ggpsv··on Twitter set to accept Musk's $43B offer – sources
Can you expand on what you're specifically referring to regarding TikTok?
ggpsv··on My upgrade to 25 Gbit/s Fiber To The Home
Like I mentioned in my top-most comment, "developing nation" is what people typically refer to. As to your comment, I was pointing out that "global south" is not a euphemism for "developing nation". I'd say it is the other way around and in a misguided way. This is because the global south/north designation intentionally distances itself from terminology such as "developing nation".

I understand if this comes across as pedantry but the global north and south terminology does a better job at leveling the playing field when talking about wealth and progress disparities.

As per your other question, Australia is part of the global north, China is part of the global south in the global north and south groupings.

ggpsv··on My upgrade to 25 Gbit/s Fiber To The Home
There is not as it does not refer to a geographical designation. I wouldn't say it is a euphemism, but closer to what people actually refer to when they misuse the term "third-world".

The closest geographical designation was the Brandt line drawn in the 80s showing a north and south divide in terms of global wealth distribution [0].

ggpsv··on My upgrade to 25 Gbit/s Fiber To The Home
It isn't as much as a replacement term, but you make a fair point that is doesn't translate well. It is both jargon and a loaded concept, which can be confusing when taken literally and without understanding what it aims to represent.
ggpsv··on My upgrade to 25 Gbit/s Fiber To The Home
It isn't a geographical denomination, but rather socioeconomic and political. Most of the countries in the global south denomination are actually in the northern hemisphere.
ggpsv··on My upgrade to 25 Gbit/s Fiber To The Home
This is term is commonly misused as it originally referred to countries beyond the Cold War's NATO/USSR denominations. Today the parent likely refers to a country in the global south or a "developing" nation.

I'm from what used to be a third-world country in the strict sense of term, I'd now refer to my country as a country in the global south.

ggpsv··on Ask HN: Which email app can be trusted with my data?
Thunderbird works great for me across different desktop operating systems. It doesn't have the best UI but it is all IMAP and it handles multiple inboxes/calendars (custom domains and an old gmail account) just fine. You can also tweak the settings for each inbox accordingly. I use the default mail app on iPhone.
ggpsv··on They Thought They Were Free: The Germans, 1933-45
It is certainly more nuanced and complex than reducing it in terms of a persons's propensity towards good and evil. You must look into the psychosocial conditions that made Germany the breeding grounds for Nazism. Why was it appealing to the ordinary Germany citizen? I recommend reading Erich Fromm's book Escape from Freedom as he explores this at depth. Still a relevant book almost 80 years after being written — where might observe similar phenomena today?
ggpsv··on Tailscale’s human-scale networks are still controlled by Google and Microsoft
That's right. I posted this one the other day https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30913492
ggpsv··on In defense of simple architectures
There is some overhead in using SPAs when your application could have been built in the way that the parent comment suggests.

Some front-end frameworks are closing this gap but I wouldn't necessary say they're equally a simple. See https://macwright.com/2020/05/10/spa-fatigue.html

In other words, choose the right tool for the job.

ggpsv··on The next Google
This tends to work for me as well but signal vs noise ratio has worsened over time. Despite Reddit's questionable decisions in the past years it still has useful information for all sorts of things.

Reddit's own search has become less reliable so I search via DDG like `<query> 'site:reddit.com'`, falling back to `!g <query> 'site:reddit.com'` if the former doesn't get me anywhere.

ggpsv··on Tailscale’s human-scale networks are still controlled by Google and Microsoft
Oh, I wasn't aware of that. That's certainly worrisome considering Tailscale's default configuration for the ACL and authenticating new machines. Fortunately I updated my settings to change the default ACL policy and to manually approve any new machines.
ggpsv··on Tailscale’s human-scale networks are still controlled by Google and Microsoft
Some of my use cases:

- Ditch my previous VPS + Wireguard setup which I had to maintain

- Easily add/remove my own exit nodes as I wish/need (either using my own devices or any VPS)

- Use my beefy desktop as a remote development setup

- Running syncthing/rclone across all of my devices without relying on relay nodes or whatever

- Accessing all of my devices remotely

They just make it dead simple to run your network without worrying as much about opening yourself to the internet. I know you can achieve this without Tailscale but they just make it so easy. Their ACL system is pretty easy to configure and you can even add assertions to it.

They've documented some use cases here https://tailscale.com/kb/guides/

ggpsv··on Tailscale’s human-scale networks are still controlled by Google and Microsoft
I've been using Tailscale for a couple of personal use cases and it has become one of my favorite products. It really simplified my setup and it "just works".

That said, I share OP's concerns as someone who has been evaluating alternatives to Google Workspace and Office 365. It is understandable that they may be prioritizing a B2B model, a decision which may be at odds users like OP and myself. That said, I still recommend it to teams/people who do not share this concern.

I hesitate investing further than my current setup because of this reason and I've been investigating whether Headscale/ZeroTier fit the bill. It is a shame because it is such a great product and it has been a while since I last had an equivalent experience using software.

ggpsv··on Not everyone should meditate
> but I haven't seen convincing evidence that meditation works.

"works" to what end?

ggpsv··on Not everyone should meditate
Thanks for sharing. I'm curious, did you consider at any point untangling those feelings with a psychotherapist?

Your experience resonates with me, but I came to a different conclusion. Meditation did open the doors to a more conscious awareness. That sounds grandiose but it isn't. It means having a practice of observing thoughts and emotions as they arise. As you describe, this can lead to more clarity into the order or nature of things. But meditation ends there, it is a tool to bring about conscious awareness. It does not "create" those thoughts or emotions.

