Book publishing can sometimes be alternative, but what if your code is so intuitive and easy to understand that no one needs a book about it? Or what if you're a bad communicator and someone else writes a much better book?
I don't have stats, but my guess is that most people don't carpool. So traditionally we haven't done it at all.
Any chance we'll see an API? It would be cool to be able to use it as a micropay button on top of a microdonation button.
Also a nitpick, the implication that things like this

is obviously untrue. Flattr had the same functionality without bitcoin.It sounds like the algorithm has changed
As for the role of the algorithm, I think its just an extension of "garbage in, garbage out".
Stories like this are a nice reminder that every community is also a bubble.
Just because you get paid $100/hr doesnt mean you value your time at $100/hr. In fact in means that you value your time LESS than $100/hr (though not by how much).
You're asserting that not only a right decision exists, but that you are more aware of the right decision than the person actually involved.
