hehetrthrthrjn··on A US Visa in 937 Days
People seem to generally not understand how borders work. In most countries you are allowed to enter ENTIRELY at the discretion of the border control agent. If they don't like the look of you, don't like your name, find something they think is suspicious, are in a bad mood or are being ridden by their boss, they can turn you around and put you on the next plane home, regardless of what bit of paper you're holding.

There are obvious exceptions for citizen and diplomats, but that's generally how it works.

hehetrthrthrjn··on If a robot is conscious, is it OK to turn it off?
Yes, if, like the robot, you own that person. That seems unlikely though.
hehetrthrthrjn··on The self-driving car is a red herring
This article (willfully) mistakes Waymo's caution for allegedly intractable nature of the self-driving problem.
hehetrthrthrjn··on AMD to Acquire Xilinx
It may have been Xilinx not wanting to get into bed with Intel. Xilinx may have wanted a degree of technical independence or freedom to carry out their own strategy that was not forthcoming from Intel.
hehetrthrthrjn··on AMD to Acquire Xilinx
This is a smart move, reflecting Intel's own, with an eye to the datacenter where the FPGA is seen as having a bright future.
hehetrthrthrjn··on Tesla Starts Full Self-Driving Beta Rollout
"Beta" self-driving software sounds like an incredibly bad idea. The notion that they are rolling it out to "expert and careful drivers" makes no sense.

Is there a tap-through EULA where Tesla disclaims your potential death?

hehetrthrthrjn··on AWS forked my project and launched it as its own service
I have no problem with that, but don't pretend that someone is abusing your license when you didn't stipulate.

If fact someone should come up with a well written licence that adds conditions when the licensee revenue is over a certain (large) amount, like say royalties. Everyone should be happy with that.

hehetrthrthrjn··on SQLite now allows multiple recursive SELECT statements in a single recursive CTE
If I'm not mistaken, this brings SQLite up to parity with Datalog.
hehetrthrthrjn··on The next US president won’t be great for H-1B visas
Clearly wage discriminants needs to be within job types otherwise they're meaningless. I'm sure any honest implementation would be on that basis.
hehetrthrthrjn··on AWS forked my project and launched it as its own service
"free software for me but not for thee"
hehetrthrthrjn··on Nine in ten adults think buying latest smartphone is waste of money
I think most people don't upgrade their phone until something breaks, maybe that's what is driving cycle length. That underlines the marketing genius of non-user replaceable batteries, which are usually the first thing to go.
hehetrthrthrjn··on Nine in ten adults think buying latest smartphone is waste of money
My phones last about 5 years and my last phone, the Moto G6 Plus, cost about $200.

They're not very useful computers in relative terms, beyond being very portable, and there is a lack of compelling new features in new phones.

Right now there is the spec grind which moves some people to upgrade, but most people won't see a benefit. I suspect phones are more important as a fashion accessory or status symbol at this point.

hehetrthrthrjn··on The next US president won’t be great for H-1B visas
How is wage-based visa allocation denying entry-level applicant visas a bad thing? If there are entry level roles to be filled they should be filled locally since they're low skill/experience by definition.

If you're going to develop talent you should develop local talent. The deal is that you give foreigners the opportunity because they offer valuable skills.

hehetrthrthrjn··on A Digital Euro
There are only two types of euros: notes that are physical evidence of said money, and deposits in banks. You can transact by exchanging notes or by instructing your bank to perform a transfer. Both have limitations with the second being that you have to involve banks in the transaction and have a bank account, etc.

Digital currency has all the benefits of both methods with none of the drawbacks. No bank account required, no banks required (other than the ECB, but they are also required for bank notes), instant exchange, privacy, in person or distant transactions, etc.

hehetrthrthrjn··on A Digital Euro
Sounds like a great idea. This is an "offline" digital payment method, essentially the digital equivalent of a bank note that can be exchanged with others without reference to a central repository.

Its implementation is left as an exercise for the reader...

hehetrthrthrjn··on Euro English
You don't need to worry. There is no such thing as a generic native speaker of English, since one can only learn a local form natively. Every speaker of English is offending some native speaker of English somewhere.

Generally speaking, native speakers need to get over themselves. English has become the global language (which no-one got to vote on) so native speakers should accept local forms and foreign influences and invasions, especially since English has been doing that since its inception.

hehetrthrthrjn··on Euro English
What do you mean by "native English speakers"? Native speakers of US English and British English rountinley have difficulty communicating.

English has become the global language, so there will always be local forms. You can't elevate one form above all others and claim it's the one true English. British English is not special in that respect, it's just a historical form.

hehetrthrthrjn··on Euro English
Both of those examples are just local idiomatic usages, there's nothing incorrect about them. You get those wherever English is spoken, including variations within countries and cities.
hehetrthrthrjn··on Euro English
The survival of any language is only dependent on having a population that speaks it. In that sense Euro English potentially has a larger speakership than US or British English.

The reason Euro English exists is because it's more convenient or natural for Europeans to speak it, so it lives on. English is a promiscuous language, so it's likely that unusual ("incorrect") forms will one day become a part of standard usage, given Europe's cultural and economic influence.

hehetrthrthrjn··on Modi government to set up app store alternative to Google Play, Apple App Store
OMG the horror of having a billion other choices when you're arbitrarily banned from one.
hehetrthrthrjn··on NASA Benefits to US Economy in 2019. $64.3 billion. 312,000 jobs
This is fine, but it ignores the opportunity cost of spending that money.
hehetrthrthrjn··on Global capital is the tail that wags the U.S. economic dog
The "debt show-downs" aka political theater.
hehetrthrthrjn··on Programming language notation is a barrier to entry
The comments actually hit on the real solution to notation issues: it should be executable.

It might require a library or file of accompanying "assumptions" that enables a concise "display" notation that appears in the text, but it would allow anyone to examine and understand what was being specified by having a common, concrete base of reference and the ability to query and examine it from whatever angle works for the reader.

hehetrthrthrjn··on Catalina VM
It's argument that has not been given much careful thought. Hardware bought today will likely become obsolete itself before Apple obsoletes it.

Apple will likely be supporting Intel hardware with updates for at least 5 years and probably much longer. Application devs will likely provide even longer support, say 10 years plus.

There is a massive installed base of Intel machines and ARM is a downgrade for anyone who values compatibility (such as Bootcamp, VMs, etc) so there will not be a rush to the new platform like previous transitions.

Most of the attraction of ARM hardware will be in laptops because of improved power efficiency. People with desktops will have much less incentive to upgrade early, or at all.

hehetrthrthrjn··on Boeing cuts flight training pilots, will outsource jobs overseas
It's right there on the safety card, if they care to look.

I guess it's too late by then.

hehetrthrthrjn··on W64devkit – Portable C and C++ Development Kit for x64 Windows
See https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/win32

It's a work in progress, but will probably yield something that can be processed into various useful formats.
