greenknight··on Intel plans spinoff of FPGA unit
> Their chips are second to none (or perhaps tied for first, depending on who you ask).

> For server marketshare, intel vastly dominates (80%?). For gaming marketshare, Intel still has 60-70% the marketshare.

Marketshare is one thing, but saying they are the best but the marketshare is 60-70% is a totally different metric.

Its saying oh Toyota has the best cars because they ship the most... but they cant be as good as a Lambo / Ferrari because they dont ship the most.

In terms of server cpus, if you are looking at raw performance per socket, intel is no where near amd -- https://www.phoronix.com/review/intel-xeon-platinum-8592/10 . This is based on Emerald Rapids / Bergamo.

In terms of gaming cpus, they definetly are neck and neck with performance.

But yes you are right, Intels chips arent something you would throw away in the trash. They are good chips. They need to stick around. Its just that you cant say marketshare makes them the best.

greenknight··on Blackmagic Camera for iPhone
So I work daily in resolve. I had a project come up at home, where i was like oh ill just use resolve as it has everything we need.

Within 2 minutes, I was running into features i needed to pay for. Within 20 minutes I had bought a home copy because of how integral it is to my workflow.

They get people in by being able to do the basics, but anything remotely complex, you pay for.

greenknight··on The world in which IPv6 was a good design (2017)
I was (by default) part of a ISP based NAT. I play counterstrike online, and my ping was 80ms... calling them up and getting it disabled, dropped it to 30ms.

being behind their NAT caused all sorts of issues that i didnt realise they were causing... stuff like UPnP didnt work right, opening ports wasnt working right... everything was all over the place.

greenknight··on Intel returns to profitability after two quarters of losses
Yep, i feel like i am just a bit skeptical. I would have just liked to see multiple chips out in the wild (from different companies outside of intel) using the intel fabs.
greenknight··on Intel returns to profitability after two quarters of losses
They have been talking about being a foundary for external use for a while, years... yet i have not heard of a single customer yet, just an announcement today that intel and ericsson have a partnership.

It feels like yes they want to become a external foundary, but they just havent fully committed to that task yet.

greenknight··on Bottles – Easily run Windows software on Linux
What if they didnt know about codeweavers using the name? Wine goes into bottles (in the real world)... its a play on words.
greenknight··on OpenAI Employee: GPT-4 has been static since March
My understanding, is that ChatGPT... has a prompt that goes before your question (and previous answers) that set up the stage for how it should respond. It could be that the safeguards they have put in place, sit in this prefix prompt state... rather than GPT4... and that you would get the normal answers via the api rather than via ChatGPT.
greenknight··on Intel Foundry Services and Arm announce collaboration on SoC design
I think the majority of what made the M1 lineup so successful, was that they were on TSMC's 5nm before anyone else, and had that exclusivity.

November 2020 the m1 mac mini was released... September 2022 was when Zen4 came along, the next CPU to use the same node. Nearly a full 2 years.

Cinebench scores... The M1 Ultra got 24189 multithreaded... not that impressive but its tdp is 60w... at 65w the 7950x (eco mode) scored 31308 in the same test, down from 38291 at full power usage (170w).

It will be interesting to see if apple pushes for another exclusivity deal with TSMC for 3nm.

greenknight··on Capabilities of GPT-4 on Medical Challenge Problems
What I want, is to be able to go into a place where i poop, pee, spit, and get my blood taken... and it analyses it on the fly, and based off a large dataset it can diagnose if further checks are needing to be taken.

I want to minimise how many people i see... just make it all automated (and on demand) and that would be great.

greenknight··on BlenderGPT: Use commands in English to control Blender with OpenAI's GPT-4
Imagine being able to sketch out the outline of what you are after, then say hey blender model it up. Thats what it will get to.

You have a beach, and you want a jetty, just grease pencil approximately where you want it and go Hey thats a jetty build it. and if its not quite right, generate me 50 different versions and ill pick the best.

I swear Pokemon Unite has 5 different currencies. Gems, Tickets, Coins, Fashion Tickets, Holowear tickets. But then there are other items / collector things which can be used to spend on other stuff, like energy.

Its super confusing and hard to explain, because it doesnt make sense!

greenknight··on AMD CEO: The Next Challenge Is Energy Efficiency
I think its also leaning into their new product MI300, which has 24 cpu cores with 8 compute dies. Both CPU and GPU (and memory) on a single package.

Conventional processing + AI together. Hybrid approaches.

greenknight··on AMD CEO: The Next Challenge Is Energy Efficiency
I agree that a lot of AMDs wins have come from TSMC. That being said, I feel like the biggest win for them over the past 5 years (well 6 now)... was moving to chiplets, which all started at Global Foundaries. Having the same chip, from the lowest end consumer chip all the way to the top end server chip means that they can spend less time and cost developing up processors for every segment, and they just bin the chips in terms of quality.

