haywirez··on Ask HN: What are you working on (September 2024)?
I love this and I remember your amazing work on wavepot from back in the day <3 It was what got me excited about audio dev, now pursuing a similar quest.
haywirez··on Dear Europe, please wake up
Why is this flagged? The real talk ratio in the article is notably high.
haywirez··on Stable Audio: Fast Timing-Conditioned Latent Audio Diffusion
Are you sure the demo sound files are correct on the website? Couldn't appreciate any glaringly obvious differences between the original and denoised with studio grade headphones here. Or, the originals aren't noisy enough.
haywirez··on Kysely: TypeScript SQL Query Builder
Objection is an incredible SQL ORM library from the same author, I learned a lot of concepts from it over the years.
haywirez··on The creator economy: the top 1% and everyone else
As hard data from the Twitch leak proves, it's even more tilted — only 0.117% make minimum-wage income levels[0].

haywirez··on Just how complicated could it be to register a German company?
Registering already seems daunting but it's nothing compared to what comes after - payroll, health insurers, taxes, dealing with import duties, various registrations, fax, constant cold sweat from missing important snail mail. The admin ordeal intensifies with unexpected twists and turns. Ask me in a few years if it was worth it.
haywirez··on The Curse of the Hasselblad XPan
What an incredible article, conveying the excitement and passion for a niche subject so well and clearly even for the uninitiated. It's so rare these days. Much to learn about writing here too.
haywirez··on How to build a low-tech website? (2018)
Would be fascinating to see a similar tips & tricks breakdown for minimum-viable 3D content.
haywirez··on Migrating to Next.js from Create React App
Had several requests lately for the exact opposite pattern — migrating bloated Next.js projects to vanilla React SPAs.

Razzle[0] seems like a workable alternative if you need static exports for optimizations such as link unfurling. Still looking for something that isn't based on Webpack (ideally esbuild or swc)— would appreciate links in replies.

haywirez··on Windows Terminal Quake Mode
Been waiting for this for ages, I hope it comes fast!
haywirez··on AWS bill capping feature request thread still unanswered after 10 years
This finally answers my bafflement over why my requests for a transfer cap feature have been ignored by all thin-second-layer providers of the Vercel etc. type...
haywirez··on Libgen Storage Decentralization on IPFS
Took a good 10 seconds until the video started playing. Anything over a second is too long in terms of UX expectations.
haywirez··on Your single-page app is now a polyfill
You can send a Clear-Site-Data header[1] for forcing a full refresh.

haywirez··on Split Keyboard for Professionals
I've been looking for a "blank" mechanical keyboard with cherry mx silent red switches — is it possible to add those to the options?
haywirez··on What Is a Minimally Good Life?
> Pregnant women, for instance, need more food than those who aren’t pregnant.

Only 200kCal a day — less than half of a Snickers.

haywirez··on Actix Web 3.0
I've just started to rewrite my NodeJS-based prototype API using Actix.
haywirez··on Fuck You Startup World (2016)
In September 2020, somehow this all feels so dated and irrelevant, including talking about it here on Hacker News. The whole culture is past its zenith, ready to be processed and filed away.

haywirez··on Del.icio.us
Thanks! It works through DNS — you point your domain’s nameservers to Songsling, then it manages all the other necessary records automatically behind the scenes. Basically it points the domain at the generated site. It’s still early, rough around the edges, but slowly getting there. The new audio engine that’s in the works is on a whole another level, focusing mostly on that at the moment.
haywirez··on Del.icio.us
What a hero — love how the story of Pinboard stacks up against the long-term unsustainability of VC-funded and overhyped startups. Quote from the 2011 article[0]:

"My dream is to keep this a one-person project," says Ceglowski. "I am competing against billionaires like the YouTube guys running Delicious and I can hold my own. The tools I use have gotten so good and they are the same ones that Yahoo and Google use."

I hope to do the same one day with Soundcloud!

haywirez··on Computational Music Synthesis
Thank you, the chapter on resampling is very helpful for me right now as I’m implementing some of these approaches.
haywirez··on Carving out a niche as a small artist on Spotify
Note that this is all applies only to easy listening music suitable for the background (I checked the author's playlist at the end). Not something emotionally intense or overly energetic that demands your full attention. Spotify is optimizing for muzak, and artists who thrive in this ecosystem are muzak.

I could (and soon will) go deeper to prove my point, but Liz Pelly already did a lion-hearted job covering the problems with streaming platforms and Spotify specifically — they have a catastrophic effect on music.[1]

Spotify is the No. 1 enemy of music culture and artistic expression.

haywirez··on A guide to writing a DNS Server from scratch in Rust
Is there a similar guide out there for Go? Would be great to compare.
haywirez··on The Kawaiization of Product Design
> “this is not for adults”

That’s a critical feature.

haywirez··on A first look at Unreal Engine 5
You have it right now in the browser Web Audio API, for free[1]

haywirez··on Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage Now Has S3 Compatible APIs
I'm seeing horrible TTFB from Europe. Most files are fast but sometimes a request is stuck for 10s or more...
haywirez··on Backblaze B2 Cloud Storage Now Has S3 Compatible APIs
That's awesome, but I really want to see lightning fast response times and TTFB... Second pain point is the number of retries needed for uploading a large batch of small files. Those are the main reasons I'm still considering migrating away. I really wish I shouldn't as otherwise I love the pricing and the philosophy.

Edit: also think DigitalOcean Spaces and B2 might be better off merging together, or Spaces being a whitelabel B2 in disguise (both are part of BWA).

haywirez··on Proposed bounty for adding virtual camera / microphone support natively to OBS
Blackhole[1] is a better, newer and free solution for these kinds of internal OSX audio routing issues.
