gd2··on Tech workers swore off the Bay Area, now they’re coming back
We should have learned by now don't NY Times articles about the City.
gd2··on JamRTC – WebRTC for Live Musicians
I'm zero on this tech, but I'd like to see this type of project work.
gd2··on Zoom improvements requested by music schools
Does the article ever say what the setting we should change are, or is just saying that Yale has a leadership platform that it exercised for musicians during the pandemic?

I'm rehearing with a group of highly amateur musicians, and getting some easily configurable improvement on this would be something we would definitely do, but I missed what the changed settings should be. Thx

gd2··on Facebook account now required to login to Oculus devices
Don't like
gd2··on US weekly jobless claims jump by 6.6M
True even while gas is almost zero because not driving.
gd2··on Google is finally killing off Chrome apps, which nobody really used
I have Chromebooks.

I'm now concerned and confused. The implications are not adequately explained.

gd2··on Abandoned stores, empty homes: why San Francisco's boom looks like a crisis
Seems like an important topic to discuss. Serious question, how do should I understand the concluding sentence/word,

"But walk through parts of San Francisco today, and you get a different sense altogether: not an uncanny effectiveness, but a panicked swirl of homeless capital."

What is meant by "homeless capital"? does it mean SF is the capital city for homeless like Washington DC, or does capital go to opposite of venture capital, like in banking/finance/Wall St?

gd2··on Ask HN: What do you think of the Google Stadia?
I'm not a gamer, but it * could * turn out to be a successful on-ramp for a large number of casual non-committed gamers.
gd2··on The Surprising Value of Obvious Insights
". I felt like I was hearing from Pelé that the key to becoming a great soccer player is wearing shoes."

It was just a movie, but in a movie about Pele, one of the memorable scenes was he was playing with the neighborhood poor kids, against the rich kids in a tournament. His team didn't have shoes or uniforms. And they didn't want to be made fun of . They rather crookedly got shoes, but weren't use to them, and they didn't fit.

By half time, they were losing badly. Pele took off his shoes, scored amazing goals and the team came back to within one goal.

Kinda random, but what should I believe about shoes being obvious.

gd2··on Chinese cars are still cheap, but they're no longer ugly
GAC currently has a nice display booth at the NADA show, National Automobile Dealers at Moscone Center in San Francisco, showing about 6 cars. Which is probably some sort of a confirmation of what the article says about them coming to US dealers soon.
gd2··on New Pricing for G Suite Basic and Business Editions
Right, and it felt like 8 inches of blah, blah, some analysts might care about this history, before they got to the news of raising prices.

Also agree about questioning why Google isn't pricing to create network effects.

gd2··on Google Tech Dev Guide
Tried out cloud computing. Went to the first lesson, clicked the link for the YouTube of the first video class, described as "What is the Cloud? Watch this lively video for a quick overview of the Cloud landscape. Though it's a couple of years old, it's a great intro."

But got hit with a "this video is not available" YouTube page. A YouTube search for the same title brings up lots of possibles.

I'm hopeful about this.

gd2··on San Francisco YC donation to defeat homeless prevention measure
saw this tweet this morning.

Text Good morning to everyone except @paulg, co-founder of @ycombinator, who just donated $150K to defeat a measure that will prevent 7,000 households from homelessness through eviction defense services & rental assistance.

gd2··on Tech companies in San Francisco
I see one tech startup that changed addresses about 6 months ago. Is there a correction button?
gd2··on $600 Chromebooks are a dangerous development for Microsoft
Wow, 360 Hacker News comments on a Chromebook article
gd2··on $600 Chromebooks are a dangerous development for Microsoft

Should I pay 3X's as much to get only 10% more experience, is a great question. But if I frame the choice as, I could pay less than $0.50 / hour for better experience on something important to me, my calculus is different.
gd2··on $600 Chromebooks are a dangerous development for Microsoft
I also remember that for a few season, MS did the vaporware thing. Spreading false rumors that they would be releasing a Surface in a few months that would cost about $200, and be better real computer compared to the new Google backed toy. Then after a few delays the surface limited devices came out at nearly $500, and were soon abandoned.
gd2··on $600 Chromebooks are a dangerous development for Microsoft
Right, And this excellent little known Chromebook feature continues to get better.

One can now throw tabs from one account context to the second logged in account. Left click on the top to the left of the tabs, (while the Chromebook is signed into two accounts) and it offers moving the tab to the other account.

gd2··on G Suite Happy Ending
I also believe Google is experimenting with taking its customer support up a few levels, which for years was figure it out for yourself. With both Chromebooks and YouTube subscription, I've gotten very good support through chat including call backs. Isn't that what Google One, is supposed to be about?? , real customer support if you are a paying Google Drive, G-Suite, YouTube monthly payer, etc.
gd2··on Show HN: A Build System for Packaging Applications in LXC Containers
I'm just learning about LXC containers because LXC containers are part of the Chromebook Linux breakthrough.
gd2··on Prediction of the FIFA World Cup 2018 – A random forest approach
FIFA has the reputation of favoring the big market countries, and scandals happen. Did the model here include the probability of poor and biased referees? ? Anyway I'm looking forward to the World Cup, but wish it wasn't so early on the West Coast. The first matches I'm especially looking forward to Spain vs Portugal & Mexico vs Germany Should be fun !
gd2··on Samsung’s Chromebook Plus now supports Linux apps
Maybe I gave up too soon, but I could not get either Android Studio or VS Code Studio running, because of ARM. I figure those issue get solved by people who know better than me soon.

Anyone able to point to simpler instructions on how stand up containers on CB+?

gd2··on The Mexican art of double entendre
My experience is that Mexicans do have many words and phrases for sexual references, with a goodly number involving foods. But I haven't experienced, or remember seeing, it using to make a joke of foreigners. That would be more like being mean to someone who can't be expected to understand than being funny among friends..
gd2··on Google I/O'18: Keynote Livestream [video]
Theme that I see is branding that besides engineering smarts, Google is likable, thoughtful, someone you'd want as your friend. Leading with the hamburger emoji to move the image of Google as more fun / regular human. and IMHO think its well done.
gd2··on China smartphone market suffers hard-landing, shipments decline 21% in Q1 2018
Also apps do get updated, and when they do they sometimes grow by almost a 100 MB. Repeat that X times, and the RAM on the phone turns out to be insufficient for larger apps of the new now.
gd2··on The latest trend for tech interviews: Days of unpaid homework
Hasn't this been going on for like 2 years? Or has the trend line made this more common.
gd2··on Apple unveils new iPad 9.7“ with Apple Pencil support
Glad that Apple is making an effort to re-engage with Google in the education market. In my limited experience, Apple is way ahead in apps that use the stylus effectively, but the Chrome App "Squid" shows that the tech is there for Chromebook to do almost zero lag drawing.
gd2··on Tracking where your time went with Lego workstream visualisation
I like the physical simplicity of one hour equals a colored block. I've got minor quibbles so will modify it, but good idea.
gd2··on JupyterLab is ready for users
A key point - for me as a user unlikely to develop extensions- is buried some paragraphs down. "JupyterLab 1.0 will eventually replace the classic Jupyter Notebook. Throughout this transition, the same notebook document format will be supported by both the classic Notebook and JupyterLab."
gd2··on JupyterLab is ready for users
I've read Google Colaboratory provides 12 hours of free GPU usage. Even without using the GPU, I find the Colab version useful
