hashberry··on Mamdani to kill the NYC AI chatbot caught telling businesses to break the law
> The Office of Technology and Innovation spent nearly $600,000 to build out the foundations of the MyCity chatbot, which will be used for future chatbot offerings on MyCity. [0]

This was experimental tech... while I admire cities attempting to implement AI, it seems they did not spend enough tax dollars on it!

hashberry··on The Pornography Paradox
My name is hashberry, and I am a porn addict. Do not follow my path into the erotic abyss, especially with a chemsex stack of stimulants + cannabis + alcohol.

I recently discovered Stable Diffusion. I've always loved photos of beautiful women, but now porn is 100% customizable. Every fantasy can now have a realistic lifelike visual, even of people you know.

This article subheading reads: "Reformers fear that ever more outré sites are warping users’ desires. But transgression has always been part of the appeal."

Ah, yes, "transgression." In this erotic hell, you'll find your mothers, your daughters, you sisters. You'll find "futa" transsexuals, bukkake cumshots, and rape-like scenes. This nonstop pornography has no limit because degeneracy has no limit.

hashberry··on My out-of-body experience in a sensory deprivation tank
Same. I'm convinced OBEs are a form of dreaming, especially when comparing the techniques used for initiating wake-back-to-bed lucid dreaming (relaxing the body & mind, feeling vibrations, being amazed how "real" it is, etc).
hashberry··on Ask HN: Not liking my first dev job. Any tips?
lol welcome to capitalism 101. you are a servant paid to do work no one else wants to do. your feeling is called alienation.

> I love to start with that blank canvas and through sheer will and dexterity forming it into something beautiful.

I have built many beautiful tools for clients, but there is extreme alienation when no one uses it, when you find out it's just a marketing gimmick.

love/passion is for projects you own.

hashberry··on How A.I. Conquered Poker
I like your taxonomy. But just to clarify: is the cruise control on my car "artificial intelligence?" Because a lot of dumb 15-year-old teenagers don't know they have to increase power while going up a hill, while my cruise control algorithm does.
hashberry··on How A.I. Conquered Poker
> he opened a computer program called PioSOLVER, one of a handful of artificial-intelligence-based tools

So I checked out this tool, and the team describes themselves as "programmers interested in algorithms"[0] ... what is the difference between A.I. and algorithms?

hashberry··on Slowing Down, Yes, but to What?
The NYTimes regularly publishes articles such as "179 Reasons You Probably Don’t Need to Panic About Inflation"[0] with highlights such as:

> most products are actually seeing very modest inflation.

> the inflationary surge might be “transitory,” or fade quickly on its own.

> As we move past the worst of the Covid-19 crisis, such base effects will fade.

> For now, inflation is well contained

hashberry··on Ask HN: Feeling guilty for doing the bare minimum at work
Yeah, the guilty feeling sucks, I also had a devops job where I worked 2-3 hours a day. I finally found a more demanding job that required 4-6 hours of work per day. Being remote also helped instead of trying to keep up appearances in the office.
hashberry··on How Philosophers Think
> Quantum Thinking, which is holding multiple contradictory ideas in your head at the same time. By oscillating between radical extremes, you put ideas at war with each other in the name of truth. By doing so, you stretch each idea to its logical conclusion.

Isn't this the 19th century Hegelian dialectic, not a quantum-whatchamacallit?

hashberry··on Noted A.I. Ethicist Timnit Gebru Let Go from Google Following Email Exchange
I am college-educated and live in a diverse urban city, yet when I saw Gebru's Medium photo I did not realize she was a Black woman. If a human has trouble with facial recognition, then A.I. definitely needs a lot more help and guidance.
hashberry··on Ask HN: What is the ideal developer experience in 2020?
I found it useful to match dev OS with prod OS... for example, if prod is running Debian-based distro, write code in Debian-based distro. Also encountered a lot of horror stories upgrading macOS to Catalina... that is lost productivity.
hashberry··on What is the most dangerous drug? (2019)
As someone who experimented with numerous drugs in college, I always remember being buzzed or drunk when the second drug was introduced. Alcohol lowers inhibitions and puts one in a "party" mode. It's also everywhere, making it easy to consume more than one drink. Plus it's fun to "stack" with other drugs like stimulants, making intoxication more dangerous. Alcohol is THE gateway drug.
hashberry··on Most tech content is bullshit
And social media (including LinkedIn). There are many tech firms who hire marketers to write tech content for other marketers and potential clients as an advertising and brand-building strategy.
hashberry··on Mindset Health (YC S19) raises $1.1M to develop hypnosis apps
I will gladly hand over my money for an app that will hypnotize me to stop procrastinating and make me like my job.
hashberry··on Bland God: Notes on Mark Zuckerberg (2018)
> Easier to conceive of Mark Zuckerberg as a machine.

The memes of Zuckerberg as Data from Star Trek always amuse me.[0] Sure, it's teasing, but Data is a likable character! Data doesn't strive to be superior but to be more human, even if this means being analytical instead of emotional.

Mark Zuckerberg would be far more interesting if he were "evil"--if he tried to create new values, if he tried to replace God. But he isn't even an atheist anymore and is embracing religion and Judaism[1].

