free_bip··on Show HN: We built the fastest spreadsheet
This would be a heck of a lot cooler if it was a local-first desktop application. It's still cool mind you, but it could have been a heck of a lot _more_ cool.
free_bip··on Heat Pumps Take on Cold Climates
I have my doubts about heat pumps ever being viable for Canadian and other high-latitude countries -40 degree winters. Everywhere else though, they probably should be the standard.
free_bip··on Profiteering hampers U.S. grid expansion
It's only cheap when they aren't in one of the many inclement weather events that happens during the year - Customers have had rates as high as $2.50/KWh[0] among other disastrous consequences, which is completely unconsciable and a result of the deregulated nature of their grid.

free_bip··on Vice website is shutting down
If it's the exact same content, and you own the copyright to it, that sounds like copyright infringement. IANAL but there could be some money there.
free_bip··on In Defense of Simple Architectures (2022)
That would require that engineering management actually be competent technically. A shockingly large number aren't.
free_bip··on Hackers got nearly 7M people's data from 23andMe
What would you suggest? Storing data on the blockchain where costs per GB are tens of orders of magnitude higher?
free_bip··on Zuck on the Apple Vision Pro
Why do you think Zuck would never want to upload a deepfake of himself? Seems like a very Zuck thing to do if you ask me.
free_bip··on Ask HN: Are you using a GPT to prompt-engineer another GPT?
My experience (n=1) is that current LLMs are just not good at prompting either themselves or other LLMs, and that if you have enough information to make a meaningful meta-prompt, you also have enough information to make a regular ol' prompt. I just don't think it's something that designers of current LLMs are prioritizing, so it's not very good at it.
free_bip··on Python types have an expectations problem
The -1 here is hiding the fact that -1 is really just 0xffffffff due to two's complement (architecture dependant of course)

And printing it as %d is technically a misuse of printf, since %d means print as a signed integer. If you did %u (print as unsigned integer) instead you'd see the value is really 4,294,967,295 (again, platform dependant)

free_bip··on Ring will no longer allow police to request users' doorbell camera footage
Previously discussed here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39120892
free_bip··on Ring steps back from sharing video with police – mostly
TFA states that they're still giving police footage without warrants. So if their claim is that they stopped giving police footage without warrants, then yeah, that would be a lie.

But it sounds like they're freely admitting that they're going to continue giving footage without a warrant. So I wouldn't call it a lie, more a marketing strategy. "Oh we pinky promise we won't give away your footage without a warrant! ... Well, except maybe that one time. But that was a special case, surely you understand."

free_bip··on 'Pokémon with Guns' Game Goes Viral, Angering Nintendo Loyalists
Realistically this game doesn't compete with anything Nintendo puts out, because they'd never in a million years make a game with a similar gameplay loop (shoot Xmon, catch/kill, put into forced labour, repeat)
free_bip··on Boeing needs to get real: the 737 MAX should probably be scrapped
Manufacturers in other areas regularly have to recall tens of millions of units. I see no reason this should be different.
free_bip··on The Death of Decentralized Email
Unsolicited commercial email
free_bip··on The case for better watch typography (2021)
I was hoping for some examples of what the author would consider to be bad typography on a watch, typography they don't like. Instead, we just get a generic statement of "Many brands use off the shelf fonts but small." Perhaps this is them subtly implying that they don't like it, but to me that just sounds like they're "acceptable", not "bad". Combine that with the fact that typography is about as subjective as music, I see no issue with how things are currently.
free_bip··on Contra Wirecutter on the IKEA air purifier (2022)
What's funny is this article is a much better advertisement for IKEA air filters than IKEA themselves do...
free_bip··on Generative AI Has a Visual Plagiarism Problem
What little understanding I have of US copyright law is that the DMCA is merely a convenience to content hosters - you can optionally get a chance to right the wrong to potentially avoid a lawsuit.

Notice all the weasel words in there? Yeah... They don't have to file a DMCA to sue you, nobody does, they can just sue you. (Mandatory IANAL)

free_bip··on China planning 1,600-core chips that use an entire wafer
It's one of the reasons. It's also the fact that the smaller your chip is, the more chips each wafer can make, and less wastage around the edges.
free_bip··on Scientists hail new antibiotic that can kill drug-resistant bacteria
Can someone ELI5 why we haven't switched from antibiotics to bacteriophages yet? I've heard dozens of times that it would solve the whole resistance problem since bacteria can't be resistant to all of the major classes of antibiotics and bacteriophages at the same time. As someone not educated on the matter, it seems like a no brainer.
free_bip··on Copyright claim against Tolkien estate backfires on LOTR fanfiction author
If I was in Tolkien's shoes I don't think I'd care a whole heck of a lot considering I'd be dead.
free_bip··on OpenAI's Q* model can solve grade-school math
I'll save everyone a click: The only actual information in this article is "Reuters says an anonymous source says Q* is capable of doing grade-school level math"
free_bip··on Show HN: AI Generated SVG's
They created a product and they definitely have copyright over that product.

However, what the product is creating, the output, is an AI generated Image... Which because it wasn't human authored, is automatically put into the public domain the moment it's created.

The product is copyrighted, the output is not.

free_bip··on You shouldn't be driving over 100 MPH-and your car shouldn't let you
I'd be far less charitable and say that even if it's done well (Which let's be real, it wouldn't), it would still be useless in preventing reckless speeding. You could simply disable one or both of the internet / GPS connections and the car would function as normal ("oh no! My GPS module recieved some water damage, how inconvenient!").

The article also links to a ford article that claims "Speed limit signs may be a thing of the past", as if they plan to enforce having every single car in the US to be made post 2024 and have a mandatory always on internet DRM determining exactly how fast you're allowed to go. Ridiculous idea.

free_bip··on OpenAI has received just a fraction of Microsoft's $10B investment
I'm not exactly a VC investment recipient or anything, but it makes sense to me that investments (especially particularly massive ones like this) would be done in many installments... So nothing to see here?
free_bip··on 37, the median value for the second prime factor of an integer
Given that RSA primes are usually checked against some probabilistic primality test like Miller-Rabin, I would think the answer is no
free_bip··on Musk Says His New AI Bot 'Grok' Will Have Sarcasm and Access to X Information
Hold on - I remember reading that NewRelic has an AI assistant in beta right now, also named Grok... Coincidence?
free_bip··on The killer features of the Steam Deck
Does this include gameboy games like Link's Awakening? I don't remember if it was developed by Nintendo but Oracle of seasons & ages too.
