gandalfgreybeer··on Tell HN: Google-Wide Layoffs
Hey guys, this is a pretty decent gesture no matter what you think of Microsoft after mass layoffs. No need to be snarky.
gandalfgreybeer··on Google lays off hundreds in hardware, voice assistant teams
I’ve started to do this more often recently as well. Do you employ any specific approach for prompting to get what you want more consistently?
gandalfgreybeer··on Why Are So Many Americans Dying Early?
> “Larger trials will be needed to confirm these preliminary findings.”

So were there actual follow ups to this study where the sample size is not just 72?

gandalfgreybeer··on Apple introduces spatial video capture on iPhone 15 Pro
There are some scenes in the latest episode of Foundation, particularly those in Trantor, where I found the shots/focus with "weird" focus and depths of field. I have a personal theory that those were already shot with spatial video capture, designed for Vision Pro in mind.

Tangentially, if you gave up on Foundation on S1 like a couple of my friends, S2 is much much better. And if you're a book purist they sort of explain why there are differences between the show and the books in a relatively decent way.

gandalfgreybeer··on Kagi Search – Paywalled articles indicator and improved weather widget
Even this isn’t reliable anymore. I had a double quote word that was being spellchecked. Even the ‘-‘ operator would still include words i explicitly avoid. This isn’t all the time but it happens frequently enough to be annoying.
gandalfgreybeer··on Open ML Guide
There's a section for LLMs, but most major concepts are covered down to linear algebra and some hardware (skimmed through this). Are you looking for anything in particular?
gandalfgreybeer··on iPhone 15 teardown reveals software lockdown
And Apple has services for replacing that. Although I used to repair my devices myself, it makes sense from Apple’s POV. There’s far more people who don’t know how to do this (or couldn’t be bothered to learn and when they fuck up, they blame Apple) than people in HN’s demographics that are willing and knowledgeable enough.
gandalfgreybeer··on iPhone 15 teardown reveals software lockdown
Digital slavery and slavery both have definitions that are pretty different from how you use those terms.
gandalfgreybeer··on The Pirate Bay's 20th Anniversary
LimeWire I’m familiar with and one they’ve definitely used but that seems like a thing from 20 years ago. And by the 2010s I don’t know if anyone still used it. Given that, now I’m curious on why it was mentioned to be better than TBP which survived while Limewire (not sure about the others but have never heard of them) didn’t.
gandalfgreybeer··on The Pirate Bay's 20th Anniversary
I have torrented but am not very familiar in this field, but I have to say, this is the first time I've ever heard of gnutella.

Less technical people I know have heard or used TPB and are likely never to have heard of this as well.

I am curious (although I'll be googling as well) on what makes it better. As a personal preference though, if given the option, I would rather make a project that used by many reliably than to have one that is really really fine tuned but not used at all.

However, if I do see that gnutella is better for my purposes, then I will gladly make the switch and will say thanks in advance.

gandalfgreybeer··on OpenRA – Classic strategy games rebuilt for the modern era
I visited that channel and now I'm going to figure out how to play Age of Mythology on my computers this weekend.
gandalfgreybeer··on OpenRA – Classic strategy games rebuilt for the modern era
If you haven't, give Starcraft Remastered a shot. Felt like the original games when I played them when I was a kid but looks "modern" without any changes on unit interactions, etc.
gandalfgreybeer··on OpenRA – Classic strategy games rebuilt for the modern era
I would recommend getting Starcraft Remastered if you're into the original games. They're really well made. "Modern" graphics that still feel like the original and should work out of box on modern computers (even M1 macs).
gandalfgreybeer··on OpenRA – Classic strategy games rebuilt for the modern era
Hmm. Now I want to start playing StarCraft again.

It’s been a while but I honestly feel like that helped me train my focus back then.

gandalfgreybeer··on Apple vs. Meta: The Illusion of Privacy
The ads on the TV app I think are 30s trailers when playing episodes or movies (only once per session as I’ve experienced) which can immediately be skipped like a recap.

It’s the only ad on a streaming service that has never annoyed me (I also like the fact that it’s not targeted). Zero ads are better but their implementation on tv plus is the least irritating I’ve experienced.

gandalfgreybeer··on Effectiveness of physical activity for improving depression, anxiety, distress
As someone who was diagnosed with MDD, it's not something that will magically fix you. But it's something that will (should) improve your base mood. My floor was higher when I started to exercise.

It also gave me something to focus on.

