gennarro··on “58 bytes of CSS to look great nearly everywhere” mkws theme
I’m getting a lot of side to side scroll on mobile. That kills it for me
gennarro··on Congress.gov API
Most government departments have some form of api. Many use openapi (swagger) and have design decisions like this one, excepting the major APIs, like FDA. They enable projects like https://ofr.report/ or https://sec.report/
gennarro··on Why A4? – The Mathematical Beauty of Paper Size
Here is another good explainer which might be a bit easier to parse: https://unsharpen.com/paper-sizes/

Minor side point, I’ve never seen an x written as )( but always as / and then \ (or vice versa). I wonder if this is a regional thing ir just one person’s preference.

gennarro··on Break me out of sandbox in old pipe: CVE-2022-22715 Windows Dirty Pipe
CVE Link: https://exploit.report/cve/cve-2022-22717/
gennarro··on Song from 1989 declared a cybersecurity vulnerability for crashing hard drives
Previously shared here, via the cve, which is a less interesting read of course.

gennarro··on How to identify and misidentify a brown recluse spider (2005)
Check map. I’m good. Instantly close article. No thanks on anything spiders.
gennarro··on Apple releases macOS 12.5.1, iOS 15.6.1, patches for two zero-day vulerabilities
FYI the cve is https://exploit.report/cve/CVE-2022-32894/ not https://exploit.report/cve/cve-2022-30293/

Hopefully more info will drop soon.

gennarro··on Amazon to Acquire One Medical
I’d just note that the deterioration was happening to a noticeable extent, at least in NYC, pre pandemic. Quality might have better in SF and other places, I’m not sure. The top Drs remain very hard to see and booked for weeks if not a month now.
gennarro··on Amazon to Acquire One Medical
Just to echo this - OM was incredible for years but has fallen off a cliff in terms of service, responsiveness, overall quality. There are more offices now but Dr quality is worse and the early set of amazing staff and Drs have all left. It’s better than the old days of finding medical help but still not what it was.
gennarro··on What’s the Biggest Bird in the World?
Had the same exact thought. Thank you!
gennarro··on Auto manufacturer family tree: Who owns what?
Anyone interested in this should dive into the NHTSA data. Something like “make by manufacturer” explains this quite nicely, albeit without the history that the article nicely explained. Example: https://transportation.report/manufacturer/976/
gennarro··on Ask HN: Buy a holiday house with a tight budget
A second home mortgage is a tricky thing. It’s doubly (triply?) tricky if it’s happening in a country where you aren’t living. With mortgage rates on the rise this is something I’d proceed with only after a lot of research. Buying as not a local means you will be limited where you can buy, legal fees will be high, and you will need some sort of caretaker.

There are many articles on the subject though, ex: https://vacationhome.guide/second-home-mortgage-guide/

gennarro··on Knipex Plier-Wrench Review (2018)
I bought the little one, the cobra XS [0] for some absurd price (over $20) just for fun but it’s excellently made and I actually use it all the time! I’m waiting to upgrade the rest of my tools to knipex or the equivalently because I really appreciate the quality, even if I don’t really need it as I’m just a DIYer.

gennarro··on The Bullshit Web (2018)
I don’t really understand the complaint. If you don’t like the CNN website, don’t go to CNN or use CNN lite, which has been well documented on HN. No one is forcing you to visit the site.

Also, blocking webfonts is trivially easy at this stage so if you have specific complaints then you can take matters into your own hands with little more than a flip of a setting.

gennarro··on No Refrigerant Left Behind
Related link on refrigerants and global warming potential: https://appliance.report/gwp/

It’ll be really interesting to what happens as the next gen of refrigerants rolls out. There was a great link on hn recently about them but I’m unable to locate it.

gennarro··on Rare video games collection heist
To be fair it seems like the topic of the story didn’t play most of these games, based on their condition and description of their packaging.
gennarro··on The Modos Paper Monitor
Companies have tried for years [0] to make progress here and none of these problems (ghosting, refresh time, price) have proved solvable given the quantity of units demanded. I wonder if anything has changed or if this is just an exploratory survey that precedes any of those advances

gennarro··on Ask HN: How do you future-proof yourself?
Seconded. I embrace change while appreciating that fundamentals compound over time and most things aren’t that different from one another. For example you mentioned Atom - your transition to Sublime, VS Code etc will be much easier because of your learnings in your previous editor. That’s something that you wouldn’t have had if you didn’t put online the time or you were x years younger.
gennarro··on GM and Ford, Driving to Beat Tesla, Turn on Each Other
Interesting. Not sure about Ford, just seems to be noted as lithium ion:

gennarro··on Ask HN: Is there a TV on the market without “Smart TV” features?
This is a bit outdated but it helped me out in the past: https://helpatmyhome.com/best-non-smart-tv/
gennarro··on Automotive Grade Linux
I’d love to see on the fly calculation of things like UF https://transportation.report/definitions/utility-factor/
gennarro··on How I finally get daily journaling done with a workflow on my iPhone
I’m surprised by all the app and website talk here. I’ve always associated my journaling with quiet reflection, which means no phones or computers. That is, no notifications or requests for updates, or other distractions so I’ve never considered anything but pen and paper. I have one of these quite nice notebooks [0], that I keep handy morning and night for my journal activity. Even with quiet mode my phone is too distracting and my computer is too closely associated with work.

gennarro··on In Defense of OpenStreetMap's Data Model
Skip about 1/3 of the way down and the OSM article starts. “This is why bad design is everywhere...”
gennarro··on A Once-in-a-Lifetime Bird
Thanks. Exactly what I was looking for.
gennarro··on New study finds significant amount of HFO degradation product in drinking water
Yes, most hvac and refrigeration units are a generation behind, so perhaps the issue will only grow with time. More info: https://appliance.report/gwp/
gennarro··on A man who uploaded 2M videos to YouTube [video]
The video didn’t mention this, but the 2m videos only had 19m views. He is hardly having an impact on YouTube at all.
gennarro··on Coinbase warns that bankruptcy could wipe out user funds
“There are no risk factors” doesn’t inspire much confidence in me, even if this specific situation isn’t of much concern to Coinbase management.
gennarro··on Show HN: Free 30-year financial statements visualization
Oh very cool. Not available now. Anyway to see the codebase?
gennarro··on Nukes, nubs and coners: The unique social hierarchy aboard a nuclear submarine
This started interesting but then devolved into lines like:

“ Despite his excitement, he is the smoothest Reactor Operator in the nuclear program and can catch a power spike like he’s dimming the bedroom lights next to his waifu body pillow.”

Is this a serious article or not?

gennarro··on Why I quit this battle
What would a domain like that be worth? The lack of the content seems like it would hurt the value considerably.
