heyheyhey··on Show HN: Bento – Delivering custom bento boxes in 15 minutes in SF
Are consumers expected to tip?
heyheyhey··on Elon Musk: Tesla cars will have “autopilot mode” by summer
> Does Tesla have some way to determine wakefulness or to safely pull over if the driver fails to respond?

Not sure about Tesla but the technology DOES exist and some cars do currently have it.

heyheyhey··on To tip or not to tip?
>From what I've seen, almost all restaurants where servers are tipped also pay those servers something low like $3/hr.

This isn't true for every state.

heyheyhey··on Fired
Wasn't this guy called out by Julie Ann Horvath, the one who complained about harassment at Github? Guess this has nothing to do with that?
heyheyhey··on Show HN: Monthly earnings of 23 Twitch streamer
"We considered that only 24% of the viewers get to see the ads put up by the streamer according to a poll."

I don't know, I feel like that number just seems way too high.

heyheyhey··on Android Lollipop is out, but almost no one is using it
> I ahve a 2012 Nexus 7 and still have not gotten the 5.0.2 update.

FWIW, I just got mine yesterday. My 2012 n7 was god awful on 5.0 and it seems to be waaaay better on 5.0.2.

heyheyhey··on How Software in Half of NYC Cabs Generates $5.2M a Year in Extra Tips
> I would just assume tipping would be similar to eating out in the US (10% for bad service, 15% norm, and 20%+ for good service)

It's actually 15% for bad service and 20% for normal. Kinda strange that tipping has been inflated from the standard 10-15% the past decade or so.

heyheyhey··on Kyoto taxi drivers reduce robberies by 50 percent by doing nothing
Lots of benches downtown (at least in PDX) have a bar in the middle to discourage bums from comfortably sleeping on them. The bar doesn't affect citizens other than being forced to share the bench.
heyheyhey··on Twitch acquires eSports pro-gaming team Evil Geniuses
> Like the NBA owning one of its own teams.

NBA has owned teams in the past; most recently being the New Orleans Pelicans from 2010-2012.

heyheyhey··on Show HN: Dating Ring (YC W14) – We do the work, you do the dating
> Unless they're on OKC to look for dates, they have no business being there.

This isn't true. Some look for companionship on OKC. Why they use OKC for it, I have no idea but 100% of the user base isn't strictly for dates/hooking up.

heyheyhey··on Behind League of Legends, E-Sports’s Main Attraction
SC:BW got me into programming. Rigging UMS maps with triggers that only I knew of...ahh good times.
heyheyhey··on The Limits of Friendship
> And I thought I was doing well with 4 casual friends and one close friend.

On the contrary, I have many casual friends but 0 close friends. I'd say I'm pretty extroverted and like having a wide social circle but the lack of close friends does bother me sometimes.

heyheyhey··on Eleventh Grade Tech Trends
> There's a lot of weird things that I notice many people do (including myself) related to metrics like this. I'm 24, and a lot of my friends use Snapchat; however, they've switched to using the personal stories over sending actual messages. I really don't like this, mainly because you can see who has viewed your story. And there's a sense of anxiety where you don't want to look at other people's stories if they don't look at yours. So I just avoid it altogether.

Really? I never got that feeling. While I do check to see who looked at my story, I always figured people who didn't check either don't use Snapchat on a daily basis or just didn't have the time to see it within the window. I do get your anxiety when it comes to FB's likes or IG's hearts but since Snapchat doesn't have that and is so ephemeral, I don't get any of that.

heyheyhey··on Eleventh Grade Tech Trends
> Also the thing with Instagram following ratios is frightening. My brother talks all the time about following and then unfollowing people to trick them into follow you, it's all an unnecessary popularity game (I guess I was never one to understand popular people though).

It is interesting and the article touches on a reason Snapchat is so popular is because it gets rid of the whole non-judgmental aspect that occurs in FB/Instagram.

heyheyhey··on Kevin Rose’s New App Tiiny Lets You Share Photos That Disappear in 24 Hours
> Rose told TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington that the app is currently going through the iOS App Store approval process and should launch very soon.

What about Android? Another app that's releasing on iOS first? :(
