hevelvarik··on Android phones are sending significant amount of user data with no opt-out [pdf]

hevelvarik··on How Apple’s rivals plan to catch up with the M1 chip
Why can’t msft just remove all the asshole from its OS. They would crush this war.
hevelvarik··on Poll: Have you experienced depressive symptoms over the past two weeks?
These polls are self selecting. People round here aren’t into polls generally (evidenced by that the feature is largely unknown) and probably rarely respond to them. An exception to that is when the poll positives speak directly to something you care deeply about and identify strongly with. On top of that people who are going through this may be inclined to share not least because it’s always comforting to those going through an issue to know that they aren’t alone.

In sum, this poll is more an opportunity to share and participate in discussion about this issue than it is about determining the proportion of hn readers who are dealing with this issue

hevelvarik··on NYC pilot tries mental health responders in place of police
I did my part: I read the article. I still have zero clue as to how evaluate whether any particular call will warrant this new or the previous, alternative approach.
hevelvarik··on Ask HN: Are you depressed?
It’s very much a self selecting poll.
hevelvarik··on The U.S. Divorce Rate Has Hit a 50-Year Low
I didn’t see the actual study but wonder how much this actually speaks to the likelihood of a new marriage staying whole. The graph states that the figure is x divorces per thousand marriages so far so good. But they also say that the rate of marriages is also declining which seems to indicate that the proportion of old marriages to new marriages per thousand is rising in which case at least some of the divorce rate decline may be because a survivor bias embedded in the older marriages?
hevelvarik··on San Francisco voters approve taxes on highly paid CEOs, big businesses
I downvoted you because I am insulted by your being insulted by his attitude while being insulted. (I didn’t really downvote you)
hevelvarik··on San Francisco voters approve taxes on highly paid CEOs, big businesses
That’s 51/40 in favor of spending more over those 8 years and in 2012 SF wasn’t frugal. Some increase is justified but not more than 1 to 1.
hevelvarik··on San Francisco voters approve taxes on highly paid CEOs, big businesses
This is the best example of “speaking from experience” I’ve ever read.

The question how representative are you of the general homeless population in SF. I would guess not much. Am I wrong?

hevelvarik··on San Francisco voters approve taxes on highly paid CEOs, big businesses
Excellent point
hevelvarik··on San Francisco voters approve taxes on highly paid CEOs, big businesses
It’s not so simple.

1 and 2 are either your largest groups or at least very large groups.

Getting addicts ‘clean’ is a sub problem at least almost as hard as the general, and it’s somewhere between hard and impossible to keep someone in a rehab or a mental facility against their will, and I doubt Reagan is to blame for that.

Basically, a large proportion of 1 and 2 are effectively in camp 4.

hevelvarik··on Stupid mistakes I made while building my first startup
Interesting, I thought YC provides a lot of coaching for the business side of things they messed up on. I vaguely recall reading against all those practices in YC related blogging.

I guess they aren’t too heavy handed about it.

Also the coding on the floor thing, wow.

But after all is said and done, major props for getting to be a YC startup to begin with!

hevelvarik··on Deutsche Bank to cut ties w Trump after the election and could seize his assets
The title of article is so misleading it’s almost a lie:

>But the bank is now reportedly keen to shed its last connection to the president: three loans, totaling about $340 million, personally guaranteed by the president and taken against the value of his properties. The loans are said to start becoming due for repayment in two years.

>The three officials told Reuters that bank executives were not concerned about the president's capacity to repay the loans, partly because of the time left before they are due.

“Could seize assets...” for business loans, the payments for which start becoming due in 2 years, and that the article does not claim are in any doubt...

hevelvarik··on Scientist David Sinclair on why we age and why he thinks we don’t have to (2019)
I believe it was changed. I could be mistaken but I read it plural.
hevelvarik··on Scientist David Sinclair on why we age and why he thinks we don’t have to (2019)
I find the title of this submission profoundly disturbing and unworthy of this platform. To me “Scientists believe...” implies a lot more than what this article describes.
hevelvarik··on “Before cancelling your subscription, you must agree to the following”
I had a gold watch, a family heirloom, that I had repaired. It was missing the buckle. The jeweler, a large one, sent it off to a 3rd party and it came back smaller around the wrist...

