gennarro··on DoorDash Spent $1.4M Trying to Stop Mamdani from Becoming Mayor. Now We Know Why
Except they increase the charges of the food also, so you are getting taken advantage of there as well.
gennarro··on How Google Maps allocates survival across London's restaurants
Thanks for the insights. Nice to hear the facts of a situation in addition to all the guesses and assumptions (which can be interesting too of course)
gennarro··on John Searle has died
If you are wondering, it’s not the Doc guy with a similar name: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doc_Searls (But he was a PhD)
gennarro··on A competitor crippled a $23.5M bootcamp by becoming a Reddit moderator
Site isn’t loading. Hug of death?
gennarro··on Anti-aging breakthrough: Stem cells reverse signs of aging in monkeys
Link doesn’t work?
gennarro··on Scammed out of $130K via fake Google call, spoofed Google email and auth sync
100% this. Do it every time.
gennarro··on Building the mouse Logitech won't make
>>After first publishing this article a helpful commenter let me know Logitech released the MX Ergo S in late 2024, with quieter switches, USB-C, and a $20 price increase.

Been there before. 2 min of research could have saved hours (obviously fun project regardless). The thing is to do the research at the initial idea and then AGAIN before starting the project.

gennarro··on Google is killing the open web
Site not loading? Maybe the open web isn’t all it’s cracked up to be? /s
gennarro··on The UK’s new age-gating rules are easy to bypass
Except paying the vpn requires a credit card that does the same verification check so it’s not thwarting the rule at all.
gennarro··on [dead]
What is this?

Memento is a United States National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation Program (NDIIPP)–funded project aimed at making Web-archived content more readily discoverable and accessible to the public.

gennarro··on Lightfastness Testing of Colored Pencils
Very spammy images. Is this a legit resource? The test is interesting though 6 hrs/day in sunlight is very extreme for artwork.

Also I’m wondering is a fixer would help or hurt the testing. This is common with some art, like pastels.

gennarro··on Vacheron Constantin breaks the world record for most complicated wristwatch
Model name is “The Veblen”
gennarro··on NYC New Subway Map

gennarro··on My TV started playing a video in full screen by itself. What happened?
This is truly dystopian.

Also this sad excuse for an FAQ:

Q: Is payment required to receive Scenic Mode? A: No. Scenic Mode does not require payment and is part of VIZIO’s mission to continually make your Smart TV better than when you bought it.

Smart TVs are really and truly awful.

gennarro··on The Golden Age of Japanese Pencils (2022)
Can you share the name of this excellent new paper that you are using for your letters? Thanks!
gennarro··on Show HN: I got laid off from Meta and created a minor hit on Steam
Oh yes, I've played that actually. The mechanics weren't my jam, but the art and level of polish are great.
gennarro··on Show HN: Breakout with a roguelite/vampire survivor twist
awesome and inspiring. really enjoying it. Thanks!
gennarro··on Show HN: Breakout with a roguelite/vampire survivor twist
Any more details on how you made it, tools, etc? It's a lot of fun and I appreciate the gitlab link, just curious about the tooling and process that got you to such a great point.
gennarro··on Obscure islands I find interesting
Thank you for this. I too am a lover of islands. It seems like a strange thing to be fascinated with, but glad to see there there are others out there!

Fun read if you have a chance: Atlas of Remote Islands https://www.amazon.com/Atlas-Remote-Islands-Fifty-Never/dp/0...

gennarro··on Dragonsweeper — A minesweeper game that requires observation
Very much like Desktop Dungeons, which is high praise in my mind.

Excellent work! I think a lot of the feedback here is well intentioned but not from people as used to the turn-based space.

Really enjoying this. Thanks

gennarro··on How to know when it's time to go
That’s all well and good, but the complexity comes with navigating life obligations (rent, school loans, etc.) and long-term compensation (equity). Just waking away because of the talent shifting or similar is a nice concept but impractical. This advice read more like a guide to working in your 20s.
gennarro··on NYC Subway Station Layouts
And I can’t zoom on my phone??
gennarro··on Inkscape 1.4
Came here to say the same. The app is very useful for me (pen plotters etc) but it’s awful on my Mac. Barely useable despite being required for some of my workflows.
gennarro··on HP injects AI into its printers
Been on Brother for 10+ years. I think HP has a good hold on the big box buyer crowd (anecdotal: based on my needing to provide IT services for family), people who simply want a color printer but don't want to get into the research.
gennarro··on Maggie Smith, Star of 'Downton Abbey,' 'Harry Potter,' Dies at 89
Sorry to see this, she's been an absolute legend over the years. She was always great even when I didn't think I would love the show or movie.
gennarro··on Artificial intelligence is losing hype
I tried to do some AI database clean up this weekend - simple stuff like zip lookup and standardizing spacing, and caps - and ChatGPT managed to screw it ip over and over. It’s the sort of thing there a little error means the answer is totally wrong so I spent an hour refining the query and then addressing edge cases etc. I could have just done it all in excel in less with less chance of random (hard to catch) errors.
gennarro··on The Death of NYC Congestion Pricing
The article vastly underplays how mismanaged the MTA is and how poorly the subway is run on a massive budget. It is one of the last organizations that should be receiving this level of additional revenue, regardless of any sunk costs that have been put towards congestion pricing. This whole thing has been a mess for years so why double down on it when it would punish a set of residents and commuters and have very little chance of improving things for riders?
gennarro··on Ask HN: What are your favourite websites that display a lot of data / tables?
Check out https://transportation.report it has a lot of cool auto and transpo data that I didn’t even know existed.
gennarro··on The Pen, Mightier (2011)
Helpful companion if you want to learn more about the Pilot pen featured in the article: https://unsharpen.com/pilot-precise-and-hi-tecpoint-pen-guid...
gennarro··on Are You Using a Dam?
Quite easy to roll your own with api integrations from major photo players (Reuters, etc). For most applications I’d say consider building something but I’m not that familiar with the commercial options at this point.
