gandalfgreybeer··on Why aren't smart people happier?
I don’t know what the point of this comment is. I guess you’re at least happy.

Can you elaborate on how being happy is a skill?

gandalfgreybeer··on We're improving search results when you use quotes
“-“ works but I’ve seen it fail so many times that I’m more surprised when it actually filters it properly nowadays.
gandalfgreybeer··on The Best iPhone
I'm on the same boat. I am considering getting the 13 mini though since this seems like the last of this form factor for a while.
gandalfgreybeer··on Ask HN: What is a sustainable methodology for taking notes of your learning?
I'd say decent notes are still important in a way that's not contrary to what you're saying. Our minds are very good processors but are not the best memory banks. Knowing what to take note of is part of that skill.

Sure there are people with eidetic and impressive memories but for most it's easier to just take notes of something and know where to look for the info later. That's one reason why I still keep to-do lists and calendars. Sure I can just use my brain to store all of these things, but it's easier to just have notes to look back onto and use my mental energy for other tasks it's more suited for.

gandalfgreybeer··on Practical Deep Learning for Coders 2022
Bare minimum is basic calculus, basic linear algebra and basic statistics. By basic, I probably mean first courses for those in most undergraduate programs.

I disagree with needing none and just going along as needed. That’s how you have machine learning models that look like they work but you don’t understand why they work so there might actually be problems.

gandalfgreybeer··on Practical Deep Learning for Coders 2022
Not him nor will I talk about his course, but I’ve been in the field a reasonable amount of time (both on the academia and industry side). Honestly, applied maths will get you a long way and make it easier to digest the concepts (you might just see them as repackaged problems depending on your mileage). If you have good programming skills and discipline you practically have most of what you need.

Re the course, I just skimmed it and I think you can do most things on your own hardware but if you will actually use this for something practical (not just for you or a side project), being familiar with cloud tools is a big thing especially once you scale.

gandalfgreybeer··on Bear Blog – A privacy-first, fast blogging platform
I absolutely love this concept.
gandalfgreybeer··on Apple's claim is that it bans other browsers for security
It’s funny how I’m on Safari on iOS and I’m also getting the “Your browser is not supported” error
gandalfgreybeer··on Bunny fonts – privacy respecting drop-in replacement for Google Fonts
By this logic, why would it also jump over a lazy dog?
gandalfgreybeer··on The Last Question by Issac Asimov [pdf]
I just skimmed through the article and I definitely don’t condone the behavior in the parts I read. But wasn’t he also pretty progressive in terms of women’s rights and gay rights, especially considering that time?

Obviously, he can still be progressive and an asshole since those aren’t mutually independent.

gandalfgreybeer··on Ask HN: What's Up with Google?
It may still be the best generally but it's been on a steep decline the past few years.
gandalfgreybeer··on Make Front End Shit Again (2018)
I love the kakugo website’s aesthetic. It’s simple but it doesn’t come out flat.
gandalfgreybeer··on Gitlab Handbook's HN Page
In my ideal world, most content sharing and even social media sites should be like this. Good content driving interest instead of gaming the algorithm to get clicks and views would lead to a better ecosystem of information with less noise.

Although I doubt we’ll ever reach that point so I’m wondering if there are other small communities around the web that are just more quality-oriented on the content shared (I just go to niche subreddits and mostly HN)

gandalfgreybeer··on Shenanigans on Microsoft Feedback Hub
Whenever a game I play is released on the Nintendo Switch, I am a little bit happier (eg Diablo 3, Tetris Effect). There’s honestly nothing keeping me in Windows except for video games (which I have less and less time for each year). I’m sort of looking forward to the day I won’t need to play video games on Windows and just be happy with a MacBook and a Linux workstation.
gandalfgreybeer··on Switching to an N95 mask gives a 75x boost in Covid protection
Aren’t KN95s just N95s with the Chinese standards (vs US standards) but should technically work for the same particle sizes?
gandalfgreybeer··on Tried Switching to 100% iPad – Today, I Ordered a New MacBook Pro
Good question that actually made me reflect a bit.

To put it short it’s primarily just personal preference (mostly hardware) and hard to shake tendencies.

I’m still on the older 10.5” iPad Pro (when this breaks I’m definitely upgrading) and the keyboard is okay but I prefer a mechanical keyboard if I type more. I’ve tried connecting a Bluetooth mechanical keyboard to it but I don’t like the added layer of setting things up.

