gunfighthacksaw··on The first dating app made for developers
You don’t need an app, just

- be attractive

- be good at talking

- be respectful to women

- have a manic episode

- tell her how you feel, to her face

- tell her she’s attractive

Then once your mood stabilizes, if she didn’t report you to HR, you can probably escalate to cocktails.

Hyperpop remix! Hyperpop remix!!!
gunfighthacksaw··on Skyrim together: mod to play online
When I used to mod morrowind and oblivion, there was another big site which I forget the name of.

I think nexus bought them in the end which I did not enjoy because I always thought nexus was annoying wrt making an account etc.

Some amazing mods out there though. DarkNuts greater dwemer ruins was one of the greatest experiences I’ve had in a video game and should ideally have been incorporated as an extended TES 3 goty, licensing etc aside. Tamriel rebuilt was mind blowing too.

gunfighthacksaw··on Scunthorpe Sans, A font that censors bad language automatically
My cockerel was not amused. Nor was my pussy-cat.
gunfighthacksaw··on What do lawyers do?
The repeal of Roe v Wade was a gut punch for me, but I’ve known it was entirely possible for quite a long time. Plus some states have had trigger laws forever so that’s hardly surprising.

Yes, there will be instability, but it’s not the chaotic out-of-the-blue kind, unless you’re wilfully ignorant of the anti abortion movement, or extremely naive to the motivations of that bloc.

gunfighthacksaw··on Psilocybin microdosers demonstrate improvements in mood and mental health
Exercise and microdosing together, it’s pretty good but moods are intense. Do feel more positive about the future on the day to day (current geopolitical situation notwithstanding)
gunfighthacksaw··on The popularity of country music in rural sub Saharan Africa
Alt country is a thing. Cannot wait to hate on the inevitable mashup of country and hyperpop.
gunfighthacksaw··on Ask HN: How do you future-proof yourself?
If you know the future, play the lottery, or even better, form a startup :)

Otherwise, it’s a similar problem to being on eg the cutting edge of music. You either consume everything you can until you can make judgements on what will stick or not, or you create things yourself and try your hardest to make them the next thing.

Luckily, in our industry, you can also:

- know the fundamentals of math/science/technology: there is never truly anything new, there are always rehashes of something else

- be smart enough to absorb radical new theories: self explanatory, better learners can get a grasp of the content more effectively

- socially positioned enough to delegate what you don’t understand: if formally verified quantum blockchain on tensor cores (or whatever) doesn’t resonate with you, but you think it could be useful later, get a younger/brighter person to do what you won’t or can’t. You might reap major rewards from having a protege in the space, and if you don’t, then you helped the next gen learn something new, so feel good about that.

gunfighthacksaw··on The SQLite Code of Ethics
> A religious person who opposes abortion is not a fascist.

I’d call them a theocrat, but lets not forget the close ties between fascism and the church/new political-religious movements in Germany and Italy.

> An athlete who opposes trans womens' rights to compete in womens' competitions is not a fascist.

This one is nuanced because transgender folks being allowed to exist openly is still fairly recent, and openly in sports is more novel still. There are fascists in that camp for sure, but also a lot of reasoned debate needed to work out the cultural niche for trans people in this area. Unfortunately the left will seek to stop any debate, and fascists will poison the debate until trans people are bludgeoned into silence once more.

gunfighthacksaw··on The SQLite Code of Ethics
> They don't call themselves that, they don't organise under that label

Why would they? Much of our current mythology is based around slaughtering fascists in WW2. Why would anyone identify with that?

> their views aren't particularly similar to historical fascism

Hence the appellation of neofascism. There is a direct thread of political genealogy from the alt-right to the OG fascists, through the European Nouvelle Droite (inspired by Mussolini) and including figures like Steve Bannon who used to push the British BNP: a legitimately neofascist party. He also was buddy with Dugin for a while: a confirmed neofascist.

