graposaymaname··on Notable AI Models
Damn, by the year 2028 (median, predicted based on current trends) all human generated content would be used to train the models. Baffles me, considering how cold the AI winter really was, even a few years back.
graposaymaname··on How to avoid losing items? Holding pens
More intrigued about the socks part, how did you solve it? I’ve lost enough to understand that there’s something clearly wrong about the way I deal with them.
graposaymaname··on How Venus ended up with a mini-moon named Zoozve
Absolutely. Adding the links below -

graposaymaname··on The Final Speech from The Great Dictator (1940)
Got the opportunity to watch this film on a big screen at a local film festival last week. I think he wrote the whole film around this speech. Also there's this wonderful scene where he(Hynkel) dances with a globe in it:

graposaymaname··on Revenge bedtime procrastination
Thanks for putting a name on this.

I’ve been suffering from this for a long time(and occasionally still do), but have started leaving my phone farther away and it has significantly improved.

A part of me still feels that the sense of control and freedom which you get during the night is unparalleled.

graposaymaname··on OpenAI's board has fired Sam Altman
What? I don’t understand this at all after all those interviews and openAI profiles.

It was always a bit strange that he never had a share nor took salary from OpenAI, but then what about his vision(and dream from childhood)to achieve AGI and all?

graposaymaname··on Ask HN: What are you passionate about at the moment?
Me too! I started shooting with a Canon AE-1 and am absolutely loving it so far.

It’s definitely an expensive hobby considering the price of film, processing and high quality scanning - but still I love the process. Maybe since it is slow and you can still easily make mistakes shooting film. Makes me think a lot more about them somehow, very wholesome hobby to have.

graposaymaname··on Ask HN: What are you reading these days?
I’m reading two very interesting books right now.

- Designing Data Intensive Applications by Martin Kleppmann; comprehensive study on data models.

- 9 Pints by Rose George; it’s 9 stories/anecdotes about blood. Supremely enjoyable non-fiction writing.

graposaymaname··on Before Skynet and The Matrix, there was Colossus: The Forbin Project
Strongly recommend watching ‘Metropolis (1927)’ if you’re into film history. It’s one of the oldest science fiction movies ever, and is still a good watch. It’s about a humanoid robot and an authoritarian government.

I saw it this week and was baffled by the insight and the scale of it.

graposaymaname··on Ask HN: What is the best advice you got on any aspect of life?
Love the one from OC :)
graposaymaname··on Ask HN: What's the best lecture series you've seen?
I'm currently doing an MIT OCW course called 'The Film Experience'. I've not seen someone talk about and analyze a work of art like this in a long time. Supreme lectures and the course material (assigned reading, videos) is wonderful as well.

graposaymaname··on Ask HN: Comment here about whatever you're passionate about at the moment
Sure thing! Can you recommend a few with good english translations - if that works?
graposaymaname··on Ask HN: Comment here about whatever you're passionate about at the moment
At the moment, I'm trying out comics after reading non-fiction for a long time. I started with Watchmen, a supremely cinematic experience so far. I've not found such joy from reading a book in a long time.

graposaymaname··on Ask HN: Is Hacker News slow today (2021-10-04)?
I believe its mostly due to users flocking in to check why Facebook owned sites are down.

graposaymaname··on The Big Sleep: The most baffling film ever made?
Well it might be at times.

But there are movies/stories where it adds a whole different layer upon leaving that decision to the viewer.

For me the final scene in Inception is a really good example of using the above said ambiguity.

graposaymaname··on Poll: Switching from WhatsApp
I don’t think so. It doesn’t use the double ratchet algorithm used in DMs but still the participants of the group formulate a secret key for the group and share this key with every participant using the more secure protocol. The key cannot be read by the server as it is shared using conventional E2EE.

Refer this video from computerphile for more details. Start watching from 5:24. https://youtu.be/Q0_lcKrUdWg

graposaymaname··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
We all saw this coming, and it’s most unfortunate that the network effects simply make us all share our data with them.

But doesn’t this violate GDPR? Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought asking the user to share data or leave service was illegal under it.

Also the same under iOS 14, again I have almost zero knowledge regarding the app store policies but I thought it had the same condition that an app should be functional without the user accepting data sharing policies.

graposaymaname··on WhatsApp gives users an ultimatum: Share data with Facebook or stop using app
Well, is it encrypted?
graposaymaname··on WhatsApp updates its Privacy Policy to mandate data-sharing with Facebook
Ah well, here in my country post pandemic almost everything runs on WhatsApp.

From Assignments being shared by teachers on school classroom groups to now payments via WhatsApp.

graposaymaname··on WhatsApp updates its Privacy Policy to mandate data-sharing with Facebook
Yes me too. I’d be happy to pay for WhatsApp if I had an option to, instead of sharing my data with Facebook.

It’s almost like I’m compromising my most personal data for access to essential services and don’t know whether we can call the customer a “king” in this scenario.

graposaymaname··on WhatsApp updates its Privacy Policy to mandate data-sharing with Facebook
Well we all saw this coming.

This puts me personally in a very bad state as I can never stop using WhatsApp because of its popularity here(ref. Fax machine problem). It’s almost like essential service.

graposaymaname··on No Cookie for You

graposaymaname··on Why does Linux have so much trouble sleeping and waking?
Would it be for the same reason that it takes too long to shutdown? My laptop (dualboot - ubuntu/windows) takes significantly longer to shutdown when on linux. Even with the SSD - which made windows really faster.
graposaymaname··on Our World in Data: Suicide
I can't shout this loud enough! This is important!

More power to ourworldindata.org and everyone working on the research.

graposaymaname··on 50 authors, 50 science fiction stories shorter than novels
+1

Absolutely loved Chiang's short story collection "Exhalation". I didn't quite see SF as essential reading before reading this book.

graposaymaname··on Göbekli Tepe
Well, somebody's reading Sapiens I guess :D