I ask whether you've worked with a psychotherapist because I found myself in a similar predicament. I realized that my discontent had little or nothing to do with my "spiritual" practice. Simply put, the hustle and bustle of daily life is a sure way to keep many thoughts and emotions at bay. A meditative practice lets the stream pour through. For me meditation became a tool to bring those thoughts to the foreground and getting to know them. Through that process I get to know myself better. If necessary, I'll work with a psychotherapist to go through it.

ggpsv··on Not everyone should meditate
I've observed that sometimes "meditation" is used as a catch phrase for several different practices, especially those which the west adopted from eastern traditions.

I would not rush to dismiss all of it as disingenous just because some interpretation of it does not resonate with you. And it is ok if it doesn't resonate with you, we don't all have to agree on it.

ggpsv··on Launch HN: Pelm (YC W22) – Plaid for Utilities
This should be written down somewhere! I glanced through the website and I couldn't find any mention of the security/safety measures taken other than the UI screenshot where it says "securely connect your utility account".

If I were interested in purchasing this service I would want to know how much I can trust you with my credentials. Perhaps having a page or section in the docs that explain the security measures would be an improvement. There are other ideas in another comment similar to this one.

ggpsv··on Launch HN: Pelm (YC W22) – Plaid for Utilities
Take this as constructive feedback.

I don't doubt your intentions but these guarantees don't hold their weight relative to the sensitivity of the data that you will safeguard. Despite the process happening programmatically, developers will still have access to the backend where this occurs. Who has access to this backend? What's stopping any of your engineers from peeking at the database where the credentials are stored? Is this data encrypted at rest and transit? What sort of information is this process logging to either first-party and third-party services? Will the code be audited? What sort of compliance certifications are you planning to obtain?

Maybe you do have answers to these questions so if you do I suggest that you communicate how credentials are properly safeguarded. The guarantees that you mention in this comment don't inspire confidence as a) they can't be taken at face value b) makes me doubt you are taking the due diligence required to manage this data.

Take a look at these examples of companies supporting their claimed guarantees:

ggpsv··on Ask HN: How do you deal with getting old and feeling lost?
Agreed, great book. Meaning comes from within, it is in you to create it.

Status, material possessions, wealth, family, prestige - all of it can be taken away from you. But not meaning.

ggpsv··on Psychedelics alter metaphysical beliefs
> What if the actual reality is what you experience during a trip

Aldous Huxley touched on this idea of the brain acting as a valve or filter, wherein psychedelics loosen it and let through the stream of consciousness that you're alluding to.

ggpsv··on The Best Way to Hug Someone, According to Science
Parent is referring to tango, which originated in a spaniel-speaking area. "Abrazo" has meaning within the dialect, and that can be lost in translation.

ggpsv··on Leaving the Apple ecosystem behind

ggpsv··on The dark side of entrepreneurship
It is destructive if demand for paper means cutting down more natural habitats to replace them with a monoculture of trees. Even if you're growing tress, there's significant loss of habitat and biodiversity.
ggpsv··on The Amazon Rainforest Is Fast Approaching a Point of No Return in Brazil
I don't disagree with you. What I'm trying to say is that there are forcing functions which make it so Brazil continues to let this pass, many of which are entrenched in the history of Brazil. Calling them stupid or ignorant is to miss the forest for the trees, and ignores the fact that these activities were propelled by foreign institutions/corporations as well. To think this is Brazil's own doing is to disregard the effects of capitalism and globalization in the last couple of decades. Sure, Brazil could be "smarter" than this and act in its own interest but that hasn't bode well for most latinamerican countries in the last half century.

For Brazil to "care" the dollar value of keeping the forest untouched needs to be greater _for everyone involved_ than that of using it to graze cattle or cultivate soy. The dollar value is certainly greater all things considered (past, present, and future) but that value is less tangible to land owners and ultimately the country itself. You have to understand the socioeconomic and political context leading to these conditions.

Same goes for Indonesia and Borneo cutting down their forest for palm oil.

ggpsv··on The Amazon Rainforest Is Fast Approaching a Point of No Return in Brazil
While I agree that losing the Amazon, and all of its biological and human diversity is a catastrophe, I don't agree with this sort of finger pointing.

The same argument can be said of most, if not all, of the western countries whose primary ecosystems have gone extinct by mostly the same reasons. How come then that when the developing nations in the global south do so, they're short-sighted and ignorant?

Yes, Brazil has the sovereignty to protect the Amazon. But one also has to understand the political and economic pressures exerted both internally and externally.

Brazil was responsible for ~20% of the word's beef exports in 2018 [1]. Who is purchasing that beef? What trade arrangements are incentivizing this activity?

This is not to justify what's happening in the Amazon. This is to point out that the situation is more complex that being "short-sighted" and "ignorant".

ggpsv··on The operative system for a decarbonised, decentralised, digitised energy system
That is the hard truth that we are reluctant to accept.

Countries in the global north consume way too much energy, and countries in the global south consume way too little. This what Jason Hickel suggests in his book Less is More [0].

ggpsv··on Give Your Yard Back to Nature
I highly recommend the book "Redesigning the American Lawn" from Yale University Press [0] for people interested in this subject matter. It offers a deep dive into economic, cultural and environmental aspects of the standard manicured lawn, which they refer to as "industry lawn". They propose the concept of a "freedom lawn" as an alternative and solution to the problems presented by the infamous lawn.
