gxnxcxcx··on Publishing my first game using PICO-8
More like try watching a comedy where nobody cared about getting the room tone to blend things right, no foley and sound effects work was done, and there was no provision in the budget for fixing things in ADR. See if you make it through the first 10 minutes before feeling the full ticket price was a scam.

Some kind of immersion is a prerequisite to a worthwhile experience. Sound is a pretty cheap and effective feedback medium for player actions, it quickly helps to define and telegraph changes in environments and settings (¿is this a safe encounter or the prelude to a boss fight?) and is crucial in helping to keep engagement during non-playable segments (in the earlier days, sometimes even printing dialogue text to screen was accompanied by sound effects to avoid alienating the player).

gxnxcxcx··on iCloud Drive silently deletes your content
I've had my fair share of highlighting/annotating shenanigans with macOS built-in software and I've found Skim (free, BSD licensed) to be a highly competent replacement, with the only caveat that you have to remember to export the annotated PDFs if you want to be able to see your changes from any other application.

Anyone tired of Apple's contrast-killing orangey background and missing a true yellow color for their highlights should give it a try. (No affiliation, just glad it exists.)

gxnxcxcx··on iPhone 12 withdrawn from French market for non-compliance with EU regulation
The first modification to that 1978 document came 14 years later, done for the sole purpose of keeping it in compliance with the Maastricht Treaty. The line in the sand you are fervently defending was crossed a long time ago.

I have a keyboard shortcut assigned to uBlock Origin's element zapper and now everything has an X. No permanent rules made, and when overdone just reload page to try again.

gxnxcxcx··on iOS 17 has a bunch of great features–that no one will ever use

gxnxcxcx··on Enter Hatman: Exploring the World of Benadryl-Induced Delirium
Getting your character high is just a narrative vehicle to some tropey destination[1]. It is sometimes done in a deliberately exaggerated tongue-in-cheek manner ("This is how squares must think drugs are always like!") by the ones that know better, but oftentimes it must be just plain unawareness and/or disregard for realism.

The article deals with one of the specific kind of drugs[2] that "kind of" work that way.

To be fair, interacting with real people who are high while one is sober can get boring pretty fast. Maybe that makes accurate portrayal in fiction not worth it.

gxnxcxcx··on The top-selling game on Steam is a new 254-player FPS made by 4 people
I've been trying to follow up on this in other places than prontondb to add a clarification since the moment I noticed a more recent review reporting it still works.

It's still working because the game hasn't transitioned from the more lenient EAC to FACEIT yet. About the future of it I've only found a Steam discussion[1] confirming the change will still occur and a youtube pinned comment with a dev quote whose origin I can't find[2]:

"since BattleBit is not competitive as CSGO or R6 etc, the restrictions become overkill for the majority of our player base, because of this, we are still investigating something in between EAC and FACEIT Anti Cheat in terms of requirements"

It seems like it used to work in Linux until recently. Now it uses a stricter anti-cheat.

gxnxcxcx··on I am so sick of Web 2.0
> I think that era ended due to a combination of a bunch of factors, particularly the iPhone, which defined the model for the modern smartphone. The iPhone favored an infinite scroll of bite-sized bits of content meant to go viral and a lot of the mindshare that was building web 2.0 sites, switched over to building mobile apps.

Ahh, the transition from desktop computing to toilet computing.

gxnxcxcx··on ChatGPT: Mayor starts legal bid over false bribery claim
They spent so much time trying to give the machine a soul just to make sure it'd never had a chance against our soulless institutions!
gxnxcxcx··on I was laid off by kinder, gentler capitalism
Must be real good, too. Judging by HN comments one would think they successfully washed away the stench of their Backpage work.

They should be thankful they were coerced into sex work with tools of kinder, gentler capitalism.

gxnxcxcx··on Media companies that also sell personal data
So it follows that the most sensible political policies/processes that could stand a chance of keeping Sci-hub from burning down are also tied to policies/processes that could stand a chance of keeping the police from being mobilized as useful idiots at the behest of any corporation big enough (whatever those processes are).

It may very well be the case that law enforcement overreach and corruption is gnawing at the very pillars of civilization.

gxnxcxcx··on AdGuard publishes the first ad blocker built on Manifest V3
I agree. And a very small percentage of Chrome users turned Firefox users could still mean a significant increase in Firefox usage, which in an ideal world would allow Mozilla a much needed breather from their metrics-driven efforts to stop bleeding users.

I don't care if it is equal volume or a little taser zap when exceeding some threshold, but a sacrifice must be paid to the gods of annoyance in order to restore balance.

gxnxcxcx··on Mundane chores are all the rage in gaming
> You can put the task down for months on end without negative results because time is constrained to the game world. Or put another way, constant upkeep tasks and their results can be perfectly saved.

After a very brief taste of Elder Scrolls Online I realized I really, really dislike when game time rules seep too much into real life and start contaminating my schedule.

Nowadays I can't stand even the simplest habit-forming daily rewards loop of mobile games.

gxnxcxcx··on Free stuff makes us irrational
> Ultimately Free does give a sense of entitlement; people think they should get exactly what they imagine in their mind and by that point it's not something they might get, it's their property that you're denying.

gxnxcxcx··on Ask HN: How to get boring once again?
Please keep in mind that your current "I have to x" may have been manufactured (or at least partially influenced) by the same attention-grabbing machinery you now want to escape from, so I suggest you keep some healthy wiggle room to accommodate new insights on what may or may not be essential for you in the future.

gxnxcxcx··on Ask HN: What things has tech made worse in your life?
In a city plagued by a decades-long, top-down devotion to capture value from tourism at the expense of the quality of life for its own citizens, Airbnb democratized things so the average Joe can contribute to ruining things for permanent residents, too.
