hevelvarik··on Sir David Attenborough makes stark warning about species extinction
This reads more like sci-fi fantasy than a typical comment on hackers news.
hevelvarik··on I lost €4k in a Facebook scam
But until they do the dichotomy isn’t false
hevelvarik··on Orcas striking sailing boats in the Straits of Gibraltar
I’ll read through that article but since the article discusses a general dynamic it’s fair to reason about whether and to what extent that dynamic is in play in a given particular context . It seems that the point of ‘contention’ here is food scarcity and competition for Tuna, and it seems the orca are losing the point and either the humans have acquired the role of apex predator in that particular part of the ocean or at the least the orcas’ services as such are no longer required.

It may be that reading this article will provide the wherewithal to answer this question but perhaps there’s someone here who understands the particulars and can shed some light.

hevelvarik··on Orcas striking sailing boats in the Straits of Gibraltar
>This tiny population’s presence is of huge importance, and if human activity is affecting their behaviour, human activity must be regulated.

This is thrown in at the end. Why is the presence of 30-50 adult orca distributed over 5 pods in this particular part of the ocean of huge importance?

hevelvarik··on Your Phone Is Your Castle
It will be great to have more players in the smart phone OS domain so I hope this makes it big. On the other hand, the downside of taking the security and privacy of your phone into your own hands, is that ... you’ve taken the security and privacy of the phone into your own hands.

I’m happy to pay Apple to do it for me because my phone is nowhere near my main or most important computing device and I also quite like that they poke google and Facebook in the eye from time to time. Sure, Apple is just a profit driven enterprise like the rest but their business model is directly related to keeping users happy at least for some value of users and happy.

The only downside for me is that I can’t write an app for my device because I haven’t bought into the Apple computer ecosystem.

hevelvarik··on The lack of namespaces on crates.io is a feature
I don’t know Rust but have learned enough about it to know that lack of namespaces in crates.io and anything at all Rust related Is inarguably a feature
hevelvarik··on The Long-Term Stock Exchange Opens for Business
Great, creating an equity exchange is a heavy endeavor and I’ve seen no more than a couple of medium posts which speak only to the problem but nothing towards your solution. I’m definitely missing something; where’s the beef? Is there something of your solution that we can read?
hevelvarik··on Is the web getting slower?
since we’re blaming here, I blame the dominance of web by multi billion dollar tech companies. This requires any site/app that wishes to be taken seriously to have a look and feel comparable to the big guys and the only way you do that on a budget is with a hefty heap of framework abstraction.
hevelvarik··on On finally learning to program at the age of 40
I’m the same way, I study other things and hope for the day to have to learn a more interesting language than the ones I’m paid to work in. But at the end of the day, taking a step back, there are a good deal of more helpful things for a professional dev to learn than languages he or she isn’t writing anything in currently.
hevelvarik··on On finally learning to program at the age of 40
Wow wasn’t expecting this to climax with Rust
hevelvarik··on Cracking the Culture Interview
Sorry this smells toxic to me. In my experience the overwhelming majority of people I worked with contributed positively to the culture, most likely because the hiring managers refrained from hiring shitty people, and most people who aren’t shitty contribute positively to a team dynamic when the duties align with their area of competence.

I’ll go out on a limb and assert that if your professional culture is such that you need to focus long and hard to figure out who will and won’t fit in, your culture is what is problematic.

hevelvarik··on Amazon is filled with fake reviews and it’s getting harder to spot them
They could outsource it. It’s wondrous that they haven’t solved this yet. I have to suspect they prefer it this way.
hevelvarik··on Carmack on not being a power editor user
I’ve tried to force myself to pick up vim a few times but after getting a bit older I realized that I don’t want to become one with my machine as a fighter pilot might be with their plane. I like the distance the mouse move and click provides me. I do more thinking and reading than typing anyways
hevelvarik··on The social and economic costs borne by young people without offices
I love everything about WFH save for that I get far less exercise not making my daily MTA
hevelvarik··on Amazon deletes job listings for analysts to track ‘labor organizing threats’
Ok haircut checks out everything just fell in to place
hevelvarik··on Git Sucks, What Am I Doing Wrong?
There’s too little information in this post. As other have said your complaint aims at the workflow not the technology and you’ve provided none of the reasons your company adopted the new workflow. I can think different situations to which alternatively each one of which is better suited.

