Shouldn’t the screen (Olympics logo) in the background be a constant blur then?
ghayes··on Jailbreaking RabbitOS
I'd generally say that disclosure should be enough (and is currently insufficient in the US outside of California), but I am weary that much of your life now involves "Pay us with Venmo" or "Customer service via Twitter," such that one cannot really opt-out without paying a significant cost.
ghayes··on Jelly Star – The Smallest Android 13 Smartphone
I tend to feel the Commbadge and communicator are tropes to make it easy to communicate to viewers. Given the technology in real life, I prefer text over voice for quick, rapid messages.
ghayes··on Reverse engineering Ticketmaster's rotating barcodes
There are a lot of journal articles about this, but here's a recent NPR story [0] and a Vox article from 2019 [1].

ghayes··on Modern-day spying: sometimes old technology is more secure
Trying to understand why the Nein Nines could happen. My first thought for a “fill” algorithm would be to just fill with zeros, and hence read out the pad, since it is going to be used up anyway. But I suppose that’s bad since if it did accidentally get re-used then that cyphertext would be fully compromised (versus say having two cyphertexts from the same pad to run a frequency analysis against). Another fill would be to add random data and pad against it, but then if your random data is flawed, you may still leak the OTP. So, I guess the actual algorithm must be derived from the OTP, but not padded with it? (Since if it were padded, there is no way to avoid a 9 digit). It just seems like zero or semi-random fill seems safer…
ghayes··on How babies and young children learn to understand language
My wife and her parents live with us and speak primarily Spanish. My wife and I speak primarily English to our son. He is bilingual with some funny quirks:

* He speaks based on his listener. So Spanish to abuelita, English to papa, and dealer's choice to my wife.

* In the early days, he would mix-translate, e.g. saying "another more" since presumably that was how he translated "una mas" in his head.

* He picked up my non-regional accent that I thought I never used anymore.

* His understanding varies based on his vocabulary in a given topic. He understands science in English, but colors generally tend toward Spanish.

* I consciously spoke a lot of Spanish to him when he was young. He didn't fall for it and only speaks English back to me.

So, I wouldn't necessarily overthink it. The goal is to get her exposure to hearing the language and building the vocabulary, and secondly, to compell her to use it to express what she needs.

ghayes··on What is the opposite of oil drilling?
I've heard basically "plant trees, bury them, plant new trees." I'm not sure if planting trees itself is sufficient.
ghayes··on Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) Phishing
Ideally, the best defense here is a FIDO-compliant 2FA or Passkey that would properly not send a valid credential for a different domain.
ghayes··on New GitHub Organization for the Swift Project
Try building a Swift project without Xcode. It works great. `swift build` and `swift test` all work significantly better than with Xcode, and there's no `xcodeproj` file. I am building in ST4 with good LSP and no problems at all.

† The doc is about building a library, but building an executable works the same.

ghayes··on Apple and OpenAI have signed a deal to partner on AI
To be fair, launching their own ChatGPT wouldn't be that much more interesting than leveraging OpenAI. What would be amazing is if they get a high-quality GPT model running locally on the device and integrate that with their services.

> Happy April 1st! This post is part of April Cools Club: an April 1st effort to publish genuine essays on unexpected topics. Please enjoy this true story, and rest assured that the tech content will be back soon!

The post’s disclaimer (and April Cool’s site itself) both imply that the goal is to touch on novel topics and should be genuine content of the author. That said, this story could clearly be apocryphal.

ghayes··on Show HN: Detecting adblock, without JavaScript, by abusing HTTP 103 responses
I have never successfully gotten a “click all motorcycle squares” to succeed. With a VPN, nothing usually works until “click until there are no more X.” It’s so consistent that I’m pretty sure it’s designed that way, since the final task is time-gated.

I’m really surprised the snow bricks hold together so well. I wonder what the optimal conditions are for forming snow balls/bricks/men.

ghayes··on How many legs do ten elephants have, if two of them are legless?

ghayes··on How many legs do ten elephants have, if two of them are legless?
For what it’s worth, ChatGPT4 answers this question perfectly correctly.

> Ten elephants would have 32 legs if two of them are legless, as each elephant normally has four legs.

ghayes··on How many legs do ten elephants have, if two of them are legless?
It’s funny since it feels like an overfit solution (since the riddle is so common).
ghayes··on Did English ever have a formal version of "you"? (2011)
I’m in a comical situation that me and my Mexican father-in-law mutually refer to each other as usted despite the fact we’d both be better off switching to informal, except for the fact that neither of us want to offend the other by being so casual.

ghayes··on BrainGPT turns thoughts into text
Which would basically turn the model into a plainly normal LLM without any need for utilizing the brainwave inputs, right?
ghayes··on Biscuit authorization
You could make your expiration short enough that you are unlikely to need revocation, and allow token exchange (trade an expired token for a new one, and that would include a revocation check)
ghayes··on Air traffic controllers pushed to the brink
Per that chart, flying is about 3x as deadly per journey as a car. Many people take a car to and from the airport, which means it nearly nets out already.
ghayes··on Python Is Easy. Go Is Simple. Simple != Easy
I've actually found Golang codebases to be the hardest to read, mostly due to the non-locality of effects from channels. It's just to easy to read a line of code and not know where to move next.
