goodbyesf··on UK birth slump dubbed ‘good for planet’
> from what I understand their TV news is completely rabid in the same way our tabloids

Your understanding is flawed. Cable news ( fox, cnn, etc ) is rabid, but broadcast news ( abc, nbc, cbs ) is more serious and 'professional'. Especially the nightly news.

> but their newspapers are relatively level-headed

Once again it depends. The wall street journal ( more professional ) to the ny post ( more rabid ) which oddly enough are owned by the same company controlled by the same foreigner who answer to the same elite.

The rabid-professional or the left-right dichotomy is an illusion because the media pretty much is controlled by the state/elite. They appear to be superficially different on silly cultural matters but fundamentally agree on the important stuff.

> the country, yes. The world demographic of people who use your product, no.

But the ads are target to the people in the country. Besides, the world at large is far more anti-lgbt, anti-women's rights and anti-woke than the bizarro world USA we've turned ourselves into. Are you seriously suggesting these companies are peddling pro-lgbt and women's rights propaganda advertisements to win over muslims, africans, indians, chinese, south americans, etc?

Crazy how when you refuse to accept reality, how you have to form insane contradictions after contradictions...

> and many commercials aimed at an older audiience, e.g. cable TV, do focus on this.

No they do not. That's the point.

> Are we also playing dumb on the generational gap in technology, demographics using online media, and their ideaology?

Who is talking about online media. Besides, even after insane brainwashing the younger generation isn't as 'woke' as you think they are. Sure, there are differences between generations, but people are ultimately people. But this has nothing to do with what we are talking about does it?

How dumb does one have to be to think that the american companies are creating lgbt ads for american audiences to win over saudis?

goodbyesf··on China’s property giant Evergrande files for bankruptcy protection in Manhattan
> Given that the major lenders and banks are state-owned , this essentially means that the government bears the loss through these institutions (what else can happen anyway??) .

All major banks ( 'too big to fail' ) are state owned. The only difference between china and the US is that china's state also directly runs the government whereas our state hires out the running of the government to popular clowns. It's essentially the difference between owner operated business vs employee run business. But fundamentally, it's the same thing.

> To address these challenges, the Chinese government has enforced exit bans and placed these individuals under strict supervision. They are often required to return these funds to China, potentially under threat of reduced prison sentences. This sounds not right... but yeah... it is China.

What is so special about china here? 'Exit bans' exist everywhere. If you commit serious financial crime and are deemed a flight-risk, your passport gets seized and you are banned from leaving the country. This happens in every country but for some reason when china does it, it's deemed 'special'. And getting a reduced sentence for cooperating with the government is the norm everywhere. If 4 people commit a crime, it's basic strategy of the prosecutor to offer 1 of the criminals immunity or reduced sentence to testify against everyone else. Once again, what's so special about china? It's amazing that basic standard legal process is consider special just because china does.

> A full government bailout, in the Western sense, does not appear to be on the table.

There is a full government bailout or not. Nothing 'western' about it as if there is a common 'western' strategy about anything. Governments all over the world do full bailouts, controlled or strategic defaults or stay out of the issue depending on the severity and systemic importance of the situation.

goodbyesf··on Too Many Vacant Lots, Not Enough Housing: The U.S. Real-Estate Puzzle
Exactly. The primary retirement asset of baby boomers is their house. The seconardy retirement asset is their 401k/investments. One of the reasons why housing prices and stock prices have to go up. It's a political imperative. As a corollary, population has to go up as well.

> This comment feels a little conspiracy theory-ish.

Is conspiracy theory-ish code for true or obvious? Strange how 'conspiracy theory' ad hominems became popular recently.

> If a sufficiently big block of customers likes the idea of 'minority, lgbt and women's rights as you put it, they you're gonna see a bunch of companies trying to present themselves in a way that if favorable to that block.

