henryw··on I Hit $115k/Month with a Status Quo Improvement
> Also, I sleep with a CPAP machine, and I've found that it's enabled me to get by with only five to six hours of sleep, allowing me to be productive during most of my waking hours. Before my CPAP, I was sleeping 9-10 hours a day just to feel normal. It's weird, but my CPAP machine has been the biggest contributor to my productivity gains in the last few years.

This is my first time hearing about CPAP. Has anyone else tried this?

Thanks for suggesting Brave. Just downloaded it, and it seems very well put together. Interesting how that plan to pay you to view ads.
henryw··on Learning to Read in Your 30s Profoundly Transforms the Brain
I started 2 years ago around 32, but I did mostly audiobooks. So far I have finished about 90 books, chosen mostly by Amazon/Goodreads/Audible ratings. I take a few lines of notes for each book while listening to help me remember what the book was about later.

henryw··on Preventing Muscle Loss as We Age
Maybe they can start with 1-2x and then work their way up to 4-5x after awhile.
henryw··on Preventing Muscle Loss as We Age
Training 4-5x a week is within your control. Winning the lottery is not.

I get up every weekday morning at 5 to 6am to do a spin or group fitness class and lift 1 to 2 times per week Arnold superset style. I'm loving this lifestyle. (I guess the gym being Equinox helps.)

henryw··on Life expectancy declines seen in U.S. and other high-income countries
I'm shocked it's not caused by all the crappy diet that is still so mainstream: sugary foods, government food pyramid made by lobbyists, meat overdose, etc.

I read in another article that Apple usually is number one in the holiday quarter.

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ve added it to my Audible queue.
henryw··on Spend analysis of 6 years, 686 rides, and $12k spent on Uber (2017)
I had a BMW and drove fewer miles than that. The maintenance alone for random things breaking (run flat tires punctured, oil leaks, breaks, battery, etc.) was like $1k/yr. Depreciation was also huge over 6 years.
henryw··on How to Stop Negative Thoughts in 180 Seconds Without Meditating
Here's one trick to get out of a "suffering state" and get to a "beautiful state":

Silently in your head, send blessings (joy, happiness, love, inner peace, etc.) to people that you encounter in life and people that are playing a part in your thoughts. Do this whenever you feel the oncoming of an unnecessary negative emotion.

After 30 to 90 days, a new habit will be formed. And, probably, a new default peaceful internal state.

henryw··on Ask HN: How to stop feeling depressed about whether you will be successful?
Exercise a lot. Practice yoga. Be detached from the uncontrollable outcomes and focus all your energy on doing what you can do.
henryw··on Adopting a more active lifestyle could benefit your personality decades from now
I’ve been making myself get up around 6am to take 1 or 2 classes at the gym. After work, I go for an hour for yoga or just watch something on my iPad Pro while walking on an inclined treadmill.

I think the key is to sleep early and get up early. Also, watching shows at the gym instead of at home helps.

henryw··on Adopting a more active lifestyle could benefit your personality decades from now
I recently started going to the gym for yoga, cardio classes, or just walking on an inclined treadmill for about 2 hours per day. This has been the best I've felt in life. I don't mind doing this for the rest of my life. The quieting of mind from yoga really helps me step back and see things from a higher viewpoint (like not being stuck in a local minimum).
henryw··on Does Depression Have an Evolutionary Purpose? (2017)
Try reading "The Untethered Soul" by Michael Singer and/or "Letting Go" by David Hawkins. Depression could be partly due to an acquired habit of always paying attention to fear based thoughts (like lacking xyz), which came from evolution. The cure is to raise the emotional level of thoughts to love for self and compassion for others (by having compassion for others, you give it to yourself). Another cure is to not pay attention to the chattering of the mind. If you wrote down all the chattering of the mind, you may find that >90% of them are useless. Paying attention to the chattering brings more useless chattering.

All this sounds new age, but it works.

henryw··on Ask HN: What do you use to align your daily todos with your long term goals?
I've found OneNote to be very good for journaling and plans. I have a tab for daily journaling for each year, and I have a tab for my current long term goal with steps broken down.
