gboudrias··on Google Docs gets an API for task automation
> This API just makes it slightly easier and more visible.

Yeah that's what APIs do. You can usually work with CURL requests/scraping too, but it always feels clunky and improvised, much like the method you are describing seems to me.

Making something easier means making it more accessible, means the tech based around these tools will advance faster, and that's good for everyone. It's not just a new bauble, well, except it's Google, but it will be very useful until they inevitably abandon it.

gboudrias··on Apple to contribute to U.S. teen's education for spotting FaceTime bug
Do they? I thought they were notorious for not paying taxes?
gboudrias··on Spotify will now suspend or terminate accounts it finds are using ad blockers
So... they just became profitable, and now they're about to spite a lot of users for about 10% of their revenue? I hope this day haunts them.

I can't believe how many people are discussing this as if ads are the utmost legitimate moneymaker. Ads are parasitic by their very nature, their purpose is to forcibly occupy some mind real-estate. Nobody wants to see ads, yet a large industry exists based on making people see them anyway.

I'm happy when I learn that more and more people are using adblock, and I hope companies that rely on ads to survive disappear. Spotify has chosen to put itself in that camp. I think it's foolishly short-sighted, and I hope time proves me right. The alternative is a future where the ads win... who really wants that?

gboudrias··on What Happens When You Try to Sue Your Boss
I'm fairly against arbitration and I'm fairly certain it's much more limited here in Canada.

In this particular story, what strikes me is the amounts being discussed. 1 million dollars isn't chump change to anyone. If we have to have arbitration, there should be a hard legal limit on how much they can arbitrate when a physical person is involved. Also it should be limited to financial matters, forcing any other matter (discrimination etc) to be settled privately seems... wrong.

gboudrias··on Driverless Cars Tap the Brakes After Years of Hype
I've read somewhere that driverless trucks are pretty much as hard as driverless anything, because there's always that last mile in a city. It's impossible for the ride to be 100% automated, and anything less is pointless at the moment.

I think we'll need some extremely standardized "pre-last-mile" highway exits/transfer points across the whole country to have the beginnings of a new solution. And I doubt the Teamsters will be onboard with that.

gboudrias··on New Office Hours Aim for Well Rested, More Productive Workers
This is very possible, but also there could be multiple reasons.

I don't drink any coffee and have a lifestyle very similar to OP's, and usually can't fall asleep before 2am. It strikes me as improbable that people with similar lifestyles would have different sleeping habits. However, some of us may have developed these habits for the very reasons you mention; I for one had a terrible time at school.

gboudrias··on For First Time in More Than 20 Years, Copyrighted Works Will Enter Public Domain
Yes, but YouTube is being absolutely overzealous for no legal reason. Rather, I think it serves the double purpose of keeping the government (and regulation) very far away, while pandering to big content producers at the same time.

They've surely realized very early on, they've just been trying very hard to be hush about it. Can't blame them, much as I dislike them.

Someone else already replied, I agree with them, yes. I'm curious if anyone wouldn't?
gboudrias··on Gut bacteria may offer a treatment for autism
I happen to have tried my best at that so far and I think this line of thinking is mostly an excuse not to develop empathy and show compassion.
gboudrias··on Gut bacteria may offer a treatment for autism
Interestingly, almost no one in NA justice systems talks about evil. The causality between life events leading to crime is often ridiculously clear, and choice barely factors into it.

Believing in evil is its own kind of privilege. I for one have now seen a lot of criminal cases, and I've only seen sick people and people following the path laid before them. No evil in sight, but the concept's very existence allows for a certain social stability, to the detriment of some in favor of others.

gboudrias··on Psychology’s Replication Crisis Is Real
As someone who is both a developper and a psychology student, your average coder knows about as much psychology as your average psychologist knows about coding. That is to say, not a whole lot.

I am saddened but not surprised by psychology's replication crisis. But really it applies to all of academia, psychology is only in the spotlight because some of branches have less than stellar methodology in the first place. Social psychology gets criticized a lot, partly because it's one of the only branches rigorous enough to even be tested!