I feel like it's the same thing as saying exercise doesn't cure obesity. It won't fix it if there are no other diet and lifestyle changes but it helps and is a vector in the right direction.

gandalfgreybeer··on An introduction to the impact of native planting
Tangentially related. there’s a forest in the Philippines that is hectares of land where only a single species of non-native tree was planted [1]. Go there and you won’t hear any birds or wildlife. It’s spooky. It’s partially because the birds avoid it since they’re not familiar with it and even the insects that they might eat don’t like the tree so they all avoid it.

gandalfgreybeer··on Rule of Three
Makes sense. The fact that it’s not immediately clear to me, makes me believe I’ve had a sheltered life (pun intended).

I should go out more often aside from usual city running or going to the beach.

gandalfgreybeer··on Rule of Three
Same thoughts on shelter vs water. But maybe there’s an assumption that there’s a barrage of elements or the environment.
gandalfgreybeer··on Ask HN: How to handle Asian-style “Family name first” when designing interfaces?
Minor thing, don’t call it “Western style” or “Eastern style”. I’m not sure what the correct term is.

There are plenty of Asian countries that don’t follow last name - first name so it’s not necessarily an “eastern” thing.

another opinion from me about automating based on country. It’s a cool thing to implement but might not be worth the effort.

An example I have is in the Philippines, majority of people go First Name Last Name. However, there’s a Chinese sub population that has last name first name. But then most of this sub population also have “Christian” names that they use in Most official documents or websites. I’m pretty sure other countries will also have similar nuances.

Maybe a screen name or username will be the razor.

gandalfgreybeer··on Ask HN: How to handle Asian-style “Family name first” when designing interfaces?
This is lumping Asia Pacific into one big group. For example in the Philippines, its first name - last name that’s the standard. And then there’s a minority of Chinese-Filipinos that sometimes have traditional Chinese names.

It’s more complex than what it seems that I think a razor would work rather than going through all cases.

gandalfgreybeer··on Ask HN: How to handle Asian-style “Family name first” when designing interfaces?
Personal opinion.

As an Asian person, don’t overthink this.

Just have fields for family name and given name to distinguish between the two.

Sure, when there’s a text field saying hello “first name last name” it might be flipped but this shouldn’t be a deal breaker or offensive in any capacity.

Worst case is you can have a toggle they can click but from a developer standpoint, that might be over engineering for something that might cause headaches later.

gandalfgreybeer··on Very, Very, Few People Are Falling Down the YouTube Rabbit Hole
Misinformation videos for a corrupt major political family in the Philippines started popping up early 2010s. I remember watching one as a kid and watching several related videos.

However, I don’t think I truly absorbed them only because I actually knew older people that were detained and tortured during their reign. If I didn’t have first-hand sources and access to books, looking back, I would have definitely believed them.

A decade later and that family is back in power. When I talk to their supporters, they bring up details I remember from those videos as facts. Stuff like hidden gold, royal bloodlines, etc.

I’m happy we have these safeguards now in place. I hope the LLM and generative AI models popping up will have the same safeguards. However, much like YouTube’s problem, I fear that we will only be able to put them once the damage is done and maybe irreversible.

gandalfgreybeer··on Ask HN: Are “theoretical” concepts being lost by new engineers?
Half of data scientists or ML engineers I work with can implement and train models but do not necessarily understand the underlying principles or math.

Most people just care that it works and not why.

Really dangerous depending on the problem and field tbh

gandalfgreybeer··on Show HN: Open-source obsidian.md sync server
I never tried Obsidian because the recurring price was too steep for me and I understand that localization will be a challenge. I do have to say, however, that your responses here actually sound sincere (and the reaction to OP's project is something I would not have expected) to the point that if I really need something similar to your product, I am definitely reconsidering.

I wish you and your team good luck.

gandalfgreybeer··on The complete sequence of a human Y chromosome
Not answering your question, but I have to say, this is one of the best analogies I've encountered in a while.
gandalfgreybeer··on What happened to Wirecutter?
Not related to the topic on hand but I’ve felt my google fu diminish significantly over the past years. Not sure if it’s me or my google intuition just not matching the current algorithms
gandalfgreybeer··on Ask HN: Why can't you unsubscribe from Apple promotional emails?
Just checked recent ones I got (I don’t really mind them) and I see an unsubscribe button at the bottom of the email. I’m in SEA region so not sure if that’s a factor.
gandalfgreybeer··on Ask HN: Why can't you unsubscribe from Apple promotional emails?
In theory, the Apple ID is usually an email, iCloud or otherwise, isn’t this something that can be reset from that end should you forget the account password? Not 100% sure but just guessing based on how I understand apple accounts are set up.
gandalfgreybeer··on So you want to learn physics (2021)
Zangwill should be the new Jackson. Covers mostly the same problems and topics but you can actually get through it.
