freefolks··on US Treasuries Have Become Unappetizing for Foreign Central Banks and Governments
treasuries are the same as cash. All that means is there is still too much USD Money supply from QE and rates will continue to go higher to reduce the supply.

Thailand doesn't have the conditions required for corals to thrive. The best, most beautiful coral come from Indonesia.
freefolks··on US debt tops $40T as Treasury doubles bond buybacks to calm markets
US Debt is not the same as personal debt. US Treasuries are the same as cash so it is just a measure of how much USD are in the global economy. So long as the "debt" can be serviced there is no issue.

freefolks··on A wild idea to protect the Great Barrier Reef
corals are sensitive to rapid and wide changes in water parameters whether it be temperature, pH, alkalinity. Due to the how large the volume of water that is in the ocean these parameters really don't fluctuate as much as you would think besides temperature. pH only dictates how fast coral can grow but corals are much more sensitive to changes in temperature and alkalinity.

freefolks··on Coinbase warns that bankruptcy could wipe out user funds
There are many issues here. First is all the crypto that coinbase must hold in order to facilitate trades. If they do not have the inventory, they must source elsewhere. Second is customer funds (cash) which is what they need to facilitate a fiat exchange for crypto for their markets. I'm not exactly sure how their operations work but in a regular stock brokerage, these are segregated from their own cash although in 2010 an incident was shown that even segregated customer funds are not so segregated.

The risk here is always the same. Liquidity in terms of cash. I dont believe there is any regulation stopping coinbase from using or investing customer cash or anything preventing them from acting as a hedgefund (leveraging that cash) to make investments using customer funds. The real risk is there. If they are using crypto as collateral to make investments that are tanking in value, while crypto is tanking in value, they'll be forced to post more collateral in the form of cash or be forced liquidated to take a loss. Insolvency leads to bankrupcy.

freefolks··on What hacking AOL taught a generation of programmers
Actually the most overlooked things about AOL is about how their internal network (Merlin) got breeched through social engineering by a 14 yr old and did not have a clue about it for 5 years. Merlin is their tool that they use internally for their entire customer database and had a RAT installed that allowed people to create admin accounts, view peoples credit card, addresses, names and also allowed people to terminate accounts. AOL had 34 million paying users at this time.

I had a hayes 2400baud and a hayes 9600 baud. Once speeds got up to 14.4k , Hayes kind of disappeared.
freefolks··on US Robotics 56k Modems
HS-Link was the best. You could upload and download at the same time which with zmodem you could not. Also, if you were using hs-link, you were definitely not downloading "tradewars 2002" tradew4rez maybe
freefolks··on 286 vs. 386SX
AMD wasn't even in the picture at that time really. Meaning their marketshare of desktop pc's were so low that no one had them. Back in those days it was Intel vs Cyrix.
freefolks··on 8chan goes dark after hardware provider discontinues service
There is high chance that most of those in these groups don't even believe in most of the stuff they say. To them its just entertainment. People participate only because its a throwaway identity that is noncommittal. These groups have no leadership or loyalty. I'm sure this is understood a majority of the time by participants. The problem is that one individual who memes way too hard or is absolutely serious about the things they say. Real life friends call you out on your bullshit, they try to reason with you when you are irrational. they stop you from driving when you're drunk. Your internet troll squad does everything opposite.

freefolks··on Ask HN: Why do so many people want to see Tesla fail?
Did he have to stop at all ? Make any turns ? If he didn't, I'm not sure what point he was trying to prove as every car on the market can be driven with "one finger on the steering wheel".
freefolks··on $1.2T in risky corporate debt showing similar warning signs to subprime crisis
This is true that many/most loans have already been refinanced. 2015-2017 europe was the hot bed for refinancing and anyone credit worthy has already done so. It's a good time for the fed to pull liquidity out of the system. If they do not then CLO hotbed would eventually just move to South America which is mainly risky energy companies.

freefolks··on Bottleneck at Printers Has Derailed Some Holiday Book Sales
That best-seller for the price of $12 is based on thousands of copies, many times printed in china and shipped by container loads. There's no way you can make it for a few dollars more for short run and survive the business.

>it's not hard, or all that capital- or even labor-intensive.

Yes its not difficult but if it is not capital intensive, it will most certainly be labor intensive. Printed through a digital copier, collated, perfect bound and trimmed in one process is not the issue. Having it done "ultra cheap one-off" is and any printer small or large will tell you the same.

The idea seems simple but no one is willing to do this for free or at a loss.

freefolks··on High exposure to radio frequency radiation associated with cancer in male rats
My father recently died from a brain cancer. It was a tumor originally so he had surgery to get the 6cm tumor removed. After the removal of the tumor it immediately started to grow back and was diagnosed stage 4. When he asked the surgeon how did he get cancer. The surgeon replied with "Sometimes we have bad luck". Within a Month the cancer grew back to the original 6cm. He decided to try chemotherapy but after doing it once he decided to not go through that again. He seemed fine for the next 3 months, coherent eating then he deteriorated very quickly and died exactly within the timeframe he was told.

Cancer does not run on either side of my parents families. During the last few years up until he passed, he used to go hours everyday wearing wireless headphones, falling asleep with them on, watching tv, listening to music.

That is the only thing that I can think of that could possibly make any remote sense. I refuse to believe "bad luck" is the only reason.
