glanzwulf··on Search engines alternatives now that Google isn't Google anymore
> It messes up sometimes

i have the opposite experience as i've found it to mess up a lot to the point that I can't trust the AI Overview answer at all. I've seen it be confidently wrong too many times and now the trust factor just isn't there.

glanzwulf··on Ozempic Melted Away Weight–and the Idea of 'Body Positivity'
just because you lift weights and eat protein doesn't mean you'll be bulky, do not be ridiculous.
glanzwulf··on AirPods live translation blocked for EU users with EU Apple accounts
If they wanted to have this in the EU, they would've. Not going to blame brussels for the dirt that apple is throwing at my face.
glanzwulf··on FCC to eliminate gigabit speed goal and scrap analysis of broadband prices
Germany is a special case actually because they just refused to go on the fiber train and instead kept doubling down on DSL. Goes all the way back to the administration from the 80s and onwards, it's finally changing tho.
glanzwulf··on Unlike ChatGPT, Anthropic has doubled down on Artifacts
yeah, it's been a bitt iffy for me this week. took a few days off and came back yesterday and in the mean time feels like claude code took 15 steps backwards
glanzwulf··on Novel drug could protect brains from damage after repeat concussions
Is this drug sponsored by Roger Goodell?
glanzwulf··on [dead]
Who wrote the title? Joseph McCarthy?
glanzwulf··on E3 Is Officially Dead
RIP. An important part of the gaming history is now gone, such a shame.
glanzwulf··on Piracy Is Back: Piracy Statistics for 2023
Same boat here, also Germany. Wanted to watch the Bourdain show "No Reservations" and it's practically impossible.

There are only 3 ways:

1. Import the DVDs from the US, but pay a high cost for the DVDs, the high cost of shipping, the taxes and customs and eventually, once it arrives, watch it.

2. Be a criminal, get a VPN, fake address and data, prepaid US credit card and subscribe to discovery in the US and watch it.

3. Be a criminal and pirate it easily.

Is piracy really the problem?

glanzwulf··on NaNoWriMo: National Novel Writing Month
From what I remember when I last tried it, NaNoWriMo worked with the honor system. If you wanted you could paste a wikipedia article in the editor and it would count the words and tell you good job, but you'd only be lying to yourself in the end.
glanzwulf··on Tim Sweeney on Layoffs at Epic
I'd argue it was a bad play, they gambled on something others had gambled and failed, and just as the rest they didn't even put a dent in the market. All they did was overspent their resources and now have to resort to layoffs.

You mention EA, and they did try to break into the market and left steam for a while... they had the money, the franchises, the personnel and they couldn't do it. Now they're back on steam. Anyone else would look at what happened and would learn from their mistakes.

glanzwulf··on Tim Sweeney on Layoffs at Epic
> For a while now, we've been spending way more money than we earn

I guess giving away free games and not charging deveveloper (or charging very little depending on exclusivity deals) wasn't the best financial decision. Who would've thought?

Shame about the people impacted by this, I actually know some of them, hope they find something quick.

glanzwulf··on Battle of Hodów: When 400 Poles repelled 40,000 Tatars in 1694
Well, questionable original source aside, just went on a rabbithole in wikipedia reading about it. Or do you consider wikipedia also propagandist?
glanzwulf··on TimeGuessr: Guess what year a photograph was taken
Damn, that was fun.

Got 40,465/50,000, I feel like I'm the geoguessr guy from twitch.

glanzwulf··on Meta is blocking EU-based users from accessing Threads via VPN
Tell that to my app I guess. Just opened it and checked some "threads", refreshed, got some likes. All seems to be business as usual. Located in Germany, no VPN, via iOS.
glanzwulf··on Meta is blocking EU-based users from accessing Threads via VPN
But you don't need a VPN to access it. As long as you can install the app, you can use it, no need for VPN. That's how I've been trying it out just to see what the fuss is all about.
glanzwulf··on How blind photographers visualize the world
Would be interesting to actually be able to see this. But alas I'm a little bit too far from Walnut Creek
glanzwulf··on iOS 17 automatically removes tracking parameters from links you click on
> I use uBlock Origin on Firefox on Android with "Actually Legitimate URL Shortener Tool" added

That's the problem. This is too complicated/too much trouble for the end user who just uses his iPhone via Safari. Do they the privacy and all that? Yes, will they go out of their way with all that trouble? No.

