foobarbazetc··on Microsoft SEC 8-K: IRS is seeking an additional tax payment of $29B
Not if it’s evasion.
foobarbazetc··on The saga of the Closure compiler, and why TypeScript won
Closure library/compiler was the only real way to write a large SPA back in 2012+.

You had access to an amazing compiler with a standard library that was like having every npm module you could ever need but written by Google and well maintained without the security risks.

We still use it, and the only real “wish” we have is maybe if the jsdoc “type system” could just be replaced by TypeScript while maintaining all the rest of the library/compiler.

foobarbazetc··on How Australians made the early internet their own
I helped start an early (1998) Australian ISP in Sydney (a modem bank connected to an ISDN line) with a Linux 2.0 infrastructure (Slackware…) and Perl based billing system running on Postgres 96. I was 16.

The early Australian internet was a lot of fun.

People use it as an all encompassing term for any blockchain using service or product.

foobarbazetc··on Ethereum founder on U.S. crypto crackdown
Been in the Web3 space as a side hustle for something like 2 years now and the only real usecase I’ve seen is something like USDC transfers over Solana.

Everything else is just a scam and/or ponzi.

Add to that that the price of coins is manipulated by market makers and exchanges (CEX and DEX) and it’s not looking good, honestly.

Regulation would actually improve the space a lot. Something like a national ticker for coins would go a long way to clearing out a lot of the scum.

Leave.
foobarbazetc··on Shaving 40% Off Google’s B-Tree Implementation with Go Generics (2022)
This is an amazingly non-succinct write up of why I love programming in Go.

I think it, I type it, it works and it works fast, with minimal cognitive overload.

foobarbazetc··on GraalVM for JDK 21
We use Graal to sandbox a scripting language based on EcmaScript 6 for our app.

It’s great.

foobarbazetc··on Tesla’s latest Full Self-Driving Beta tried to kill me last night
Yeah, I’m talking about FSD driving at speeds that mean certain death, not your standard cruise control+.

Do I trust Tesla to write software that works to a degree where I would entrust it with my life? No.

The team that builds the VW (and other euro makers) software also worked on Airbus autopilot.

Got to nerd out with one of the (retired) lead engineers there and the only thing he’d get into with full autonomous driving was a Waymo.

foobarbazetc··on Tesla’s latest Full Self-Driving Beta tried to kill me last night
Waymo is basically locked to 25mph here in SF.

Letting a Telsa thing self drive at over 100kph is actually kind of wild.

foobarbazetc··on Prisoners of Google Android development
They only sent the “you’re being delisted if you don’t do this” email like a week ago.
foobarbazetc··on Prisoners of Google Android development
Every forced Android minimum targetSDK update breaks literally everything.

There’s also a breaking change coming up in SDK 34 around exact alarms.

Google seems hell bent on making the platform more and more restrictive as time goes on because they started with no restrictions.

Apple started off more restrictive and then loosened restrictions as they put actual thought into APIs.

I don’t think there’s been a breaking change since iOS 8 or so.

foobarbazetc··on Block YouTube ads on AppleTV by decrypting and stripping ads from Profobuf
Wow. Need this as a golang net/http shim.
foobarbazetc··on Block YouTube ads on AppleTV by decrypting and stripping ads from Profobuf
I know it’s not as fun, but you could also pay for YouTube Premium to remove the ads.
foobarbazetc··on US smartphone shipments fall sharply, but Android more than iPhone
iPhones just work. Macs just work. 99% of people don’t want to spend time configuring anything.

Both iOS and Android stopped innovating like 5 years ago, but at least the Apple ecosystem doesn’t feel dead like Android.

foobarbazetc··on DeSantis suggests he could pick RFK Jr. to lead the FDA or CDC

There’s literally a 0% chance he gets anywhere.

Yikes
foobarbazetc··on FedNow Is Live
If this kills Zelle, that would be amazing.
foobarbazetc··on Electric bike, stupid love of my life
True. Biking is the best thing ever (also extremely expensive).

I spent a ridiculous amount on a Gazelle HMB 380+. It’s so much fun to ride. Every component is top quality. No maintenance issues ever.

Recently got a carbon fiber road bike from a Taiwanese factory. Just as fun. Weighs 7.9kg.

I will say when I tested the VanMoof I hated everything about it. The automatic shifter is extremely counterintuitive. The parts suck, a lot.

Shimano hydraulic disc breaks are pretty much set it and forget it type things, so I personally wouldn’t form an opinion of the quality of disc breaks based on the VanMoof.

foobarbazetc··on San Francisco fire chief fed up with robotaxis that mess with her firetrucks
Yup. Waymo >>>>>>>>>> Cruise.

It’s not even close.

Still wouldn’t get into a Waymo for another 3-5 years, but the quality gap is huge.

foobarbazetc··on Review of Hetzner ARM64 servers and experience of WebP cloud services on them

foobarbazetc··on US SEC sues Coinbase, one day after suing Binance
Nobody is actually “confused” though.

Crypto proponents (like every other industry that has come before, and will come after) want zero regs.

Everything else is just hand waving.

Regulators clearly know (from these filings) exactly what’s going on.

Congress needs to pass laws to spell out exactly what falls under which new regulations.

It’s clearly possible (see: Australia, NZ, UK, EU, etc, etc)

foobarbazetc··on US SEC sues Coinbase, one day after suing Binance
It’s kind of interesting that the “commonwealth” countries (AU/NZ/GB/CA) have different classifications of crypto (AU/NZ treat them as property, CA as securities, GB varies depending on the thing).

The SEC filings do give the rationale for why specific coins are securities though.

Hard to summarize each filing though. Worth reading because, unfortunately (?), they make a good case.

foobarbazetc··on Software firms across US facing tax bills that threaten survival
No, you never “catch up” unless you fire every software engineer (so income and trailing five years of amortization cancel out).

Year 5 is just a steady state of no more phantom profit taxes, but you never really get that extra tax you paid back if you want to keep operating at the same level or grow.

foobarbazetc··on Software firms across US facing tax bills that threaten survival
No one is talking about tax credits.

The expense of salaries isn’t deductible against income.