Obviously I'm not in favour of this. But it's a very big machine that needs fixing, and I don't think it starts with tweaking the details; drastic changes are required if we are to gain back the lost credibility. To me, this applies both to social and hard sciences. Since this is a general problem with academia, either your field has already been called out or it has yet to be. I don't believe the current system offers an alternative (yet), though I'm cautiously optimistic about preregistration.

gboudrias··on Time to break academic publishing's stranglehold on research

Either way, I don't think he's helping the image issue.

Not sure if I understand your comment. Alphabet is google's parent company, allegedly created to assuage the fear of a giant entity by turning it into multiple quite big entities.
gboudrias··on Why I’m Giving $1.8B for College Financial Aid
Good to see philanthropy from up high.

That said, I haven't seen the term "American dream" used unironically in years. I've never been shown it as something worth reviving, insofar as it's deeply intertwined with notions like savage capitalism. For you and ourselves I'd rather have a great American awakening. But maybe I'm arguing semantics.

gboudrias··on Is Gutenberg the End or a New Beginning for WordPress?
I'm sort-of leaving tech, but I've worked in web dev for 8 years, and this is the first I hear of Gutenberg.

From what I understand, it's better WYSIWYG. Great, but we have entire essays demonstrating how WYSIWYG is garbage. Alright but people want WYSIWYG!

To me, this seems like a manifestation of the limits inherent to the simplification of UI. The frontend needs complex information to be able to correctly produce a beautiful design. Ultimately, the user needs to be aware of the concepts (too complex, apparently), or the design needs to be automated and therefore simplistic. WYSIWYG is the unhappy compromise demonstrating that consistency begets complexity.

If this dilemma really is unsolvable, then Wordpress is but one of iteration in a grand cycle of its victims. I worked mainly with Drupal, and the situation there isn't much better, they've simply opted for sophistication over usability.

gboudrias··on Facebook Network Breach Impacts Up to 50M Users
> The second bug was that this video uploader incorrectly used the single signon functionally, and it generated an access token that had the permissions of the Facebook mobile app. And that’s not the way the single sign-on functionality is intended to be used.

Is it just me or does this sound like an terrible idea in the first place? Guess we can't know for sure, but why would anything unrelated to authentication generate access tokens?

gboudrias··on Google throws away 12 years of work by investors (Portfolios in Google Finance)
At this point Google projects are basically less reliable than hobby projects.
gboudrias··on The foot soldiers behind psychology’s replication crisis
An interesting point and not untrue, but it's only important if we're trying to get at "human nature" in itself, which to me seems kind of silly as we're social animals by nature. In practice, there's nothing wrong with testing different levels of awareness, and if an experiment is part of popular culture then it's part of us too.

It should be noted that the SPE's methodology was totally fucked in the first place, and before reproducing it we'd need to actually perform it "right" at least once (which can't be done now that ethics* boards are a thing).

gboudrias··on The foot soldiers behind psychology’s replication crisis
Good comeback, sad that it's relevant too. I've seen entirely too many sketchy books and articles attempting to link quantum physics and psychology.
gboudrias··on The foot soldiers behind psychology’s replication crisis
> If psychology claims to be a science it MUST collectively accept this

I'm an undergrad in psychology. To my dismay, there is no consensus that psychology should be a science. You still hear claims that humans are too great to be measured, etc. That we are more than material, and therefore can never be studied objectively.

Of course, I disagree with this (everything real can be measured in some way), but the problem runs way deeper. It is an epistemic disaster, where most students do not try to learn the first thing about epistemology. Without exaggeration, some psychologists just want to tell nice stories. I remain baffled. I'm hoping time solves the issue, because I sure don't have a solution.

gboudrias··on YouTube's tendency to push everyday users toward politically extreme content
I only wish I would get songs by the same band... It sort of seems like Youtube tries its darndest to steer me away from the current band. I'd be happy if it just cycled between hits from the same artists, but I've never seen it do this recently.

I think what's most frustrating about it is I don't know what game they're playing. Recommendations used to be logical, now they're almost a waste of screen real estate. What even happened?
