hawk_··on The odd appeal of absurdly long YouTube videos
Is it just the video that's generated or even the music? I think the music as well but wanted to double check.
hawk_··on Meta AI Unleashes Megabyte, a Scalable Model Architecture
> For the record Kim Kardashian passed the bar;

While I know the wider point you're trying to make, Kim Kardashian is a very smart business person. She may just not fit your narrow definition of "intelligent".

hawk_··on Nginx 1.25.0: experimental HTTP/3 support
because they sell Plus.
hawk_··on Io uring
IOCP is syscall free only on one side i.e. completion. io_uring can be syscall free on submission side as well.
hawk_··on Investigating the impact of HTTP3 on network latency for search
Is this another way to say put a regional proxy or do you mean something more?
hawk_··on UK’s GDPR replacement could wipe out oversight of live facial recognition
Yes, very well explained in Yes Minister https://youtu.be/37iHSwA1SwE
hawk_··on Deep sleep may be the best defense against Alzheimer’s
Since you are in the field, would you give some names of such labs in the EU? The quality of results when searching for "European genetics laboratory" aren't great.
hawk_··on DuckDB 0.8
> results lose their original casing and returned all lowercased.

That's a shame. Have you reported this bug on their repo?

hawk_··on First Rust code in the Windows 11 kernel
Good question. Specifically GUI code tends to have many cycles in object graphs. Do idioms already exist in Rust to deal with advanced cases of that?
hawk_··on I've mostly stopped reading technical mailing lists
> Yet the first person who reads it might see holes in it that make it a waste of time to read. So instead, have it go to a couple people first.

Sounds like upvote/downvote in a subreddit...?

hawk_··on The Life and Science of Richard Feynman (1992)
Makes me wonder how big a role did the "Jew Quota" or similar discriminatory practices played in holding back the likes of Columbia. Also whether we will see a similar effect over next 50 years with affirmative vs non-affirmative schools.
hawk_··on Is sequential IO dead in the era of the NVMe drive?
> There are different techniques for implementing OP (Over provisioning) yourself. You can simply leave a portion of the drive unpartitioned

This doesn't sound right. Does this mean that the drive decides to arbitrarily move blocks between your partition and unpartioned spaces to manage GC?

hawk_··on Red Hat cutting hundreds of jobs, CEO says in letter to employees
Isn't (b) forcing 5 year amortization? Which I believe doesn't affect large long running steady businesses. It's mostly about cashflow.
hawk_··on Horrible Code, Clean Performance
> Yeah, absent an effort to speed up a code base, it will tend to get slower, unless the team has a culture of performance

My experience with JVM over the last few years says otherwise. Most teams I have come across try too hard to achieve "performance" where very simple idiomatic code would have sufficed. Idiomatic code improves in performance every release. Instead they picked up some dogmas based on JVMs of the past and their "peformance culture" is a farce.

hawk_··on On a great interview question
> I hate this industry so much.

and you suggest providing free labour for an entire year to some companies. No wonder GP hates this industry.

>For the next year try contributing to open source projects that you like and that have companies behind them.

If they are custodians and not managing your portfolio, that might even be illegal.
hawk_··on Banks as collateral damage in a class war
(Wannabe) Despots attack all institutions. That by itself doesn't mean anything.
hawk_··on Sucralose is a negative modulator of T cell-mediated responses in mice
The fruits we eat are nothing like what our non human primate ancestors ate. Fruits have become significantly sweeter within my lifetime. What goes for fruit now is artificially selecred fruit candy.
hawk_··on Prostate cancer could be treated by destroying tumors with electric currents
Before anyone thinks of increasing p53 in human bodies to prevent cancer keep in mind that it can cause premature aging.
hawk_··on Prostate cancer could be treated by destroying tumors with electric currents
Early 40s sounds kind of young to have it. How did you/they find out that you had it? Anyway good that it worked out well for you.
hawk_··on After seven years of Brexit talks, Europe has emerged as the clear winner
A body got its arm severed. Yes the body will do better than the severed arm but not exactly a "clear winner".
hawk_··on Fake sugars sneak into foods and disrupt metabolic health
Not where I live (some EU member), not so obvious. For example all Fanta has some artificial sweetener. Diet fanta has no sugar at all.
hawk_··on Fake sugars sneak into foods and disrupt metabolic health
There's misguided government policies leading to weird consequences where I am. Other than Coca Cola original, it's impossible to find any carbonated drink that doesn't have artificial sweeteners mixed in. Apparently sugar above some threshold triggers tax but there are no restrictions on artificial sweeteners. This is probably not going to end well.

Interesting. Where are these domain specific databases used? And do those industries suffer from NIH (not invented here)?
hawk_··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
That makes me wonder if there's a system that can recycle the heat lost in drain (hot water from the shower that just got drained).
hawk_··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
Acid loosens the enamel, so careful with anything like good rinsing or brushing right after consuming acidic items. Just drink some water (optional light rinse) and wait around 30 minutes to brush.

* Disclaimer: I am not a dentist, you should find a good one and talk to them for real advice.

hawk_··on Ask HN: Something you’ve done your whole life that you realized is wrong?
Our diet is nothing like what our teeth evolved for. For example for most people, cutting down the amount of sugars (down to levels similar to our prehistoric ancestors) they consume can go a long way in protecting dental health (and general health for that matter)
