glanzwulf··on Golf has a problem: people are hitting the ball too far
Yeah, I see your point. It's a tricky aspect because if you go that road and mess with the engineering aspect of the sport, what's the point to remain in the sport for the manufacturers? If you can't sell new "and better" clubs to make shit players like me hope to feel like Tiger Woods?

But if they change the course, that won't affect me. I (and others like me) will never get to play at Augusta but those who do get to play, will continue playing there.

So win win?

glanzwulf··on Golf has a problem: people are hitting the ball too far
But then isn't the issue just with the course? It was designed in 1894 so maybe it's time to update it?

Since then the equipment changed, the players changed, but the course hasn't (much as I'm sure the grass has and that plays a part too).

glanzwulf··on So I only ate potatoes for 2 weeks
What would you say is the best benefit for you?
glanzwulf··on So I only ate potatoes for 2 weeks
"Po-ta-toes! Boil em, mash em, stick em in a stew!"

Fun experiment but for me crazy, specifically this part:

>some days we were losing almost a pound of bodyweight due to ingesting only ~500 calories

Can't even imagine only eating 500 calories in one day.

glanzwulf··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
Yep. Us Europeans have a tendency to pretend that "America Bad - Europe Good". And sure, we don't have the gun violence and have healthcare, but we also have our own share of violent crime.

And of course it all depends on many factors, but I know for a fact that not all of Paris is safe, or all of Berlin. You have your bad apples everywhere.

glanzwulf··on Traffic on StackOverflow falls ~12% in the last week
Either it's ChatGPT or it's all the layoffs. You don't need StackOverflow if you're not working
glanzwulf··on Counter-Strike 2 – Limited Test for select CS:GO players
Haven't been this excited about CS in a while. I'm coming back baby!
glanzwulf··on Why it does and doesn’t matter if Google, Microsoft or Zoom certify your webcam
For most, if not all of us, it doesn't matter, but to my 55 year old and pretty much tech illiterate father this is pretty major. The one to get is the one that works on his device
glanzwulf··on A taste of Brazil: How guaraná soda became a national icon
If I'm not mistaken it has less caffeine than Coke or Pepsi. But I haven't had it in a couple of years, not a big fan personally.

edit: ok so it seems that is the case for the brand (guarana antarctica) I know of (and the only one I saw sold/advertised where I come from)

glanzwulf··on How they filmed The Last of Us arcade scene
Funny enough, where I lived in 2003 arcades were ancient already, everyone was at home playing PC/PS2
glanzwulf··on The widespread layoffs are more because of copycat behavior than cost-cutting
It's cost-cutting in the sense that after lockdowns workers are getting too much power. Salaries are still high but now they don't even come to the office? How dare they.

Now you create a wave of fear and uncertainty, new hires can't negotiate a remote position, they'll take anything because they need the job. Slowly we go back to where we were and maybe even lower compensation in the process.

glanzwulf··on Eggspensive
Not op, but I'm in Berlin and a couple of days ago I went to buy some eggs and it was ten for 2.99EUR - 3.18USD.
glanzwulf··on Fastbook: Listen to audiobooks faster (2020)
I use audible quite a lot, and I like the 1.2x-1.4x range because I feel like sometimes they slow down the original audio and it just doesn't feel... real, but it depends entirely on the books. One time I tried getting it up, I just wasn't sure what was going on and was lost. Sure, after a couple of minutes the brain kind of adapted and I was hearing it but I wasn't actually listening.

I feel like the pursue for speed/efficiency kills the time our brain needs to actually absorb and digest what it just listened. If after a week you don't remember anything, what was the point?

But hey, if it works for you it works.

glanzwulf··on Digitec Galaxus now displays warranty score and return rate
That's a great policy. I've used them a couple of times recently and was very impressed, now I might just use them even more.
glanzwulf··on Whatever you say about Elon's tenure, Twitter does ship now
They do ship, but you can clearly see they shouldn't. For example, the Twitter blue fiasco could've been avoided had they stopped to think instead of just ship it.
glanzwulf··on The gas industry is paying Instagram influencers to gush over gas stoves (2020)
I have a "decent" electric radiant type stovetop. I have tried induction before and I agree that it's better than what I have for example, but there's just things you can't do without the fire. I guess it's something that depends on how much you cook and what you cook. Can't char tortillas or veggies on the electric stove top.

