greenknight··on OpenAI Jalapeño: Better than Nvidia Blackwell
Nope. But we are hitting some pretty impressive levels with 128B models.

The other thing is, a lot of the time, model performance is improved with more 'thinking' time.

The thinking time is just more tokens... but instead of say 1000 tokens or 10,000 tokens worth of thinking its 1,000,000... how does that improve model performance? Could a 128B model hit levels of GPT Sol?

greenknight··on Google fixed more Chrome bugs in June than over the past two years, thanks to AI
The Gemini (and Claude / Codex) that we have, is much different to their internal models / harnesses.....
greenknight··on Blender 5.2 LTS
> A monthly thing makes no sense; just letting hobbyists dabble until they are in a place to pay used to be a lot more normal. They ought to make the entry for paying a bit less heartburn-inducing, though.

Thats exactly what they do. They dont charge at all even if they do make loads of money.

greenknight··on Blender 5.2 LTS
The thing is, Cycles is fully open sourced... so there is no real secret behind it!
greenknight··on An OpenAI model has disproved a central conjecture in discrete geometry
I believe that the answer is yes it will happen... the question is when will that point will occur.

Right now, we are in a transition period... Models are improving, but they are not capable just yet to take over.

Where do you see it being in a years time? or 2? or 5?

greenknight··on PS3 Emulator Devs Politely Ask That People Stop Flooding It with AI PRs
Thats the thing, what if the codebases had CLAUDE.md / AGENTS.md files, which clearly dictated that

A) tests need to pass

B) anything you write needs tests

C) the code quality must adhere to these standards

etc.etc.... Helping the LLMs that people Vibe code with, produce better quality results.

By not having these in place, it means people who want to help out, cant. because htey dont understand whats going on.

adding stuff to these files, woudl allow developers to give guidelines / guardrails for developement using these agents.

Should the barrier of entry be someone who knows how to code? or should the barrier of entry be someone who is motivated to help with open-source software.

greenknight··on DeepSeek v4
The thing is, it doesnt need to beat 4.7. it just needs to do somewhat well against it.

This is free... as in you can download it, run it on your systems and finetune it to be the way you want it to be.

greenknight··on I let ChatGPT analyze a decade of my Apple Watch data, then I called my doctor
On the flip side, i had some pain in my chest... RUQ (right upper quadrant for those medical folk).

On the way to the hospital, ChatGPT was pretty confident it was a issue with my gallbladder due to me having a fatty meal for lunch (but it was delicious).

After an extended wait time to be seen, they didnt ask about anything like that, and at the end they were like anything else to add, added it in about ChatGPT / Gallbladder... discharged 5 minutes later with suspicion of Gallbladder as they couldnt do anything that night.

Over the next few weeks, got test after test after test, to try and figure out whats going on. MRI. CT. Ultrasound etc.etc. they all came back negative for the gallbladder.

ChatGPT was persistant. It said to get a HIDA scan, a more specialised scan. My GP was a bit reluctant but agreed. Got it, and was diagnosed with a hyperkinetic gallbladder. It is still unrecognised as an issue, but mostly accepted. So much so my surgeon initally said that it wasnt a thing (then after doing research about it, says it is a thing)... and a gastroentologist also said it wasnt a thing.

Had it taken out a few weeks ago, and it was chroically inflammed. Which means the removal was the correct path to go down.

It just sucks that your wife was on the other end of things.

greenknight··on Ask HN: Those making $500/month on side projects in 2025 – Show and tell
Love the AI generated image, "Extra-Large (>72pt) Font". Made me chuckle. Definetly a feature of the app.

But looks really cool ill be trialing it this week!

greenknight··on Sony's Mark Cerny Has Worked on "Big Chunks of RDNA 5" with AMD
AMD does do semi-custom work.

Whats to stop sony being like we dont want UDNA 1, we want a iteration of RDNA 4.

For all we know, it IS RDNA 5... it just wont be available to the public.

greenknight··on Melbourne man discovers extensive model train network underneath house
This is in Melbourne, where most homes are sold via auction (because of the limited supply)... lots of people are forgoing building inspections because of it. Wouldnt be surprised if he didnt do one.
greenknight··on Cursor 1.0
Claude Code Pro ($17 per month) now supports it, just ends earlier
greenknight··on RenderFormer: Neural rendering of triangle meshes with global illumination
The other thing is that this is supposed to sit in between 3d rendering and compositing with regards to VFX

The 3D render, in an ideal world, is super smooth without imperfections.

