goatcurious··on Silicon Valley Women, in Cultural Shift, Frankly Describe Sexual Harassment
I remember coming across a 2011 article on similar behavior by a New York investor, where I could not figure out whether the writers were condoning the behavior, in an almost fawning tone, or highlighting a problem. http://observer.com/2011/11/charlie-odonnell-women-in-tech-d...

Just read it again, it is beyond cringeworthy.

goatcurious··on Ask HN: As an employee of a company, how do you assess its health?
The free-food patterns don't apply on a company which is frugal by nature, e.g. Amazon
goatcurious··on Fitbit is reportedly buying Pebble for around $40M
Kickstarter money is not same as investment money. Most/all of it gets used up in fulfilling the orders

He has something in common with Indian housewives and temples: http://blogs.wsj.com/indiarealtime/2011/07/14/indias-600-bil...
goatcurious··on Biomedical superstars are signing on with Google
> This is a hiring market that they can easily dominate by offering salaries of 50k-90k

Yes. Most of academia pays as per NIH guidelines -- http://www.niaid.nih.gov/researchfunding/paybud/pages/salary...

Even 60K will get them a PhD with 5 years of experience anyday

goatcurious··on Shutting down Uber in India was unwise
One can argue for payment reforms in India. But Uber, by knowingly ignoring the norms, had gained an unfair advantage over local services (Olacabs, Taxiforsure, Meru, etc). This levels the playing field.
goatcurious··on Text and Ride in India
I think Autowale predates Uber (or runs close), guess someone edited the title appropriately
goatcurious··on The mystery of Google+
..but reddit won't be reddit if there was no anonymity
goatcurious··on What is A/B Testing?
Certainly not a clever innuendo. Looks more like an oversight. There isn't much awareness about Star of David in India.

It is the easiest star to sketch -- even my teacher in elementary school used to use the same star in my grading.

Thanks for the thoughtful comments! A bit of oversight on our part about the advice requests. We'll fix the flow for posting it.

We will clean up and categorize the advice requests. You are absolutely on point on discoverability. We are experimenting with the concept of affinities, where based on your affiliations, you get more or less access to mentors. Trick is in defining these affiliations correctly.

Thanks so much for the encouragement! Look forward to interacting more. (p.s. drop me a message at Mentii so I know who you are -- https://mentii.com/mentor/sumit.suman)

Thanks Shane -- quite a neat idea!

In the very immediate term, we are also tracking the recruiter's activity and engaging them 1-1 on community rules.

David -- this is terrific! Thanks!

Agree with you on giving more guidance and structure to the relationship. It is certainly the next phase for Mentii.

Our view was that a mentoring relationship starts with the discovery, and a query -- as you mentioned, it takes a lot more for it to develop into something serious. But, we got to start somewhere.

The training session notes are really useful -- emailing you for more detailed thoughts. Thanks again!

Jayson - thanks for the feedback. We will have to tackle the spam / irrelevant messaging problem soon.

We would love to reach out to the recruiters who messaged you, and understand their need better -- could you send us more details at support @ mentii.com

>A way to ask a question and let people answer it. Results could be ranked in term of "top mentor", or other people could vote on it.

Right now, we are using the advice requests to encourage 1-1 interaction. A public discourse, with voting could be interesting but we erred on the side of assuming that many won't be comfortable with having their career questions publicly discussed. We will revisit this assumption.

Re: karma

Mentor karma is coming soon. Interesting possibilities there.

Thanks for the wonderful feedback, emailing you for more 1-1 time.

Jordan, thanks! This is Sumit, another founder of Mentii. We had heard about you guys! Would love to catch up and get your thoughts -- emailing you.
goatcurious··on You should be a mentor
I'd say more than a public figure, reach out to folks with good software development experience with a specific query. See how they respond, and take the conversation from there.
goatcurious··on Ask HN: I am from Brazil, how I find mentors?
Try http://mentii.com -- it's still in beta but there are a few startup advisors / mentors explicitly offering help.

disclaimer: I run Mentii and happy to help you find the right mentor if no one responds (reach out to me at sumit at mentii dot com)

goatcurious··on Building a 200000 Dollar Business in 11 Months Flat
Correct, Lakh is 100K units. It's used commonly with INR, in India.
goatcurious··on Wil Wheaton on Instagram's new ad policy
Agreed. Exactly my problem with the catch all argument that all these concerns will go away if we buy the service.
goatcurious··on Wil Wheaton on Instagram's new ad policy
Does paying for a service help keep my data private? For example, if I'm a paid user at Linkedin - does that mean they would treat my data differently than that of the free users?
goatcurious··on Stanford MBA price tag hits $185K: Highest in the world
Cost break up for 2 years: Tuition 115K; Rent & personal: 50K; Books & stuff 8K; Study trip 4k; Health 8k.
goatcurious··on Ask HN: As a freelancer, how do you ensure clients pay?
Does anyone use a payment escrow? Like what some market places like Elance provide?
goatcurious··on Great use of .xxx domain (Safe for work link)
Absolutely, it's a marketing stunt from Zomato.com -- contains food pictures
goatcurious··on Ask HN: what is a good spot to work in New York?
Grounded on jane st is terrific. Great coffee, good number of plug points, extremely pleasant interiors.
goatcurious··on Pebble's E-Paper Watch Exceeds $10 Million Raised On Kickstarter
Is this funding or working capital? Most watches come at cost through KS. They would need to seriously ramp up the supply chain to fulfill the orders in the promised timescale. And that would need expensive resources - some of which cannot be met via the $10mm (as most of it might get consumed in manufacturing). Though further traditional funding should be the least of their problems - bet the VCs are clamoring for a piece now.

Hope they can find a Foxconn to manufacture everything in time and they can ramp up their operations team. My best wishes to them - really hope they nail it. I bet next few months would see war scale efforts from them.

goatcurious··on We work a 4-day week and just raised $4.75m
Not yet but do plan to in future when I have more control over my paycheck. In theory it sounds as if it will cure the productivity loss coming from Monday morning blues and early Friday - would be interesting to test it out.
