gordon_freeman··on I have made the decision to disband Hindenburg Research
Like listening to “Lose Yourself” before every major interview. :)
gordon_freeman··on Meta announces 5% cuts in preparation for 'intense year'
Yes. Reminds me of this conversation in Shogun:

Yabushige: “How does it feel to shape the wind to your will?”

Toranaga: “I don’t control the wind. I only study it.”

gordon_freeman··on Apple squandered the Holy Grail
Apple Maps is still not good compared to Google Maps. If I want to go somewhere for the first time I can't trust to use Apple Maps. (tried a lot, always come back to Google)
gordon_freeman··on Apple squandered the Holy Grail
Siri had so many years to iterate and get refined that by now I'd assume it would have been as omnipresent assistant as in "Her" movie (without negative impact of course) but see where we are today: I am still using it for only weather and setting alarms and even in that it sometimes works and sometimes does not.
gordon_freeman··on Willow, Our Quantum Chip
So one of the interesting comparisons between Quantum computing vs classical in the video: 5 mins vs 10^25 years. So are there any tradeoffs or specific cases in which the use cases for Quantum computing works or is this generic for "all" computing use cases? if later then this will change everything and would change the world.
gordon_freeman··on Half-Life 2: 20th Anniversary Update
For folks who don’t read article and come to read comments directly.
gordon_freeman··on Half-Life 2: 20th Anniversary Update
I think they are also merging Ep1 and Ep2 together into HL2 now and have gradual progression of HL2 to E1 and then to E2. I just browsed my Steam game library and can't find separate copies of E1 and E2 there because of being merged with HL2.
gordon_freeman··on MTA Open Data Challenge
But even if dataset is incomplete or not accurate, do you think we could at least get directionally right insights from such datasets?
gordon_freeman··on Tesla has taken down 2016 release noting full self driving hardware capability
Anyone who is still thinking to trust Tesla AP/FSD should watch this video [1]

Most of the Tesla's high stock valuation depends on them executing Robotaxi biz plan and seeing how Waymo cars are self-driving in some cities for so long and now beginning on highways, I still wonder why is taking them so long to understand the proven first-principle that LIDAR and Radars are essential hardware components to solve self driving and they just can't rely on cameras alone.

gordon_freeman··on Tesla has taken down 2016 release noting full self driving hardware capability
I feel like something is off with Elon and he is not well. Nowadays he's basically going against everything he stood for so long: freedom of speech (trying to suppress views that he does not like), climate change (now he does not have problem with oil companies), Negative impact of AI (liking/sharing fake AI posts to promote Trump), etc.

It is a sad story actually that his potential is wasted like this way.

gordon_freeman··on Shopify is acquiring the Threads team
I know Shopify founder is a big fan of Rails and RoR framework from a documentary [1]

So does not surprise if he is doing this as an acqui-hire to get more quality RoR Devs to join Shopify!

gordon_freeman··on Ex-OpenAI board member reveals what led to Sam Altman's brief ousting
so in that regards most of the Board of Directors at companies do not have a say in hiring or firing a CEO then? Because they come from a different background than what a CEO at given company spends his days on.
gordon_freeman··on Carmakers Will Give Your Location to Police Without a Warrant, Senators Say
> You truly think about every move -- e.g. "Gee, I hope my insurance company doesn't misinterpret this 'hard braking event' as me being an irresponsible driver."

This reminds me of the "Thought Police" from 1984.

gordon_freeman··on Ilya Sutskever to leave OpenAI
first Andrej and now Ilya. Talent exodus at OpenAI?
gordon_freeman··on Ilya Sutskever to leave OpenAI
remember that from the Silicon Valley (HBO) episode. :)
gordon_freeman··on Meta Is Shuttering Workplace, Its Enterprise Version of Facebook
Not a fan or a user of Workplace but I do not understand the reason of shutting it down to external customers if it is going to be used internally for Meta workers anyways? I mean Meta can keep it available if customers want to use it without doing massive marketing, sales or support. Can someone help explain what kind of cost savings Meta can have by shutting it down for external customers?
gordon_freeman··on I'm puzzled how anyone trusts ChatGPT for code
yes. LLMs are great at giving a template or code block for specific usecase and then I use it after understanding, modifying (if needed) and testing it. I am not sure about ChatGPT but Gemini Advanced even allows modifying code and running it within the answer itself which is convenient to test out minor changes.