Read some fucking history and get stuck into the thought and theories of the far right if you want to play this game son.

> it's a serious threat!

Finally, we can agree! Look at the escalating far right violence in the US and Canada, and the erosion of the open society in Europe, and the current actions of Russia and China.

gunfighthacksaw··on The SQLite Code of Ethics
I’m not talking about silencing people I disagree with in terms of opinion. I’m talking about fascists disagreeing that certain ethnic/sexual/gender groups should be alive or allowed to thrive, or have certain rights.

If you think holding views like that is OK, you walk, talk and quack like a fascist.

gunfighthacksaw··on The SQLite Code of Ethics
It would be extremely naive to think that fascism only happened in the 1920s-1940s.

Obviously, todays fascism looks nothing like that of the modern era, just as todays leftists are different.

But it’s back, poisoning our democracies and pushing the world into a new hell. Putin is a neofascist. I could tell you which Americans are fascists, but you all get touchy when anyone brings it up.

gunfighthacksaw··on Entropy: Why Life Always Seems to Get More Complicated
I like the concept of the chemical potential from statistical mechanics.

The thermal potential (also due to entropy) causes temperature to spread outwards, hot to cold. This can be seen by solving the heat equation.

The chemical potential is that if you have a bunch of “stuff” (particles molecules etc) in one place, they will tend to spread out in space to maximize the entropy.

There’s no force or impulse making it happen, it’s just that you are far more likely to observe a system with “stuff” spread out than concentrated.

That’s why I love entropy. It’s not a force or even something super tangible. It’s more like the interface between the physical world and the abstract world of probabilities. The realest abstraction of them all.

gunfighthacksaw··on Life is not short
I imagine my last day is going to be spent hooked up to a life support machine in a climate controlled environment as various close people trickle in to say farewell.

I’d prefer to spend the close of my 20s doing something else like raving on a warm beach with a bunch of people who don’t know me and won’t miss me tomorrow, and hopefully finding one or two fellow travellers who I can keep in touch with until my dying days :)

exploration vs exploitation

gunfighthacksaw··on Supreme Court Overturns Roe vs. Wade
I hate that even following supposed liberation we still feel we have the right to police vaginas and reproductive systems.

I also hate that the pro-bodily freedom Americans have spent 50 years ignoring the shaky constitutional ground upon which this fundamental right lies.

The right wing ghouls are ultimately responsible, but I also heap scorn on the Democrats who failed to solidify the right to abortion in law.

gunfighthacksaw··on Wearing flashy/status clothes makes people less likely to cooperate with you
My fashion tip if you’re a somewhat attractive 18-34 man: look at what unisex styles are fashionable among young women and try to recreate the look from the mens section.

You’ll have an outfit that looks sharp, and you can avoid a lot of the “$200 plain shirt with a logo” bullshit.

gunfighthacksaw··on As weed gets more potent, teens are getting sick
Bruh I can cop $99/oz and that lasts me for 2 months. If I wanted to be permafried, maybe 2-3 weeks.
gunfighthacksaw··on As weed gets more potent, teens are getting sick
Apologies to mods for low effort reply to low effort post but you obviously care enough to have posted and responded.
gunfighthacksaw··on As weed gets more potent, teens are getting sick
My friend who is a (really smart) SWE in Canada said that compared to his own country, he could live here on a fast food salary, smoke weed, make music and still have a better life than his home country.

We forget that a job where you get free food and a low wage for simple work is (historically speaking) extremely luxurious.

gunfighthacksaw··on The Return of Industrial Warfare
But that would undermine Russia’s security to invade neighbouring countries, install kleptocrats and subjugate the population! You can’t just have a unified bloc of prosperous, (mostly) democratic countries right there; how scandalous! /s
gunfighthacksaw··on Why Casanova Continues to Seduce Us
I wonder if the Italian Giacomo Casanova would be as seductive if he was an Englishman with the corresponding name Jacob Newhouse
gunfighthacksaw··on Sex is going out of fashion?
I’m the same. I’ve had a large volume of sex but only with 3 women. Obviously I have a libido, but it gets overridden often by “this person is awful and I don’t want to bang them” as well as good old social anxiety/the tism.