The compositing, would take the denoised 3d render, and add other imperfections such as film grain, bloom, and other post effects.

greenknight··on Why Blender Changing to Vulkan Is Groundbreaking [video]
I have never had Blender take 1:52 to open... ill open it now cold. 5 seconds.
greenknight··on Native visionOS platform support
Correct... But from my understanding... OpenXR isnt reliant on OpenGL? it supports Vulkan, DirectX and metal -- https://github.com/godotengine/godot/pull/98872
greenknight··on Blender releases their Oscar winning version tool
FFMPEG is another. Any online video platform probably uses it.
greenknight··on Blender releases their Oscar winning version tool
I have been working in the CG / 3D industry for quite some time... when i first started about 15 years ago... Maya was the default... everyone knew it, it was THE default. That being said we have been on blender since 2.5 days.

I was talking to someone on the weekend, and found out they were studying animation... i was like oh so youre using Maya? they were like whats maya?

There has been a massive shift. I think there was a new era brought about when 2.8 was released. With it, they really pushed their dev fund, which helped them to get better, which made them bigger, which got them more donations, which made them get better. Cyclical loop.

Im excited to see where they go next.

greenknight··on Nvidia announces next-gen RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 GPUs
Last titan was released 2018.... 7 years ago.

They may resurrect it at some stage, but at this stage yes.

greenknight··on S/Australia's biggest battery charges up as new storage prepares to enter grid
> Their electricity prices always have been expensive by Australian standards. However despite the investment of billions replacing coal and gas with wind and solar, those prices have dropped a little. They expect to complete the transition and be 100% renewable this decade.

I think this is one of the drivers for people installing solar on their houses... We have a solar rate of 40% in the state. People want to reduce their powerbill as much as possible, which in turn helps us become more and more 'Green'.

The problem is in summer when the solar input into the grid, vastly outweighs the demand, and the demand spikes with all the airconditioning clicking on in the evening.

Energy Storage (Batteries), plays a huge part in our state becoming self-reliant in a green way.

greenknight··on Blender 4.3
What really kickstarted their development... was the introduction of the Blender Development Fund -- https://fund.blender.org/

They made tiers, made it simple and easy, and promoted it.

Before the fund really was pushed... they were getting about 5,000 USD per month to develop it... Now it is sitting at 215,000 USD per month.

More money = More developers. More Developers = Better product.

Yes it didnt happen overnight that increase, but it was slow and steady.

greenknight··on TSMC cuts off client after discovering chips sent to Huawei
12 million, say its 1% thats 120k phones.

https://www.tsmc.com/english/dedicatedFoundry/manufacturing/....

TSMC produced in 2023 16 million wafers, apples die size is about 105mm2 which fits around 230 chips per wafer... say its 200 good chips... thats 3.2 billion chips.

3.2B to 120k is a rounding error.

greenknight··on Llama 405B 506 tokens/second on an H200
Its weird, i looked up whether AMD has any benchmarks on the 405B for the MI300x, and came across this one -- https://dstack.ai/blog/amd-mi300x-inference-benchmark/#token...

From my understanding, it can get up to around 2500 tokens/s? Both are 8x units (h200 and MI300x)

greenknight··on Wine 9.9 (Dev) – Run Windows Applications on Linux, BSD, Solaris and macOS
I am curious as to why you think wine is obsolete?

Proton uses wine heavily, so there is a massive market with the steam deck using wine to run their games.

greenknight··on Microsoft Launches Surface Laptop 6 for Business and Surface Pro 10
> Why do the surface people keep hamstringing themselves with intel? I am confused to what shady backroom deal is going on but it seems rather pointless for both parties.

Probably massive kickbacks or massive discounts. Just remember, Intel put out this graphic when Zen was just released -- https://cdn.wccftech.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/Intel-vs...

greenknight··on Natron: Open-source alternative to Adobe After Effects
I think it should be compared to Nuke instead of After Effects... After Effects works more with timelines and effects... Nuke is node based, which is what Natron has built itself to mimick.
greenknight··on Apple's decision to drop iPhone web apps comes under scrutiny in the EU
Not sure how accurate these stats are -- https://www.businessofapps.com/data/apple-statistics/ but in 2023 Europe was about 25% of its overall revenue (america was about 50%).

I think investors would be pretty unhappy if their revenue went down by 25%.

greenknight··on Vice website is shutting down

greenknight··on Sam Altman Seeks Trillions of Dollars to Reshape Business of Chips and AI
They are definetly putting a lot of effort into ROCm & HIP, but definetly accelerating.

ROCm 6 was out Dec 16 (2023), 5.5 was May (2023). 5 was Feb 10 (2022). 4 was Dec 19 (2020)
