gurumeditations··on How the World’s Richest Country Ran Out of Face Masks
And yet Republicans controlled the White House, Senate, House, and the Courts from 2016-2018 and only managed to pass a $1 trillion taxpayer-funded giveaway to the largest corporations and a few rule changes to make it easier to dump toxic waste into drinking water.
gurumeditations··on Ask HN: Have you been laid off?
That Politico article is about the travel ban involving Muslim countries, not China or any Asian country. Do you read your own sources?
gurumeditations··on Exponential Growth and Covid-19 [video]
Everybody who works any public-facing job will go to work with a “cold”, I guarantee it. I did. The alternative is losing said job. Welcome to America.
gurumeditations··on Dr Anthony Fauci barred from speaking publicly about coronavirus with o approval
I assumed this was a doctor working in China when I read the title. It’s actually the Trump administration.
gurumeditations··on Which of these Amazon Prime purchases are real?
Personally, any expensive electronics I buy in person, not from Amazon. Best Buy and the like are trustworthy.
gurumeditations··on Report to local authority in the UK if you see a kid using Tor, VMs, Linux etc.
Thanks, I didn’t know what Metasploit was before. An easy to use hacking tool sounds very interesting to me...
gurumeditations··on Climate Change Is Killing Alpine Skiing as We Know It
“Petulant child”
gurumeditations··on Amazon workers say they’re doing “back-breaking” work without paid time off
That depends on if you’re on the side of the capitalist or the side of labor. Capital holders would take that point of view but labor might say capital should make the work more reasonable and hire more labor to make up the difference.
gurumeditations··on The Real Class War
That’s ignorant. There was and still is for Republicans a very high cost for supporting romantic equality.
gurumeditations··on Something Changed at Tesla
First of all, this is typical Gawker-site blog spam. It has zero insight.

Second of all, while I’m sure you can find some tesla fans who will go for it, especially with a $100 refundable deposit, I think they just made a bad call. How they go from Model X/3/S to this, escapes me. I love flat car panels, but I don’t think anyone who isn’t already a tesla fan will go for it. It’s viscerally ugly. They got many fundamentals right. The problem is the look. Trucks are not utilitarian. They are SUVs with the roof removed to make it less useful so that men will be comfortable buying it. Utilitarianism is not a legitimate excuse for this design.

It looks like a bunch of Silicon Valley nerds designed a truck they’d want to drive. It definitely has that niche appeal, but certainly no mass-market appeal. Is Tesla’s long term strategy to stay in the high end? I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re doing this kind of niche appeal because the price of batteries has not come down far enough to make a cheap decent electric car yet.

gurumeditations··on Tesla Cybertruck
Regardless of its power, that is the ugliest car design I’ve ever seen. Seeing it in the stage in video after the renders on the website made it even worse. Nerds may think it’s cool, but I doubt you’ll catch many people riding around in it.
gurumeditations··on Apple’s iPhone Software Shakeup After Buggy iOS 13 Debut
Safari, at least on the iPad, is so incredibly buggy in iOS 13 that it’s practically unusable. Not to mention the ridiculous system where it opens new Safari windows, not tabs, and then doesn’t give me any option to close them. And when Safari bugs out, and I have to force close it, it loses every single one of the tabs I have open, and it didn’t do any of this garbage before iOS 13.
gurumeditations··on Apple Eyes 2022 Release for AR Headset, 2023 for Glasses
AR technology development is really just about turning the crank, and Apple is best at that nowadays.
gurumeditations··on The House Votes in Favor of Disastrous Copyright Bill
So EFF’s description is accurate.
gurumeditations··on The China Cultural Clash
The Chinese government is heavily intertwined in every single business of some size in China. They ultimately do Xi Jinping’s bidding.
gurumeditations··on The China Cultural Clash
If that were true, the US would treat Europe as even bigger an enemy than China.
gurumeditations··on Firefighting foam leaves toxic legacy in Californians’ drinking water
That’s like saying poisoning is good for people because the sicker people are, the more hospitals and doctors you’ll need. The money has to come from somewhere. There is no profit in cleaning up messes, just loss reduction. The money, trillions of dollars just for climate change alone, has to come from somewhere. If past generations had not been so greedy, that money would be in our pockets. Instead, it will be burned because we have to clean up the unfathomable messes older people have created.
gurumeditations··on Firefighting foam leaves toxic legacy in Californians’ drinking water
Our future has really been stolen from us. Decades of pollution from greed and decadence and excess, as Thunberg says “fantasies of eternal economic growth”, have totally destroyed our future (speaking as a young person). Climate change robs us of a stable world, robots rob us of our livelihoods, and decades of ‘economic growth’ have poisoned our bodies and minds from birth through polluted water, air, and food.

