hashberry··on 'Hackers' at 20
"We emphasized the use of psychedelic colors that the world of hacking was a mind-expanding experience for the kids."

Awesome quote. Computers/programming/"hacking" were definitely a mind-expanding experience for me as a teen. While "grown ups" saw a boring beige box, the machine felt alive with limitless possibilities to me.

hashberry··on Apple Unveils the iPad Pro
And so it begins... the once innovative company is now playing catch up, losing a little bit of its sex appeal as it copies the bland competition.
hashberry··on No One to Rescue Me from My Drinking
I was thinking the same thing. It seems people are more forgiving of a woman's transgressions. For example, the bar manager who put her in a cab after four Manhattans. I'm trying to imagine a bar manager walking a drunk man out and putting him in a cab... unless this type of thing is common in New York?
hashberry··on To Stop Procrastinating, Start by Understanding the Emotions Involved
I am a remote worker and suffer from chronic procrastination. "Understanding emotions" is an oversimplified solution because many are addicted to procrastination. It's like asking an alcoholic to understand the emotions of why he drinks. I have procrastinated as a student and my entire career and have always gotten away with it. I've been rewarded with praise of my great work, higher paying positions, and bonuses. I find myself enjoying waiting until the last minute and then using stress to help me succeed. It is a vicious cycle. I want to stop procrastinating but at the same time I like doing it.
hashberry··on Happy 10th birthday to us
I think people have this viewpoint because Reddit's popularity exploded after Digg v4 (August 2010):

https://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=digg%2C%20reddit&cmp...

It could be that Digg "power users" moving to Reddit helped it gain even more traction.

hashberry··on How to hack into an email account, just by knowing your victim's mobile number
Never discount the threat of the human element in hacking.

Kevin Mitnick was a successful hacker due to his skills in social engineering.

Posters may discount this "hack"--but think about the policies and training--if any--your company has in place to prevent this type of social engineering.

hashberry··on Venture Capital's Next Venture? Women
Women as a venture? Part of venture capital is Risk Assessment:

Market Risks: very low, women & diversity add value and sets firm apart

Technical Risks: neutral, women are as capable as men

Operational Risks: very high, as Ellen Pao demonstrated

Financial Risks: high, lawsuits can be costly

hashberry··on Mark Zuckerberg, Let Me Pay for Facebook
I wouldn't pay for privacy, but I'd pay to access other people's private information. Go the LinkedIn route!
hashberry··on The Cult of Work You Never Meant to Join
I prefer a salary as a full-time remote developer. No one looking over my shoulder and checking to see if I'm at my desk. My cumulative hours do not matter--only the quality of my work and meeting deadlines. I've been working remotely for five years and work less than 30 hours per week.
hashberry··on How many hours do you work a day (developers)?
Yes, 4:30 is plenty. I am a remote salary employee at a consultancy firm and work less than that.

I've worked at three other web firms and always had to pad my "billable hours." A boss gives me a project with "x" amount of hours and I'm not going to say "well, I can do this in half the time," because they'll just give me more work with no additional pay.

If I were truly motivated I would start my own firm. But I don't like dealing with clients or writing functional specs; I only like to code.

hashberry··on Ask HN: Which book are you reading these days?
Mindfulness In Plain English. An excellent book for anyone who wants to approach meditation in a rational, secular manner.
hashberry··on Reddit CEO eliminates salary negotiations for new employees
If women are not good at doing something that men are (e.g. negotiating), then don't let men or women do it.

Is this feminism or sexism?

hashberry··on An IT Recruiter Habit That Causes Severe Misery
Only high-value people get sweet talked and seduced by recruiters, like when a company wants to steal a high-ranking, popular employee away from another company. Every run-of-the-mill PHP developer receives spam like this.
hashberry··on What happens when you find out a year of college costs $71,000
"As for Mirza, she is still determined to head to her dream school this fall."

So to answer the title's clickbait question, the answer to what happens is that they go to the school and pay the tuition and go into debt. Because it's a "dream school."

hashberry··on Ask HN: JavaScript developer – what do I need to know?
Yet many projects do use jQuery, so if you're in an interview you should be able to say you've built a jQuery plug-in.
hashberry··on Why English sucks as the language for international and scientific communication

hashberry··on Hacker School is now the Recurse Center

hashberry··on Link prefetching FAQ
This is great. Can stop hacky prefetching like hidden images or Ajax calls. Front-end optimization is easily overlooked, yet something that greatly influences the user's experience on a site.
hashberry··on Ask HN: What new skills are you learning?
Everyone should learn to lift weights. It'll improve physique, health, and quality of life as you grow older.

hashberry··on JSON in URLs
The argument is that JSON in URLs offers better abstraction.
hashberry··on JSON in URLs
JSON in URL: /log?%7B%22a%22:%22b%22,%22c%22:4%7D

You are debugging and need to quickly identify the values you are passing to the API. Better have a JSON parser handy.

hashberry··on Scientists have discovered a simple way to cook rice that cuts the calories
Here is the Abstract from the actual study:

Obesity is an emerging health crisis in many developing countries. To find food based solutions for obesity, rice resistant starch (RS) concentrations and novel ways to increase RS concentrations were studied. A total of 38 Sri Lankan rice varieties were tested; the RS concentrations ranged from 0.30 to 4.65%. The traditional rice varieties had significantly higher RS concentrations than old and improved varieties. Bg 305 had the least RS concentration out of all. However, applying different heating and cooling conditions with pure coconut oil showed RS concentrations increased by at least 10 times. The increase in RS content could be attributed to the increase in RS3 and RS5 types, suggesting potential to increase these types of RS in rice. This study results clearly show that rice, when cooked properly, could be a good low calorie food source for obesity reduction. In-vivo glycemic effects of RS studies are in progress.

hashberry··on Viking Code School
It is also my pet peeve to call a Web Developer a Software Engineer. It's rather antiquated. Being a full-stack webdev is about knowing how all the different pieces fit together.
hashberry··on If We’re in a Bubble, What Should an Entrepreneur Do?
I have been worrying about the economy being in a bubble for the past year. It stagnates you. It's best not to obsess over it. It's only a bubble if a crash occurs, and no one can predict that, only play the guessing game.
hashberry··on The User Is Drunk

hashberry··on The underground world of neuroenhancing drugs (2009)
Adderall and modafinil are still the drugs of choice for focus. Modafinil can easily be bought online and is a favorite to many for its pleasant clear buzz and long half-life (15 hours).
hashberry··on Programmer Passion (Slight Return)
There is an OkCupid question which asks, "what is more important in a relationship: passion or dedication?"

After 12 years as a web developer, the only true "programmer passion" I have felt were for my own side projects, ones I have complete creative control over. Everything else is just a job to get done. I will show up and be dedicated for the allocated hours. But don't expect me to fall in love.

hashberry··on The Science of Near-Death Experiences
I've read all of Robert Monroe's books on out-of-body experiences and I'm convinced OBEs are a dream-type state. Especially his later books when he discuses his conversations with other beings and trying to ignore sexual urges (erections are common in REM sleep).