Intel is starting to make changes towards this structure but they haven't fully committed to it yet.

greenknight··on Apple Reportedly Planning to Limit iPhone 15 USB-C Port in Same Way as Lightning
doesnt their 'lightning to hdmi' adapter, really a hack with an arm chip with ram in there to transcode the output from the phone into a hdmi signal?
greenknight··on Today is the 10th year anniversary of Steam being officially out for Linux
I play Counterstrike GO, and it was the thing holding me back from abandoning windows.

I (use to) play daily so there was no point ever booting up into linux.

As soon as linux support came out, I started playing under it immediately, and quickly realised that there was no point booting up into windows anymore.

greenknight··on Dungeons and Dragons’ new license tightens its grip on competition
> I also find it interesting that WotC/Hasbro have been silent so far (both regarding releasing the official OGL 1.1 or making a statement about the leak to correct any factually incorrect statements).

Probably because they are trying to figure out damage control. this leak only happened on thursday.

I would expect a response during the week with them backpeddling a bit.

greenknight··on Meta Earning Results Q3 2022 [pdf]
Q2 report... June 30 was 4,450M

Q1 was 8,528

and 9 months ago it was 13,151

Now its 173.

Approximately 4,000 per quarter for the past 3 quarters..... Pretty crazy.

greenknight··on Apple M2 Pro to use new 3nm process
I would expect that Apple would push its goldenchild (iphone) onto the node first. Its a small chip which they can use as a pipecleaner, makign sure they can get the yields up and optimise the process before pushing a larger die onto the node.

They easily could have been allocating risk production on the iphone for the past couple of months, ready for the launch. Apple being like yes we will take lower yields for less cost.

I do not expect any company to announce production 3N product, until apple has had one out for atleast 6-12 months. Look how long it took the rest of the industry to move to 5N. I swear part of that reason was an exclusivity agreement with Apple, and it massively paid off for their CPUs. Having a node advantage is always massive in terms of price / performance / power matrix.

> That we couldn’t - for the first time ever - open project files from a previous version into the new version

They put the time and effort at the time to allow importing of iMovie Projects though... Just that was a massive slap in the face of all professionals.

greenknight··on Will Intel's AXG division survive Pat Gelsinger’s axe?
Depends... sometimes its built specifically to kernels.

One common instance is, blender's Cycles renderer. Every time there is a new NVIDIA GPU. It needs to be recompiled to support it. Sometimes that also requires a new CUDA version to be able to do it. CUDA versions over the years have deprecated different operations and what not.

greenknight··on Ask HN: Why has quality of YouTube reduced drastically?

greenknight··on Is JPEG 2000 a preservation risk? (2013)
Fun fact, whenever you go to the movies, films (that are projected digitally) are encoding in JPEG2000 (wrapped in a MXF in XYZ Colourspace).

We also use it for our 3D renders for archviz, and is supported in our editing applications aswell... lower filesize compared to PNG, and better quality compared to JPG, and also supports alphas.

greenknight··on A first for Canada: New type of nuclear plant opening by 2028
Having direct involvement in the wind industry... most plan -> completion developments take 5-10 years. heck even one from 2013 still hasnt had ground broken.

The main reason? NIMBYs. Loads of people go out to the countryside to retire. imagine what these retires would do if their picturesque landscape is now comprised of windfarms? and they dont have anything else to do to fill up their day?

greenknight··on Apple Discontinues macOS Server
I think a lot of people dont realise how big of a mistake Shake was.

Apple acquired Shake from Nothing Real in 2002. by 2006, it was essentially dead. This was a huge problem with the visual effects industry as it was the standard for compositing works and nothing was comparable. quickly there was a scramble for alternatives to up their game, two major players were Fusion and Nuke, with Nuke evenutally winning out.

greenknight··on Netflix Officially Adding Commercials
My old housemate use to complain when I switched from watching a movie on free-to-air tv, to a streaming service. Mainly because he liked the ad breaks as they allowed him to get snacks / water / toilet break etc.etc. I would say when you want something i will pause, but he wouldnt say its the same.
greenknight··on “I believe CGI is getting worse even as the tech advances.”
This is the thing, if they screw it up on set with the lighting, its the 'CGI' peoples fault that it looks bad.

Going on from this, I am sure for every shot that looks 'CG', that there are atleast 100 amazing VFX shots, which are seamless and hidden from people. But these are never picked up or discussed, because people dont realise they are CG.

greenknight··on US Senate votes unanimously to make daylight savings time permanent
Following on from this, Queensland is usually considered part of the East Coast of Australia. Which is 30 minutes ahead of South Australia (normally).

Then when the switch over summer, queensland doesnt switch whilst the rest of the east coast (nsw and vic) and south australia switches. Which results in queensland being 'behind' in time compared to SA, even though very far east on the globe (1300km east, 1600km away)
