Here is a fantastic podcast describing Fenn’s story: http://www.eisradio.org/item/003/
To underscore how terrible ELN was at our site, many managers instructed their reports to keep traditional paper notebooks, photograph each page, and upload to an ELN entry. Countersignatures were then performed on the ELN platform. This was at a relatively small Merck site, and maybe the issue wasn’t as pervasive elsewhere.
Variant classification alone is an incredibly challenging problem. Oncologists are not geneticists, and most hospitals do not have in-house geneticists. Additionally, there is potential liability involved with mischaracterizing genetic alterations.
I'd be interested when/if this launches on iOS. Perhaps add an email capture to the landing page?
Are you focused too much on work? When is the last time you took a week or two off just to mentally reset? How is your social life? I was interested in a specific field a few years back, but I had zero friends or connections in said field. I started a meetup group around the topic, grew it to 1500 members in just over a year, learned a TON about the field in the process, and made invaluable and exclusive connections that would have been otherwise very difficult. It was a beautiful blend of social and professional advancement and I highly recommend something similar.
Last point: if you're considering grad school, be aware that this is much more accessible and palatable early in your career vs. late. If you have a shot at getting into an MIT or Stanford, why no give it a whirl? It isn't necessarily the degree that is of value, but the high-end network you'll obtain in the process.
Keep your head-up -- motivation will ebb and flow throughout your life. This is normal and a sign that change is in order.
Of course there is manual work done by Legal that can't be easily automated, but that is just one component of the bottleneck.
I'm by no means discounting his accomplishments and skills, but rather highlighting that it isn't quite as reckless as it first appears.
Would genuinely love to hear about companies that don't require this deposit.
Drug development is hard, expensive, and littered with failure. There isn't a simple approach to this problem.
As far as I can tell from the Indiegogo video, Amino appears to be a simple bioreactor that includes competent cells + some sort of plasmid to express genes related to bioluminescence -- am I missing anything else? Pretty compact and neat; I would have loved to play with one of these as a child.