I think for the majority of guys, the rigmarole around getting hookups was always a delicate calculus involving tradeoffs in money and time, for an uncertain payoff: a good lay if you’re lucky and bragging rights.

Now the economy is tighter and society has made bragging about conquests a bit less acceptable, so I think our pattern of just having deep (and free) sex with a loving partner is much more appealing.

gunfighthacksaw··on How ice cream became the ultimate American comfort food (2021)
Also hearty food traditional to the culture(s) you exist in.

When I’m in the UK, bangers and mash. In Central Europe some cutlet and sauerkraut.

This is also because I ate it with my grandparents and they probably enjoyed it from the war when meat was scarce and it was hard to get food from other lands. Like you say, a simpler time.

gunfighthacksaw··on We will never have enough software developers (2020)
After 1 year of SWE, I realized my body was becoming frail and mushy relative to when I was slugging cast iron fittings in the warehouse. Took me about 2 weeks to put together a workout regime with built in progression.

One of the things I’m glad of is the flex time and working from home so I can crank out workouts whenever it suits me.

gunfighthacksaw··on Why software engineers like woodworking
Put a bunch of 20-30 somethings in a room. Preferably with at least one attractive representative from each mutually compatible gender.

Add a necessity for distraction free periods to build mental maps of software. Add a modern HR policy. Add an open floor plan to facilitate glances around.

Invent a device to turn sexual tension into electricity. Power the office for free!

gunfighthacksaw··on Out on the Town: Magnus Hirschfeld and Berlin’s Third Sex
To put the current transgender moral panic in perspective, the Nazis persecuted Hirschfeld in the 30s for doing with surgical technology what we can do with hormones and puberty blockers (and better surgery) today.
gunfighthacksaw··on OpenBSD folklore and share/misc/airport
The disappearance of staff makes sense.

I’d have thought integrated security would be far more secure since the baggage goes and stays behind the secure boundary until the conclusion of the trip vs being retrieved, checked in, retrieved, checked in, etc

gunfighthacksaw··on Absolute truths I unlearned as junior developer (2019)
I’ve been thinking of coding as management too.

Considering the senior GIS focused dev at my work: to do what he does, but in the 70s he’d be a VP of a division of analysts and mapping techs. In 2022: he’s a programmer/maintainer on a project.

The co-op ramping up on the same program? Back in the day she would be a senior analyst on the management track under the VP. In 2022: a junior coder we can assign tickets to, with senior dev not as a boss/superior but as a guide.

Computer programs automate business processes that would require large orgs and rigid hierarchies 50 years ago.

gunfighthacksaw··on Metrication timeline (2018)
I agree, though I am a big fan of metric too. Imperial is simply more ergonomic for the day to day. This also applies to other folk systems such as the Russian or Chinese, to avoid notions of Anglo-centrism or Euro-centrism.

If I want to drink until I’m buzzed, I’ll have 3 pints of beer, not 1.5L or (god forbid) 1500ml.

If I want to run a decent distance I’ll do 6 miles, not the gruelling sounding 10km.

If I want enough meat to make a stew, I’ll have 1 pound, not 500g or 0.5kg.

Try losing a 0 or a decimal point in base 12 as well.

gunfighthacksaw··on In defense of coding interviews
I am not a civil engineer, but I can imagine a situation where a wooden bridge could be used as a stopgap to pull off a more tricky construction.

Maybe not in the 21st century however, and I don’t think your analogy is perfect.

It might be more like wanting to hire an architect who is also great at civil eng. The skills definitely synergize and can help prune the architect’s search space of good designs, but such a candidate is probably just going to go for an engi job, and lean on their architecture skills there: for example an algo dev that can do mock-ups.
