gizmo385··on How to Passive-Aggressively Shame People Who Use LLMs Selfishly
I share your sentiment of not being overly judgmental when you see an en/em dash but this feels overly reductive and hostile:

> Proper writing in general is being derided by younger folks who are too uneducated to tell the difference.

There are legitimate differences in writing styles between age groups and cultures and being overly prescriptive in what is “right” vs “wrong” doesn’t help your argument IMO

The music was breathtaking here - I'd absolutely pay for a version of it. Really solidified the experience
gizmo385··on US Gov acknowledges that 100K fee does not apply to existing H-1B visas holders [pdf]
It’s not the media’s fault that the initial executive order was an ambiguous mess that threatened the livelihoods of immigrants all across the country.
gizmo385··on TikTok divestment law upheld by federal appeals court
One does not need to be a sock puppet to believe that the justification for this ban is shaky at best.

Every social media network does basically the same thing as Tiktok and the government has produced no compelling evidence for the ban. They just keep saying “the evidence is classified but trust us”

gizmo385··on TikTok divestment law upheld by federal appeals court
This law has pretty big free speech implications which seems potentially controversial on the legal front IMO
gizmo385··on Python type hints may not be not for me in practice
The third option here is writing type stubs for the library, which you can sometimes find community versions of as well. They’re not too time consuming to write and generally work well enough to bridge the gap
gizmo385··on Bitcoin puzzle #66 was solved: 6.6 BTC (~$400k) withdrawn
Is there something unique or special about the private keys that are guessed? This seems like an incredibly wasteful allocation of compute (which wouldn’t be surprising given that it’s bitcoin but still)

gizmo385··on Here lies the internet, murdered by generative AI
> I'm trying to get my kids to use their Ubuntu Linux machines instead of the fucking iPads.

Why? Like seriously. Why? What benefit does this give to your kid?

From your kid’s perspective, the laptop is going to be less useful, more hostile, it’s going to limit how they’re able to talk and relate to their friends.

Outside of your desires as a technologist and personal feelings about Linux, why should your kid want to use it? It feels like you’re projecting the ideals and values of your career onto your kids and then you’re surprised when they don’t share those ideals.

Huh? What does this even mean? Are you honestly claiming that humans can't work without something standing over their shoulder the entire time?

gizmo385··on Cloudflare lays off new hires
I'm not saying that you should believe they do, but it's pretty common for companies to act like they do and given how common that kind of loyalty talk is, it doesn't surprise me that people do
gizmo385··on Cloudflare lays off new hires
> The company wants to try and make more money and one way is eliminating your job. Why is that so personal?

God forbid we expect people to be treated with a bit of dignity and given the opportunity to actually say goodbye to their friends and colleagues.

Millennials grew up being told over and over “be loyal to a company and they’ll treat you well” and have largely began their careers in an era where it’s clear companies couldn’t care less about employee loyalty once it comes anywhere close to negatively impacting their bottom line.

gizmo385··on The New York Times is suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement
A search engines principle job is to provide you with links you can find the answer to your question.

The LLMs are ingesting all of that content en masse and would provide you the answer directly, with no compensation to the writers who actually did the research to provide that answer.

Search engines are symbiotic, LLMs are parasitic.

> an AI that would otherwise save humanity.

Just to clarify, this is sarcasm right?

gizmo385··on Before Altman’s ouster, OpenAI’s board was divided and feuding
I feel like the “Terminator Judgement Day” scenario is a strawman more often than not. There are reasons to push for the safe and responsible development of AI that aren’t based on the belief that AI is literally going to launch the nukes.

The biggest risks I see from AI over the next 2 decades are:

1. A complete devolution in what is true (because creating convincing fakes will be trivial). From politics to the way that people interact with each other on a daily basis, this seems like it has the potential to sew division

2. the societal turmoil/upheaval arising from the mass unemployment (and subsequent unemployability) of millions of people without the social safety nets in place to handle that. When people are suddenly unable to work and support their families and those who have consolidated the power have no interest in sharing the wealth, there will inevitably be pushback.

gizmo385··on Meta in Myanmar, Part III. The Inside View
What exactly is the target of the comparison here? Facebooks existence? Its behavior? And whatever that thing is, to be clear, you are comparing it to the crimes against humanity committed by the nazis during world war 2? Regardless of whether you like or dislike Facebook, that comparison seems patently absurd.
gizmo385··on Unity rushes to clarify price increase plan, as game developers fume

gizmo385··on Ask HN: What is your policy regarding smartphones for your children?
As a person who grew up and found very valuable social connections in online spaces, connections that helped me figure out who I am as a person, these feel very controlling and overbearing to be a bit blunt. For kids who don’t fit society’s typical mold, whether they be queer or whatever, being able to meet people who have lived their experience is invaluable.

gizmo385··on NASA has reestablished full communications with Voyager 2
I have to say, it gets really old seeing this sentiment on HN anytime a post about older technology gets made. We absolutely can and do make technology designed to last this long - it’s just that the vast majority of us don’t work on anything with those kinds of requirements or priorities. There’s no reason you need to be building your CRUD API, data pipeline, or cell phone to last 50+ years and doing so would probably be actively harmful to the actual goals of those projects

gizmo385··on Sony just spilled confidential Playstation information because of a Sharpie
Even assuming those costs were _only_ employees and don't include licensing costs, contract costs for major voice talent, etc then you're still looking at about 1,000,000 per employee over the course of the games development. If a game takes 5-6 years for development, then you're looking about 200k average total employee cost per year, which once you factor in things like healthcare and other expenses an employer might have to pay doesn't seem too wild to me?

gizmo385··on Why do recipe writers lie about how long it takes to caramelize onions? (2012)
> Takes about a minute.

Electric kettles are certainly fast, but this feels like an exaggeration. Technology Connections[1] made a good video on this recently and even boiling roughly 1 quart of water (which is significantly less than you'd typically use for something like cooking pasta) required almost 5 minutes to come to boil in an electric kettle.

gizmo385··on Why do recipe writers lie about how long it takes to caramelize onions? (2012)

That might be true, but the folks who are actually reading these recipes aren't restaurant cooks working in a professional kitchen.