Also the moment I’m working on something for a longer period, the higher the chance that I’m opening up different references etc. and juggling multiple things is easier when not on iOS.

Btw thank you. Your question really made me think and when I switch devices next time I’ll probably ask myself why I’m doing it and not just because I feel like it.

gandalfgreybeer··on Tried Switching to 100% iPad – Today, I Ordered a New MacBook Pro
I’m a physics PhD student working full time as a data scientist and although it’s possible to do all my work with an iPad (set up servers I SSH to), if I have to work on something that will take more than 30 minutes, I’d rather use my laptop.

I’ve stopped trying to go on a full iPad workflow but embrace the iPad for what it is: not a laptop replacement but more of an add-on.

PS did my best not to use the word “computer” for this comment.

gandalfgreybeer··on Google no longer producing high quality search results in significant categories
I tried that and liked what I was getting. Do you know how much they’ll be charging?
gandalfgreybeer··on If – A Poem by Rudyard Kipling
This is all personal, but I think there’s a balance between the two things that you said that is optimal. There are times that it’s okay not to express everything as long as you are able to process it.
gandalfgreybeer··on Ask HN: What was the best book you read in 2021?
Honestly enjoyed this more than The Martian, which was already one of my favorite reads.
gandalfgreybeer··on Pfizer and Biontech provide update on Omicron variant
If they said they people will need a new vaccine (which with the current mRNA tech will be relatively quick), I can imagine a similar comment pointing out suspicion that they want to sell something new.

Doesn’t make sense for them to market the current vaccine as still working if it’s not. Eventually more real world data will be coming in and it’s not something to easily hide from.

gandalfgreybeer··on Ask HN: Has Google search become quantitatively worse?
What do you use now?
gandalfgreybeer··on NES Tetris AI hits 102M points and level 237
In standard / official versions of the game they (including s, l, and j spins) don’t give bonus points (only t-spins do) and just count as normal line clears.
gandalfgreybeer··on Crypto’s hottest game is facing an economic maelstrom
Only tangentially-related but this reminds me of something interesting I encountered since Venezuelans playing RuneScape to farm gold since that currency was more stable than their irl currency

https://www.npr.org/transcripts/1018915121

More related, I’m from one of those countries where people are doing that and it is truly a tragedy but it’s not as widespread (at least in my bubble). But the thing is, a lot of people quit jobs for “get rich quick” schemes here and this is just the latest chapter of that tragedy.

gandalfgreybeer··on SARS-CoV-2 escape in vitro from highly neutralizing Covid-19 convalescent plasma (2020)
> One Sentence Summary: Three mutations allowed SARS-CoV-2 to evade the polyclonal antibody response of a highly neutralizing COVID-19 convalescent plasma.

What is “the polyclonal antibody response of a highly neutralizing COVID-19 convalescent plasma” in less technical terms?

gandalfgreybeer··on Covid-19 vaccine certs on the dark web [pdf]
It seems I was overthinking how to verify things and forgot that databases exist. Although I might have assumed that the vaccine certificates are checked as they enter the hospital (at least here in my country).

Also never occurred to me that someone in the ICU will show a certificate or pretend to be vaccinated (at that point what do you get?).

Not sure if I’m missing standard social cues or something more obvious with my questions.

gandalfgreybeer··on Covid-19 vaccine certs on the dark web [pdf]
What country? Also not sure if the answer will be too technical but how do they determine if someone who has a certificate doesn’t really have the vaccine?
gandalfgreybeer··on All Atari Games
I would guess people just love Atari games and assumed what it contained and didn’t really click the link.
gandalfgreybeer··on Brave Search replaces Google as default search engine in the Brave browser
Sometimes I wonder if it’s just me being worse at using keywords to search for what I need but I’ve noticed that it’s so much harder to find things that are actually helpful via google on stackoverflow etc.

Most annoying thing is when I restrict keywords and they still show up on the search results.

Now when I can’t find something on Google, instead of refining keywords, I give DDG or Bing a go first (both not always successful but half the time I find more useful links).

gandalfgreybeer··on Apple’s new M1 Pro and M1 Max processors
I’m not super familiar with how hardware works so this might be a stupid question but how different are the tiers of processors for each upgrade and what’s a reasonable use case to choose any of them?
