gatlin··on The last time my family was replaced by technology
I weep for people whose scientistic reductionism has led to such devaluation of humanity. Robots don’t do anything and don’t think anything. Humans do things with and through them. What makes us special is that we exist and love one another.
gatlin··on The GitHub wiki is an anti-pattern
Parent comment linked to that answer.

Whereas you would never stoop to exaggeration or your own contribution to this fight since it’s already lost, right?
gatlin··on Richat Structure
Something with a name reminiscent of the Atlantic Ocean.
gatlin··on Jabber/XMPP: How Do We Gain Traction?
OMEMO has superseded xmpp for a while now.
gatlin··on Debian polls its developers on AI: permit or ban?
I agree with those concerns while also recognizing they also apply to virtually all of the technology we are using to argue right now.

gatlin··on Israeli firm BlackCore suspected of meddling in New York and Scotland votes
I have simply referred to speakers of Semitic languages. You are the one concerned about whether this group comprises some kind of orthodox taxonomic grouping.
gatlin··on Israeli firm BlackCore suspected of meddling in New York and Scotland votes
I have no influence on what choices you make or in particular whom you choose to ban. This conversation thread is old so of course I won't be stoking it anymore. In the future, though, if I am banned it will not be because I correctly discerned malice and called it out; but rather because someone in power wants to pretend one can be neutral on this topic. Sincerely, have a beautiful day.
gatlin··on Israeli firm BlackCore suspected of meddling in New York and Scotland votes
Speakers of Semitic languages are Semitic. This isn't controversial, unclear, or irrelevant.
gatlin··on Israeli firm BlackCore suspected of meddling in New York and Scotland votes
I never understood this: the Palestinian children whose family and limbs are torn from them for Israeli sport are also Semites. It seems like the ultimate erasure to claim "antisemitic" for only Jews.

gatlin··on Providers, not insurers, are responsible for excess U.S. health care cost (2024)
I believe you but I'm interested in the studies mentioned in your first sentence.

Which cheap vision model would you recommend for ingesting category diagrams and producing mermaid facsimiles?
gatlin··on Flatpak Will Depend on Systemd
How do I install only systemd-appd?
gatlin··on A reality check on the AI jobs hysteria
The pace of progress is precisely why many people qualitatively assume the curve will flatten soon: J curves are generally (obviously not always) unsustainable.
gatlin··on The political polarization of health outcomes in the USA
Do you earnestly think the electorate thinks about these things?
gatlin··on Google Declaring War on the Web
I offered an opinion in the previous version of this comment that was unhelpful to the discussion, even if the subject of the opinion was anonymous. Can't see how to delete a comment so I'm editing this instead.
gatlin··on Google Declaring War on the Web
I have a co-worker who does this now. He's very smart, very capable, very experienced and it's clear that he's just a frontend for Claude now. It's tragic.
gatlin··on IDF struggles to curb endless feed of soldiers posting misdeeds on social media
Why was this flagged? Social media, part of the tech industry, is part of state propaganda and should be discussed here.

Do Americans often try to use dollars in Europe?
gatlin··on LLMs are breaking 20 year old system design
*I guess there would have to be some mechanism for the database to push notifications to the client. This is not a fundamentally unsolvable or particularly interesting problem.*
gatlin··on A new California law says all operating systems need to have age verification
You seem to be passionate about your pedantry and I'm not so sure whatever.
gatlin··on A new California law says all operating systems need to have age verification
You seem to be under the impression that you have authority over me. Fascinating.
gatlin··on A new California law says all operating systems need to have age verification
I don't need to do anything. You however should stop condescending and issuing commands to other people.
gatlin··on A new California law says all operating systems need to have age verification
That sounds like a question for a psychologist or clergy member.
gatlin··on A new California law says all operating systems need to have age verification
Nope, just the normal one. It asks for your age and gates further interactions based on the answer, no? That's verification.
