fwungy··on 48-nation bloc to crack down on using crypto assets to avoid tax
FX is the largest market in the world. It's about 30x global GDP.

If BTC can take 1% of the FX market its value would be $1.5M, each. As the price of btc rises it becomes less volatile, which makes it more attractive for large transactions. Btc transactions settle without active third party involvement or approval.

Btc, in particular, should be very attractive for International settlements in the future. That's why the OECD wants a piece.

I heard on NPR that rising prices were actually a good thing, thus this is a good thing too.

fwungy··on Nicotine (2016)
I've heard there are but haven't noticed anything personally.

Nicotine has antifungal and antimicrobial attributes. I have even seen studies claiming smokers were less likely to get serious covid infections likely due to some property of nicotine.

Native Americans treated tobacco as a sacred plant and praised it for all sorts of health and spiritual properties. That makes me think the plant and its consumption is probably a net benefit and it may be the way commercial cigarettes and tobacco are processed that cause the problems.

fwungy··on Ask HN: What purchase under $1000 has changed your life the most?
It's not the money, it's the electric connection. I'm not going to run a cord across the bathroom.
fwungy··on Nicotine (2016)
Nicotine gum just gets me on track. No buzz really, I just get more directed, keep my eye on the prize better.

I don't do it everyday and I take breaks. It all comes very organically, I don't have to plan it.

fwungy··on Nicotine (2016)
I've used 2mg nicotine gum as a mental clarity aid for years. It's cheap, effective, and harmless AFAIK.

I have stopped using it for months at a time and never has any withdrawal symptoms. Caffeine otoh is addictive for me and will cause withdrawal symptoms if I indulge too often. The caffeine buzz can make me jittery and increase ADHD type behaviors for me. Ymmv.

fwungy··on Ask HN: What purchase under $1000 has changed your life the most?
First time I used a bidet was when I started at Google. They have some bidet stalls in their bathrooms, some fancy Japanese ones too.

I was nervous about a hard stream of water going up there, not knowing how cold or hot it would be, but it was a life changer.

First thing in at a new house for me is $50 bidet.

fwungy··on New York restaurants fight back against reservations by bots
Yes, but it makes it all the more complicated because the scalper has to figure out how to process the rebate, which opens up all sorts of issues.

The scalper also has to front the money and eat the cost of unsold reservations.

fwungy··on Congress mandates new car technology to stop drunken driving (2021)
Cities hate cars, and cities dominate the legislative process at the state and federal regulatory levels. Cars are a constant problem for cities, it makes sense that they'd rather spend their time and money on things other than fixing congestion and maintaining existing roads.

They can't attack cars directly, it would be political suicide, but they can boil the frog by making them increasingly expensive. That's what they're doing.

fwungy··on Binance to terminate Russian ruble deposits
A little late and a little stupid, but current year, ok.
fwungy··on New York restaurants fight back against reservations by bots
Charge a reservation fee that is can be refunded as a credit that can only be used at the restaurant. It will be deducted from your bill or can be used at a later date. Real customers won't object to that.
fwungy··on Omegle 2009-2023
Part of a larger move to kill off the free corners of the internet. The UN and G7 governments freely talk and plan their means to reestablish the narrative dominance they had before the internet.

Just about anyone or anything can be taken down with the pairing of q woman willing to publicly claim abuse, with no proof required beyond her word, and a lawyer willing to take the case.

fwungy··on Toyota's new $10k pickup
Toyota has a small pickup in the works for the US market to compete with the Ford Maverick, which is a huge success. Probably won't see it till 2027.

fwungy··on UN chief warns Nepal's mountains have lost one-third of their ice
I'm the sort of person who doesn't take NPR or Fox News as serious sources.

Some people really can't understand that. They see the works as two sides, good vs evil, themselves having chosen good.

fwungy··on UN chief warns Nepal's mountains have lost one-third of their ice
Remember when they told us Maldives would be sunk by climate change. It's still there.

If the proportionally tiny amounts of anthropogenic CO2 are really that big a factor we are already sunk.

I'm starting to wonder if there's an unconscious death cult in the developed world that fetishizes planetary doom. That is the logical endpoint for the nihilism that has overtaken developed countries.

fwungy··on Global CO2 Levels
Ideas that undergo adversarial attack are strengthened or weeded out. A good, quality, debate can serve that purpose.
fwungy··on Global CO2 Levels
So how is that different from veing a full time job in climate change as a scientist or policy maker?

Do you believe that Koonin wants a climate catastrophe?

If a person could be so monumentally blindsided to ignore a threat that will not only harm themselves, but everyone they know and care about, then could not others be too, e.g. Climate scientists?

Another question;

Accepting Climate Change as presented by the IPCC, how do we resolve the problem of the major oil producing states like Russia and Saudi Arabia refusing to give up the oil wealth which allows them to exist as they do, and the developing world states from consuming it? Green conversions are not feasible for large segments of the world population in anu useful time frame.

The net zero policies being advocated by the G7 nations are very expensive and handwave away big problems with "batteries will get cheaper, and the tech will improve" but they fail hard if thar doesn't turn out.

If we are really concerned about CO2 driven climate change the best solution is next gen nuclear power and mitigation strategies. Make electricity so cheap that no one will want fossil fuels if they can avoid it. Yes, they just started talking about nuclear power, but it's late. James Hansen was talking about it 20 years ago, it's not a surprise.

fwungy··on Global CO2 Levels
I'm going to summarize Physicist, Caltech President, and Obama DOE appointee Steven Koonin on climate change:

1) Climate is an extremely complicated phenomenon 2) It is extremely difficult to model beyond a limited time frame. 3) The models we have, running on the most powerful, purpose built, computers rely on massive aggregations because there are otherwise too many interactions to handle. These aggregations are too large to be reasonably interpreted. 4) There is a large industry of well paid scientists, researchers, and policymakers who have built careers on Climate Change. Alarming news keeps them in a job, so they have an incentive to bias towards worst case outcomes. " It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it." - Upton Sinclair 5. Efficient and clean technology is worthy of pursuing regardless of its climate impacts. We can do more for the planet creating market based solutions in those directions than trying to manage CO2 directly.

Finally, I must acknowledge the Yale paper and climate scientists who have criticized his work. Rather than fire from the bushes, they should debate Koonin directly. He isn't a Fox News kook, if anything his credentials are superior to theirs.

Remember, one of the oldest ruse of charlatans is promising they can change the weather.

fwungy··on Toyota Reveals Maverick-Sized Electric Pickup Concept We've Been Waiting For
Toyota is perhaps the last auto manufacturer interested in building great consumer vehicles.

The Prius is an amazing car, and probably responsible for the biggest portion of electric vehicle operation given the numbers.

Their philosophy, and it's backed by numbers, is that it's better to put a little bit of battery in a lot of cars than a lot of battery in a few cars.

They're dancing around the EV trend. They'll psy it lip service to sell in the US market, but that's it.

Toyota is not a fan of the EV. Given who they are they probably have good reasons for it.