Playing dumb I see. The country is majority christian and white. Using your logic, all commercials should be christian themed and advocate for whites.

goodbyesf··on A look into the finances of SpaceX
> CEO sets the vision. Without vision, even perfect execution is pointless.

The chairman of the board on behalf of the shareholders sets the vision. The CEO along with the other C-suite executives executes the vision. But in this case, both the chairman, ceo, cto, founder and majority voting shareholder is elon musk. So you are ultimately right.

You can tell the elon-hate has gone insane when they can't bring themselves to give elon any credit for spacex.

Besides, even if gynne shotwell deserves all the credit for spacex's success, elon deserves credit for hiring her in the first place so elon wins again.

> That's an entirely different issue tho, a private company regulating its own product has nothing to do with a gov trying to restrict internet access to its citizens.

That's my point. A private company regulating its own product is fine as long as it is private and independent. My point is that all 'private' companies appear to be following the same script which isn't something we'd expect from private independent companies. What's strange is that someone flipped a switch and all private companies, both political parties and government itself started behaving in the same manner. It's not just online censorship, it's the broad cultural campaign of chaos all under the banner of 'minority, lgbt and women's rights' mostly. Did every company in every industry from motorcycles to hollywood to news all magically decide to speak with one voice. Or is it that they were all directed to.

In china, it's obvious who is in charge. The communist party. They give orders, everyone follows. Who is giving orders to the our private companies, political parties and government?

goodbyesf··on Jaded with education, more Americans are skipping college
> I was exposed to topics and classes I would have laughed at earlier (philosophy, for one)

Same here. Thought I left the horrors of pointless essays and open-ended questions ( what do you mean there isn't a correct answer? ) once I left high school. My college required that we take philosophy, literature and history classes as electives. Turned out to be my favorite classes and where I learned the most. Especially philosophy and history.

goodbyesf··on LK-99 isn’t a superconductor
> Math and logic are as much subjected to falsification as physics or biology.

No they are not.

> Mathematicians write proofs, and their peers try to find flaws in them.

There is a difference between checking whether a proof has flaws and running experiment to falsify a theory. In other words, when a proof has no flaws ( aka has been proven ), it's proven forever. Once euclid proved that there are an infinite amount of prime numbers, that's it. Nobody tries to falsify his claim because it's already been proven. Also, mathematicians checking for flaws in proofs is not empiricism. Go learn what empiricism means first before making absurd assertions.

Not only do you not know what science is, you don't even know what math is, you don't know what empiricism is.

> I am obviously talking about scientific knowledge

Then what's your nonsense about 'Math and logic are as much subjected to falsification as physics or biology.' Do you know what a syllogism is? How about modus ponens? Implication?

> If humanity forgot all the works of Mozart and Schubert, it would be a very sad day, but society would still function. If humanity forgot how to make steel, or had to rediscover the fourier transformation, we would have a problem.

If humanity forgot language, laws, government, etc, society would crumble as well.

Or are you going to pretend that language, laws, government, history, etc are now part of science.

goodbyesf··on New York City bans TikTok for government employees
> As someone from India, this is false. How is the US responsible for China claiming Indian territory?

Firstly, India is not in east asia. My comment was specificially on east asia. But even here we are indirectly involved due to britain using india to invade china. Funnily enough, it's called an 'expedition' rather than a failed invasion. As the 'successor' of the british empire, we are now the principal 'free tibet' agitators.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_expedition_to_Tibet

Also, india claims chinese territory ( once again as a legacy of the british invasion of china from india ). Frankly, india and china have the same enemy. They should really be working together, not against each other.

> Do you forget that during WW2, US supported mainland China with aid?

We supported the 'nationalists' who were fighting the 'communists'. Guess which one is mainland china and which one is taiwan.

> Without US opening up its market, mainland China wouldn't have developed so fast.

