This has puzzled me for a long time too. Now I know!

The way I usually solve this is to have the bookmarklet itself check if the user is on the "install" page and let them know how to install the bookmarklet.

Aha! Thanks for the investigation. I have also been wondering about that for some time now.

I still don't understand why HN doesn't want to blacklist submissions of the bookmarklet[1]. Especially since it happens all the time.

Practically speaking, it sounds like the links are blacklisted.

Sounds like work. Running hackernews is already a lot of work. Not every good idea rises to the level of someone taking the time to actually do it right away. Updating the bookmarklet would probably be easier and superior at this point thanks to the authors work.