I was naive but I couldn’t conceive of that happening, going through a legitimate and large jewelry business.

hevelvarik··on “Before cancelling your subscription, you must agree to the following”
Interesting theory. And indeed, it is just. But On its face it negates the validity of any drive by scroll down to accept contract, but I believe they are binding to some extent at least. Maybe the scroll down click is considered at tacit acceptance of what’s inside.
hevelvarik··on Public Apology to Jeremy Howard
Wow this that story where the dude said he thought the other guy was wrong. And this is their response to their handling of it.

They weren’t sure if there was a violation but responded to a couple complaints by bringing this guy in front of a committee of sorts to get to the bottom of it and are now investigating their process to ensure a better process

What a torrential tempest in the tiniest of teapots, sometime you can take yourself too seriously.

For the younger among us there was a time when you could organize a conference or group or project without conjuring a set of rules governing social interactions, and establishing processes for the addressing of rule violations and appealing said addressing.

There’s nothing to be done about it. If people enjoy being treated and treating everyone like babies then it is what it is.

hevelvarik··on Amazon destroys $1.5m of sellers inventory – now homeless
This is a case for the courts. The article is completely one sided, and there’s no way to know whether or not some or much or most of the merchandise was counterfeit.

He does admit to ignoring up to 11 notices that his inventory would be destroyed if left unclaimed. He mentions conflicting dates for the notices but we’ve no way of knowing to make of that.

I don’t know what to say other that I read the piece with some interest and for all know it’s a work of fiction, but heh I clicked.

hevelvarik··on Secrets and spies: Behind the doors of the GCHQ
Yeah the UK would be much better off without an intelligence agency and if only the West would lay down its arms. Imagine!
hevelvarik··on Secrets and spies: Behind the doors of the GCHQ
Anything more you care to say about what most Americans seem to ...

You have to have quite the vantage point to have insight like that.

It’s more than likely that you all on the other side of the Atlantic aren’t our betters

hevelvarik··on Gitlab Blocked Iranians’ Access
It was obvious and you are dealing with pedants
hevelvarik··on Adobe XD for Visual Studio Code
Are you running a browser with multiple tabs, just boggles my mind how that works with 4gb. Are you using a funky light weight window manager. I truly wish to know how you manage it.
hevelvarik··on How Satya Nadella turned Microsoft around
If when people say big tech they exclude msft (and include Facebook), they are simply wrong. .net, sqlserver, power bi, hell office are the blood flowing through Government and industry. Gaming is also tech and azure will get there if they just keep at it. The startup world is only a slice of the pie, and not the largest or most important .

If you don’t live on the coasts, and you want to invest in a stack that will keep you employed indefinitely and wherever you go, you pick dotnet hands down, and I say this as someone who hasn’t written a line of dotnet code

hevelvarik··on Dutch Ethical Hacker Logs into Trump’s Twitter Account
I recall there being a story about Obama either not being able to use his first choice of phone or else there having had to have been made some sort of accommodation to allow him to at the beginning of his first term.

(I think it was an iPhone vs Blackberry thing)

I haven’t looked into this story too deeply but I find it incredible on its face. If it is true then it’s an absolute shock and a wonder of wonders why it wasn’t compromised sooner.

hevelvarik··on Dutch Ethical Hacker Logs into Trump’s Twitter Account
I though that too, well the part about the hacker anyway, until I ... read the article. They are ‘ethical’ hackers in the sense that they immediately informed the Trump administration.

Whether that’s actually ethical or not is a tangential discussion because the existence and application of term is not controversial.

hevelvarik··on America's True Unemployment Rate
Ok so the article points out well known deficiencies in the widely used definition for unemployment and presents a nation wide figure using a magical undefined number called the living wage applied against a data set revealed only to Axios on HBO whatever that is.

So what to make of this? That the unemployment figure doesn’t reflect the actual experience of job seeking in the USA...

We know this and there’s nothing in this article adding to our intuition.

hevelvarik··on House Hunting in France: A Once-in-a-Millennium Castle for $3.3M
Wow, why? That’s hard to fathom.
hevelvarik··on Reading too much political news is bad for your well-being
Well then that’s bad news because boy have things changed. Growing up in Cali in 80s with a robust social life, I cannot remember having or hearing a single political discussion at all.

Now I think it’s the norm for kids to have deeply felt political views.

I wish I knew how that changed. Maybe it’s the teachers because I also cannot recall any political discussion in me elementary or high school classrooms.
