firloop··on Pocket-sized cloud with a Raspberry Pi
Where are people buying Raspberry Pis these days? I went to go buy one a couple of days ago and it was sold out many places.
firloop··on Developing a new app is unreasonable condition that Apple imposes on dating apps
> First off, they say that in order to get out of the requirement that everyone give Apple 30% of income, they say that those using an alternative payment method still must give Apple 27% of income.

That's not exactly the trade here – Apple is letting people use alternative payment providers, which does carry a lot of benefits besides not paying the fee, including better customer management and support

firloop··on Wormhole confirms all $320M in funds have been restored
> It's just the general public got screwed by having $320M of Solana tokens inflated up on them.

The general public didn't get screwed here. Solana ETH is an IOU for ETH. Now it's backed by ETH. It's not like anyone got diluted or anything.

firloop··on Zendesk pretends to be open source?
> Zendesk is an open API ticket system which means third-party developers can build new integrations on our platform

Clever segue from "open source", to open.

firloop··on Weird Languages
Zig is one that’s been on my list for Paul's stated reason.
firloop··on OnlyFans to block sexually explicit videos starting in October
Likely, the restrictions are coming at the card network level rather than the bank level. Building a Visa/Mastercard network is a much harder proposition than just buying a bank, especially as it pertains to consumer distribution.

Is it possible they only meant self hosted Matomo, not Plausible?

firloop··on Goodbye, Fleets
Instagram copying Snapchat's Stories is the canonical example of this working, which makes sense that Twitter tried Stories as well.
firloop··on Show HN: SirenDNS – A Watchtower for Your Domains (Anti-domain-squatting)
I imagine this tool could be really useful if you want to buy a domain if it expires. I’ve set calendar reminders to check if a domain has been renewed by its owner and have successfully acquired domains that way. Have you thought of adding a pricing tier to support that use case?
firloop··on Apple's iCloud+ “VPN”
Not super familiar with 1.1.1.1, but I use NextDNS and it's no longer implemented as a VPN – they use the native iOS encrypted DNS feature. I wonder how iCloud Private Relay works with that.
firloop··on 7-11 is opening 500 EV charging stations by the end of 2022
Did a road trip in Europe in December 2020 and it turned out that McDonalds very reliably had EV charging. What you're saying is not as crazy as it sounds!
firloop··on PostgreSQL EXPLAIN Output Explained
The numbers can be useful, but I mainly pay attention to the steps the query planner takes. Is it doing an expensive loop over data? Is it using an index? Those can often be more illuminating than the numbers – you get a feel over time for what operations are actually expensive.
firloop··on PostgreSQL EXPLAIN Output Explained
Great writeup. I use EXPLAIN a lot in development as a gut check — “does this descending index do what I thought it would? how expensive is that subquery?” Highly recommend looking at it early on, it helps me catch silly mistakes well before production.

firloop··on Visa moves to allow payment settlements using cryptocurrency
No, this wouldn't let consumers pay their bills in USDC, but rather allow banks and merchants to be paid in USDC.

Settlement is the process in which an acquirer "settles" up with Visa, which happens after a transaction is authorized[0]. The acquirer sends Visa a list of transactions and monetary amounts, Visa accepts this and forwards along money for the transactions to the acquiring bank.

Visa is saying that they are now sending USDC (over the blockchain? unclear.) instead of fiat currency over traditional banking rails.

Later this year, Visa will expand these capabilities to more acquirers/merchants.

firloop··on The Curious Case of the Y Combinator Bookmarklet
"At some point these links were simply automatically marked dead whenever submitted."

Practically speaking, it sounds like the links are blacklisted.

firloop··on Google Cloud vs. AWS Onboarding Comparison
Google will suspend entire accounts even if you have more than one owner.

A few years back, our business credit card was somehow stolen and used to buy Google Adwords. We disputed the charge with our bank. A day or two later, at 4am local time, our GCP account was suspended for fraud (presumably because the same, stolen, card was attached to that account). All instances were stopped and our service was brought to a halt.

We couldn’t contact Google Cloud support because our account was suspended. We had to go through our network to get our account re-instated. Pretty awful way to start our morning, to say the least.

firloop··on A request for Pinboard old-timers
By way of the Shortcuts app, every iPhone has a pre-installed Pinboard integration. I’ve taken to just using that to make new bookmarks, because you can make shortcuts that accept URLs from the share menu as inputs.

Here’s my shortcut to add an item to my Pinboard unread list. https://www.icloud.com/shortcuts/486bc6782a60453cbdbcf9988c3...

firloop··on A request for Pinboard old-timers
As someone who does not belong to the old-timer crowd, and in fact pays an extra $25/year for an archival account, the news that Pinboard is even being maintained comes as a blessing.

In the past year things have happened like the API returning invalid JSON for weeks[0] and the search returning an error whenever I wanted to use full-text search (one of the selling points for the extra archival fee.) Not to mention the ongoing issues with page archiving in general (things frequently fail and need to be manually re-queued).

I really like Pinboard, I do, but the reliability issues have made me want to look somewhere else. My subscription is set to renew at the end of March and after seeing this I guess I'll give it another year. Here's hoping things trend upwards.

firloop··on WebKit Quirks
Wow, there's not only _domain_ specificity, but also HTML _element_ specificity in this quirks list.

    // When panning on an Amazon product image, we're either touching on the #magnifierLens element
    // or its previous sibling.
    auto& element = downcast<Element>(*target);
    if (element.getIdAttribute() == "magnifierLens")
        return true;
    if (auto* sibling = element.nextElementSibling())
        return sibling->getIdAttribute() == "magnifierLens";

firloop··on Kill the Newsletter – Convert email newsletters into Atom feeds
Newsblur does let you follow Twitter accounts; they have an API integration. Tweets from accounts you follow show up as stories in your reader.
firloop··on Kill the Newsletter – Convert email newsletters into Atom feeds
Definitely a great tool. I used to use it but now mostly use the Newsblur native version of this feature. I blogged about my specific stack for reading newsletters because it takes a surprising amount of configuration to read newsletters in a streamlined way. Once you get a Gmail filter set up for the big services like Substack it becomes pretty painless though.