Though doubtlessly this new workflow is harder on you than the previous.

hevelvarik··on AI Assistants Have Poor Usability: Study of Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri (2018)
I use Siri all the time for sending/reading text/WhatsApp messages and making calls and setting/stoping alarms and timers, and creating notes and taking pictures (Siri will open the app to where you are a click away from taking the picture. I also use Siri as a dictionary and weather forecaster.

I wish Siri was more powerful, to do things like create contacts and turn of the phone but Apple seems super conservative about what it will allow Siri to do

hevelvarik··on Melancholy of obsolete futures: on Soviet Brutalism
Hardest thread to read without the article in HN history
hevelvarik··on How Shopify reduced storefront response times with a rewrite
>An example of these foundations is the decision to design the new implementation on top of an active-active replication setup. As a result, the new implementation always reads from dedicated read replicas, improving performance and reducing load on the primary writers.

Could someone please explain how the ‘as a result’ follows from the active-active replication setup?

hevelvarik··on New academic journal only publishes 'unsurprising' research rejected by others
Well said. I don’t understand why public institutions at the very least aren’t required to share their research. And considering that the majority of higher ed public or private wouldn’t last a day without federal backed loans, I’m not sure only public institutions should be held to this fire.

I take actual pleasure in pirating research papers.

hevelvarik··on Rideshare operations are being suspended in California
A sad state of affairs. Population loves the service. People lining up in droves to be paid to provide it. Government stomps it cause reasons.
hevelvarik··on Launch HN: Epihub (YC S20) – Shopify for teaching online
This is exciting. Are you planning or do you already provide a mechanism for discovery? Meaning a means to browse the available service providers along with reviews or the like?

I’ve read that Shopify is doing something similar now, and while for them this comes rather late in their product life cycle, for your product I’d think it more important and thus worthy of earlier consideration.

hevelvarik··on Ask HN: Newly Remote Workers – Where Are You Moving?
Wait, you’re OP so this really happened. Well played
hevelvarik··on Let's Build a 28-Core Raspberry Pi Cluster
Fascinating, pardon my ignorance but I’m new to this home brew clustering thing. How is the coordination between the nodes handled for a use case like serving a wordpress blog? Or are we talking about n-1 nodes behind a load balancing master node?
hevelvarik··on The case for why Google should be regulated as a public utility
It’s not a tactic without intent

And if you hold that something can be a tactic without intent, then anything and everything is a tactic to bring about its related reaction.

hevelvarik··on Atlassian tells employees they can work from home forever
Underrated point
hevelvarik··on Atlassian tells employees they can work from home forever
Unless you’ve mastered one of those tools, it’s impossible to match the fluidity of thought to text or visualization that a standard whiteboard provides you.

I’m also not convinced that there is a tool that when mastered can provide the same fluidity, but I can claim that, and to the contrary I’d love a recommendation.

hevelvarik··on Abolish the Police? Survivors of the Chaos in Seattle Aren’t So Sure
This is rich. The comments are largely in favor of diminishing police funding presumably to protect black people whereas black people want nothing of the sort https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.newsweek.com/81-black-ameri...

Truly bizarre

hevelvarik··on Magnasanti: The Largest and Most Terrifying SimCity (2010)
Someone had to do it.
hevelvarik··on Magnasanti: The Largest and Most Terrifying SimCity (2010)
That’s probably the underpinning of his correct argument that we have zero clue and no leg to stand on to claim that modernity has more mental illness than any other, much less every other, period in history