Unfortunately for me, since I'm renting I can't change what I have and even if I could, it's pretty hard considering the country I'm in (Germany). Not too fond of gas over here.

glanzwulf··on The gas industry is paying Instagram influencers to gush over gas stoves (2020)
Nah, that's not what I meant. It's just that I've been seeing these posts against gas stove pots in social media, and I'm always there being all "pro gas". I guess I can now send bills to the gas industry.
glanzwulf··on The gas industry is paying Instagram influencers to gush over gas stoves (2020)
Today I found out I'm a paid influencer. Shame nobody told that to my bank account or my instagram followers.

To me gas stoves are the best, and now that I don't have one I miss it even more.

glanzwulf··on Artist banned from subreddit because style looks like AI art
It's a personal opinion that you, the mod and maybe even I can agree on but that doesn't matter. It's a personal opinion and when not asked, don't give it.

It's not our place to tell someone stop doing what you're doing because computers can do it better.

Let people do what they want and enjoy life.

glanzwulf··on Delta becomes the first major airline to roll out fast free WiFi to all
I was actually quite surprised when I went to the USA recently with United and they had 2 options of Wi-Fi, a free one for things like WhatsApp/telegram/etc and then a paid option for pretty much everything else. And the pricing wasn't even bad.

But then my return flight was via Swiss and they had only one extremely limiting and expensive Wi-Fi option. It was starting at like 20MB for 10€ lol.

glanzwulf··on Artist banned from subreddit because style looks like AI art
Sure, but you can also record yourself working for example. A lot of people do it on twitch for example.
glanzwulf··on Artist banned from subreddit because style looks like AI art
I love the reply of that mod. It's... actually exactly what I was expecting from a reddit mod.
glanzwulf··on Ask HN: Would it be immoral to “use” a job as a cash cow for your own startup?
If you work the agreed amount of hours and you provide the agreed amount of services/deliverables, does it matter?

As long as you're doing what you agreed in your contract, it doesn't matter. It's only a problem if the job performance suffers due to your startup.

glanzwulf··on Ask HN: Wearables for Sleep
Yeah, honestly I wouldn't mind a system with the subscription if it was tied to a lower upfront cost. Basically, get the ring for less BUT have to pay a monthly fee, OR, normal cost and get a life-time use for the app.

One thing I'm hoping for is their referral program might give "free months". Basically they have a system where an active user can share a code and give a 50€ discount, and they'll give something. A while back it was yellow tinted glasses for computer work, right now they have merch. I'm hoping next promo is free subscription.

glanzwulf··on Ask HN: Wearables for Sleep
So I started my journey with the Apple Watch and used a variety of apps, but I just didn't like the results and more often than not questioned the accuracy. There were always some discrepancies, moments where I knew I was awake but the app was saying I was asleep or vice versa. Plus, sleeping with a watch isn't the most comfortable way I'd say.

I then "upgraded" to the Oura gen3 and so far I've been very happy with it, but I'm still in the free phase of the subscription. I'm not a fan of this new model and I'm still unsure if I'll continue paying once my time is up or move on and sell the ring.

I do like the data points I'm getting, I like seeing the progress I've made to better my sleep and I like the almost real time prediction (based on things like temperature changes I can see if I'll be sick the next day). Was also very interesting to look at the data during the time I had covid.

I guess once that first bill comes in, I'll have to reevaluate how important this is to me. You know what they say, less netflix/starbucks === buy a home.

glanzwulf··on Petrichor
Interesting, I first found the word in a Doctor Who episode. It was the favorite smell of one of the main characters of that season.

I wonder how many other different pieces of media have introduced others to the word

glanzwulf··on Ask HN: What habits did you achieve this year?
It was intentional.

So to wake up I had an alarm since I had to be up for work in the morning. But for bedtime, I would go to sleep super late every day. I'd spend the time playing videogames, watching movies, etc.

The reasoning was, I wanted to "enjoy" the time I had after work and didn't want to sleep, because going to sleep would mean after a couple of hours I'd have to wake up and go to work. So I'd prolong that time as much as I could.

glanzwulf··on Ask HN: What habits did you achieve this year?
I went from sleeping 4h a day, eating junk food and living a pretty much sedentary lifestyle, to sleeping 8h minimum, counting my macros and calories daily, and exercising 6 days a week.

During the summer I read "Why We Sleep" and thought "damn... maybe I should change my lifestyle". So I went 0 to 100 in no time.

It's been almost 5 months of consistency and I've never felt better and now I can't see myself going back to the way I was.