Also, getting template of 100s of LOC saves time in writing it from scratch even if I know exactly what I'd need to write.

gordon_freeman··on The Seattle Public Library is reducing maximum digital holds
This feels like a lawsuit from US justice department waiting to be filed against the book publishers. Why does an ebook need to cost 3X to a PL compared to what I as a consumer would otherwise purchase from Amazon.
gordon_freeman··on David Lynch presents 'A Thinking Room'
For the folks new to Lynch movies don't forget to watch his possibly the strangest of movies: Eraserhead. I have watched it more than 5 times and everytime I watch it I learn something new.

And btw this scene from his movie is just gold: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UozhOo0Dt4o

gordon_freeman··on Show HN: I made a books recommendation app based on your mood
I pretty much knew the exact book I'd want to find when I'm "sad" and just after hitting couple of buttons...voila, I found "Man's Search for Meaning" by Viktor Frankl. An essential book to read and reread to realize all our worries can not compare to what this man went through surviving the Holocaust.

Some other books to read when being sad is, Dale Carnegie's classic "How to stop worrying and start living" and some books on stoic philosophy by Seneca.

gordon_freeman··on Visa, Mastercard Agree to Lower Swipe Fees, Settling Long-Running Lawsuit
yes. i pay all my CC bills on time and don't incur any fees. So it's no-brainer to pay using card as I get cash-back plus perks like dispute/warranty protections etc if something goes wrong.
gordon_freeman··on How to Start Google
> "But you will avoid many of the annoying things that come with a job, including a boss telling you what to do."

Isn't this a bit misleading and can only be true for companies that don't take VC money or never go public (ex: Basecamp/37 Signals)? For VC funded or public companies, ultimately you'd have to be responsible to answer to your shareholders.

gordon_freeman··on Cisco Acquires Splunk
It may get more expensive in the future. ;)
gordon_freeman··on Ask HN: Since Google rebranded Bard to Gemini, is anybody still using ChatGPT?
i don't use Gemini for the image gen so all the negative news about it being left leaning and biased maybe true but for me does not matter that much for now.

What I use it mainly for, is to learn new concepts or brush up on stuff in Python and learn ML and Stats concepts deeply. it seems like Google made lots of improvement since they launched it as a Bard in terms of accuracy and usefulness especially when it comes to coding help.

Genuinely curious where do folks see chatGPT better than Gemini?

gordon_freeman··on Apple to wind down electric car effort after decadelong odyssey
i agree with your general sentiment but for Apple I do believe it makes sense to focus on AGI as they could incorporate it within their OSes and products to make them more productive for the users.
gordon_freeman··on Why Capital One Wants to Buy Discover
> I don’t think we can count out the possibility that the deal will go through. I suspect that the government could approve the deal because they hate the duopoly of Visa/Mastercard and want another player competing with those two giants.

This is the most important (and maybe only compelling one) argument in favor of approving the deal by regulators! They'd definitely like someone to standup to the giants Visa and MC networks and bring much needed competition in that space!

gordon_freeman··on Our Company Is Doing So Well That You're All Fired
How would you check for the visible dip in the productivity? and in what time frame? Sometimes it is not easy to measure the impact of layoffs on the org in the short term and it may take some time to realize it.
gordon_freeman··on Show HN: Aldi Price Map
Would it not be better and more insightful to take an aggregate price of 50 items (picked from various categories) at each Aldi store and create a map like this to understand how Aldis in different regions have different pricing and the difference etc?

I am saying this because currently, some items like 'Navel Orange' are cheaper on the West Coast vs the East whereas items like 'Veggie Burger' are cheaper on the East Coast compared to the West Coast.

gordon_freeman··on Gödel, Escher, Bach is the most influential book in my life (2022)