You have it backwards again. Why do you repeat the same thing in so many threads? Are you part of a pr group or something? Just so strange. It's not the US that opened its market. It was china who opened its market to the US. This is basic history. Not just in the 1970s, but also in the 1800s as well. And it's not just china that advanced, it's the US that advanced as well. Crazy how a country can advance if the US isn't trying to destabilize or invade it. Huh? One can only imagine what india, iran, much of africa, south america, etc could be if we'd disappear or simply stop undermining or destroying these regions.

> Also, Taiwanese people are not puppets.

The people aren't but the elite are. They are our worthless puppets.

> Shouldn't and couldn't. The US accepts a one-China policy. So the other way could also happen.

They can and should. Not only that, they should broaden it into a racial or regional issue. White supremacy got east asia colonized, oppressed and nuked. Maybe turn the tables on us.

> The difference is slavery. Taiwan is not going against CCP in defense of slavery.

The civil war wasn't about slavery either. The north had slave states - maryland, delaware, missouri, kentucky, west virginia.

'The Emancipation Proclamation did not free all slaves in the U.S., contrary to a common misconception; it applied in the ten states that were still in rebellion on January 1, 1863, but it did not cover the nearly 500,000 slaves in the slaveholding border states (Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware) or in parts of Virginia and Louisiana that were no longer in rebellion.'

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emancipation_Proclamation

But your point is moot since the supreme court declared secession to be illegal. We, in the US, legally do not believe in self-determination by a group of people.

Stop getting your 'history' from propaganda. My advice, go look it up and dig just one layer deeper and you'll realize most 'history' is nonsense.

goodbyesf··on Petition to stop France from forcing browsers like Firefox to censor websites
Exactly. Mozilla is one of the worst tech companies pretending to do good. Tech wasn't always like this. In the 00s, everyone was for free speech. Mozilla wasn't like this either. Hate to say it, but once the tech elite ( or more like the money elite controlling tech ) started talking about minority, lgbt and women's 'rights', they all started censoring, deplatforming, oppressing. Of course to fight 'hate speech' - whatever that means. It's like someone or some group flipped a switch and everyone from business to politics started singing a different tune.

Once again, everything we accuse china of, we are. China has a single party controlled media right? How is it that one day, every commercial and media suddenly became so 'diverse'? Not saying it's a good thing or a bad thing. Just asking who flipped the switch?

goodbyesf··on Vietnamese EV maker worth more than Ford or GM after US listing
But market cap is price multiplied by total outsanding shares ( public + privately held shares ).

If you and I IPO a company. We each keep 25% of the shares and float the remaining 50%. Using your logic, our insider shares representing 50% of the company has no value.

Also, if the company were to pay dividends, are our shares not applicable?

You can't calculate the value of a company on just the float, unless the float represents all or most of the shares.

Of course having such a small float is ridiculous as well. Seems like the vinfast stock is exists solely for financial shenanigans behind the scenes.

> So people in Taiwan have no say in what happens to them?

No more than the people of the south had a say in what happened to them.

Imagine if after the civil war, china got involved and 'liberated' the south from the north.

Taiwan is entirely a US creation. And china should take it back.

Almost everywhere there is instability in east asia, it's the fault of the US. From japan to myamnar and everything in between.

goodbyesf··on Naomi Wu and the Silence That Speaks Volumes
> I'm not sure why this is.

Do we have a nuanced discussion or deeper understanding of iran? Libya? Vietnam? Ethiopia? Myamnar? Niger? Of course not. People just follow state propaganda. Doesn't matter who it is, americans, europeans, chinese, russians, etc.

Besides, nuanced discussion or deeper understanding of china wouldn't change the geopolitical realities of the situation. Whether it was the ussr, ottoman empire, japanese empire, etc, our enemies have to be caricatured and destroyed.

The real question is why the china, ussr, ottoman empire, japanese, etc aren't doing or didn't do the same. Why is it that china or the chinese are so desperate for american approval or understanding? While we don't give a shit whether the chinese have a nuanced discussion or deeper understanding about us.