And then of course we must separate the man from the corporation: Facebook is a public company has an obligation to its shareholders to make money. Facebook stopped being about Zuckerberg a long time ago... it is now about surveillance capitalism.

hashberry··on Google sued for secretly amassing vast trove of user data
I have a personal gmail and a work gmail (G Suite), each using my full name, but both run in separate browsers using the same IP address. I always wonder if Google keeps a "master record" of people and all their associations, if not for security or to work with law enforcement.
hashberry··on Mark Zuckerberg Believes Only in Mark Zuckerberg
The premise of "power" and "domination" seems correct. Though there are other things he believes in:

- Mark Zuckerberg believes/believed in China. He read Chinese president Xi Jinping’s latest book and recommends it to his employees, learned Chinese, and asked president Xi for a baby name suggestion. [0]

- Mark Zuckerberg believes in Judaism. He has grown “more religious” after becoming a father and as a result of the “challenges we’ve been through as a company.” [1]

- Mark Zuckerberg believes in Sheryl Sandberg, his Chief Operating Officer since 2008. Author Shoshana Zuboff called Sandberg "the Typhoid Mary of surveillance capitalism." [2]

hashberry··on S&P 500 triggers 15-minute trading halt for the second time this week
The market has been overvalued and manipulated for years. Even Apple took out billions in loans for stock buybacks.[0] Boeing took out $43 billion in loans for stock buybacks[1] instead of investing in planes, QA and employees. Everyone knew this was a stock bubble caused by record low interest rates. COVID-19 is the pin that woke everyone up.

hashberry··on A Text Renaissance
It's just about blogging and knowledge sharing tools. It's difficult to read for some because of its "postmodern" style, which is infamous for unorganized filler and amusing word salad. I cracked up about "extended universes escaped reality construction" and tools that "collapses high and low-level thinking into a single behavior."
hashberry··on A Text Renaissance
Here's a summary about this technological renaissance of knowledge sharing:

- Roam Research: note taking using bidirectional links: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v9s3pusI1JQ

- Substack: monetizing email newsletters

- Static websites: high-performance, low-cost blogs when compared to WordPress

- Threaded Twitter: aggregating and collecting long threaded tweets as writers are using Twitter as a micro-blogging platform

- Ebooks: better than printed books

- "Blogging is Dead, Long Live Blogging"

hashberry··on [dead]
haha, you got me, nice clickbait title & domain for GoRails $19/month service.
hashberry··on Tesla’s Stock Is Up 36% in Two Days. What’s Going On?
It's a short squeeze:

> But if a stock rises steadily above the price at which the short-sellers initially sold it, they are sitting on a loss. That loss — in theory — has no limits because a stock can keep rising. And if a stock zooms higher, as Tesla’s has, the short-sellers will usually have to rush to buy the shares to protect themselves against further losses. If enough investors do this, it pushes the stock price up even further, forcing even more buying by short-sellers. Other investors often join the buying, in the belief they can make quick and easy profits.

hashberry··on How to build apps pragmatically
And no ones builds webapps in plain PHP anymore... there are high-quality modern frameworks like Symfony or Laravel with dependency injection, unit tests, template engines, etc.
hashberry··on Mist Showers: Sustainable Decadence?
I admire the passion the author has for mist shower tech, but the "carbon footprint" is a tough argument, especially since we spend so much water "showering" our lawns/yards.[0] That "rain showers" faucet looks pretty slick and I think I might upgrade to that.

[0] Landscaping is the second largest component of water consumption in California at 9% of total use. https://priceonomics.com/california-lawn-watering-economics/

hashberry··on How to Steal a Billion
WeWork/Uber/Airbnb... it's interesting how WeWork is classified as tech IPO next to these (e.g. Softbank used its "technology fund" to invest in WeWork). How did this happen? Isn't it an obvious real estate company? Is it because WeWork appealed to tech startups and remote workers?
hashberry··on Ask HN: New Monitor: Ultrawide or 4K?
The priority depends on your usage of vertical space vs horizontal space. Ultrawide is great for spreadsheets, music/video/timeline editing, etc. For coding, ultrawide is nice for splitting your IDE into 3-4 sections, however there is more vertical scrolling vs 4K.
hashberry··on XML is almost always misused
> a simple test for determining if an XML schema is well designed: remove all tags and attributes from it ... If what you have left over does not make sense ... you shouldn't be using XML at all.

Magento 2 (acquired by Adobe for $1.68bn) uses XML to render its layouts. Here's some fun XML for the checkout page:

hashberry··on Adam Neumann will determine WeWork's fate
This is not much when considering Neuman took out a $500 million loan earlier this month.[0]

hashberry··on The Myth That Capitalism Saved the World
> So why do American thinkers keep pushing the tired, old, obviously by now false myth that capitalism equals progress?

Because capitalism requires productivity from its citizens, and the market organizes this labor in an efficient manner, which is why our grocery stores are always filled with food & toiletries.

American democracy is the result of the British Parliament's misuse of capitalism ("no taxation without representation"). Capitalism is not static and is always correcting and improving itself with the help of pro-capital governments, like women's suffrage and child labor protection laws.