Everything is an ecosystem. You can’t have wild growth without paying for it, and the people of the past 75 years have stolen our bright futures from us and stuck us with the bill. Your comment reminded me of just how fucked up everything is. I think the 21st century will be consumed by the efforts to clean up the giant mess the 20th century left us. Goodbye economic growth. They stripmined the timeline and left us nothing.

gurumeditations··on The GM strike is really about the switch to electric cars
This is why people like Peter Thiel have compounds on island nations like New Zealand. Economists say we’re in the midst of a long and painful transition between the old manufacturing economy and... something. The question is, are we going to inch closer to an ideal socialist utopia where everyone has more or less everything because production is so cheap (like in Star Trek), or towards a capitalist dystopia where the Thiels of the world hoard everything in a progressively smaller elite fraction of the population.

I’d be very interested to see what China does. 1+ billion people. Do they leave them without jobs? Legally mandate manufacturing to include vast human employment? 100s of millions of people without a purpose will not end well. Just look at the Middle East. People will fight hardest when the stakes are so low. We’ve already got Trump in the US, BJ in the U.K. What will we get next as human labor becomes less and less necessary?

gurumeditations··on Troubles with Tesla's automated parking summon safety regulators
I’d argue the real problem is that Tesla puts this experimental buggy self-driving stuff out into the general public, knowing, because they’re not dumb, that ‘troubles’ are going to happen because of it. The big auto manufacturers don’t do this public beta testing with 2-ton behemoths because at their scale, the ‘troubles’ caused by that attitude Tesla has would be a national scandal with prison time.
gurumeditations··on The Saudis Are Lying About Their Oil Production?
Just like all these tech IPOs.
gurumeditations··on Sanders wants to replace credit reporting companies with public credit registry
Please keep Veritas/O’Keefe/political BS off of here. They’re well-known to be serial fraudsters (with his latest attempt consisting of trying to plant false rape allegations during the Kavanaugh confirmation affair).

gurumeditations··on Apollo Guidance Computer switching power supply works after 50 years
It is insane how many unknowable little variables need to go impossibly right on the journey to land on the moon and come back with that old technology.
gurumeditations··on Netflix CEO may have missed the real reason why US subscriber numbers plunged
That’s because the more radical writers are not really hired by the more establishment studios, so Netflix picks them up for cheap. My guess at least.
gurumeditations··on Grindr has faced a federal investigation, layoffs, mismanagement, and turmoil
For classification purposes, queer is accurate. It’s so we can avoid a thousand-letter acronym.
gurumeditations··on Grindr has faced a federal investigation, layoffs, mismanagement, and turmoil
Gay people are queer. Queer means everyone who is not straight.
gurumeditations··on Suicide Rates Among Adolescents and Young Adults in the United States, 2000-2017

gurumeditations··on Google’s Rivals Gear Up to Make Antitrust Case
James O’Keefe’s Project Veritas should never ever be trusted. They’ve been caught so many times now lying and spreading fake news that I have no doubt that you are intentionally spreading lies.