While you're not wrong that it's a company A fighting company B with users as pawns, it still is a win for the normal end user.

glanzwulf··on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Release
Well, looking at the time it takes them to make a mainline Zelda game, the next one will not come out on the Switch, so it'll be easy to overcome that technical bar.
glanzwulf··on My friends who cheated in interviews are getting promoted (2022)
I dunno, I think it's pretty hard to keep cheating as a developer. How would a developer even cheat to get promoted? I mean, a PM I can see survive for longer, but a SDE?

I actually had this issue at my current job where we hired someone who seemed great and who did really well on his interview exercises but then once he started working... well, it was pretty obvious he did not know what he was doing at all. So he was let go straight away. There was no way he could cheat his way to stick it out for longer than a month.

glanzwulf··on My friends who cheated in interviews are getting promoted (2022)
I think the issue is the interview process, because clearly the difficulty of the interview does not match the difficulty of the job.

Sure, they cheated to get in, but then once in they found out it wasn't that hard to stay and get promoted.

glanzwulf··on Ex-Apple VP Mike Abbott Joins General Motors as Exec Vice President, Software
Having used proprietary infotainment systems in the past and currently using carplay, for me it would 100% be a complete deal-breaker. (Unless of course I'm buying a car that predates the technology)
glanzwulf··on Ex-Apple VP Mike Abbott Joins General Motors as Exec Vice President, Software
Hope he convinces them to go back on the stupid decision that is to abandon Carplay/Android Auto.
glanzwulf··on Journalist writes about discovering she’d been surveilled by TikTok
Exactly. So this whole talk of "let's ban TikTok" is nonsense that won't solve the problem. But America doesn't have the guts to do what must be done to protect the privacy of its citizens (also doesn't want to)
glanzwulf··on Journalist writes about discovering she’d been surveilled by TikTok
It is collecting information but it's not specifically for a government. Facebook and Google also spy on their users. Should we ban them too?
glanzwulf··on Europe to ChatGPT: disclose your sources
> Once AI can replace actors in movies, as well as singers and models like Instagram influencers and so on, maybe some of the weird hero worship and the paparazzi and the gossip mags and all that nastiness will fade away somewhat

I dunno, I remember seeing on youtube Hatsune Miku concerts being pretty packed, and there was that one guy who even married Hatsune Miku. Who knows what'll happen with AI.

glanzwulf··on Too Many Americans Are Missing Out on Rice Cookers, the Best Kitchen Gadget
I always thought that rice cookers were silly. I would think "I know how to cook rice so why have a rice cooker?" Couple of years later, not really sure what prompted me but I got one.

I will never go back and it's a must have for anyone that eats rice. Doesn't matter how good your rice turns out, the machine will always outcook you. Perfect rice, every time.

glanzwulf··on Imgur Updates TOS, Banning NSFW Content
Time for someone to create an image hosting service that doesn't suck part 2?
glanzwulf··on Don't write clean code, write CRISP code
Funny enough this happened to me yesterday. I had to do a small change of code in a component and then when I pushed the code I got an error back. After searching for what was happening, it was actually a code I copied and named "Component2" two years ago when I was starting out. Today I would not have made it the way I did, but in my first month...

And thank god for github actions! :D

glanzwulf··on De-Stressing Booking.com (2019)
It's an interesting extension, will give it a go.

I've been booking a few hotels for this year as I have a bunch of trips aligned and booking is really fucking annoying. All those urgency prompts don't make me book faster or anything, they never did. And after a lot of bookings I tend to not even see them, my eyes already blur them out. I search for what I'm looking for and I book it.
